When I WAS a JW, for many years, I used to stay up and watch all New Year's Eve specials. (Dick Clark's concert specials were my favorite) I didn't go to parties and I didn't go drinking. Now, I think I'm making up for that!

I live near a large city, and some people celebrate by buying a button pin for $5. On New Year's night, people that are wearing the button, can get in to all kinds of shows, outdoor street parades, art exhibits, and ice sculptures. It's pretty neat and fun for kids, as well. I am not sure if witnesses do that or not. One year, there was a JW on TV, (he's an ice carver by trade) and kept trying be in the camera. He loved being on all 3 local TV networks. My family and I look for him every year! LOL!

Thanks, Nathan! I was always wondering exactly how that term came about. I figured it must have been someone who's still in the truth. But, I thought it might have been an Australian word, or from the United Kingdom.

A surprise in my Christmas tree

we cut a christmas tree this afternoon at a u-cut lot about one hundred miles from home.

we were on our way home from my mother-in-law's house and thought we'd start a new tradition.

we had ideas of tromping through the woods with the kids looking for the perfect tree.

What a nice surprise to find in your tree. Now, all you need is a family of birds to find a way to your house. Have you thought of putting fake birds in the nest? You could buy those miniature birds in a craft store. I think they are made from dried mushrooms with feathers. Maybe your kids could choose names for them. Just a thought....

something has puzzeled me for a long time since i came to this board.

first i would like to say i'm not judging any in what i'm about to say as we all are at different places in our lives and i respect that.. here it is: at what point in your life did you no longer believe in god or believe the bible?.

how many came to this conclution after coming to this db?.

I beleive in an higher power. I think there is a powerful force that protects us if we are trying to be good. I wish God could be visible (as in something tangible) but, I guess that's not how it works. With all the nature, animals, and the marvels of the world I beleive there had to be a creator.

I am not against those who do not share my views. I think that we all need to beleive in something to carry on with our lives. There are so many different beliefs on this site, which make it interesting. I try to keep an open mind. This site only reinforced my beliefs.

Sheep and Goats

the use of sheep and goats as figurative images of good and bad people gave me pause even when i was a witness.. i've lived in the countryside, and know that sheep are quite possibly some of the most stupid mammals i've ever observed close hand.

it's not unknown for a ewe to stand at the edge of a ditch whilst giving birth, with her arse hanging over the edge, with the inevitable 'splash' after the final heave.

some highland breeds might be smarter, but not a lot.

Your topic title reminded me of this elderly sister. We would pick her up at her apartment before going out in service, and she would always say,

"Come on, let's go separate the sheep from the goats!"

Us JW kids could never watch Batman growing up in the 60's. So I would go over my friend's house across the street. I was fascinated with Eartha Kitt's voice as catwoman. PRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Way Back When You Were A Witness.......

i did and things didn't work out so well.

I wish I knew this site before my family became involved with the witnesses. The internet wasn't available in the mid-60's. And it's not like the Society to advertise this site, anyway. My "fleshly" brother told me about this website. Like larc, this can be addicting for me, as well. Now, everytime I'm on the computer, the rest of the family knows which site I'm on. Hey, I even find out stuff on here first that my JW parent doesn't know about the Society.

It's just dawned on me...

...that jw's have a hard time forgiving others because they themselves are rarely forgiven for their own sins.

according to their beliefs jehovah keeps track of every detail of your life...good and bad.

that even if you are humble and repent of your sins, that there is still no true forgiveness until the new system.

I once had an "wordly" English teacher that told our class that, "It is God's job to forgive." I didn't understand that at the time, but we all make mistakes and need to ask God to forgive us. I think the hardest part is forgiving ourselves first then we can forgive others. I always think of the Lord's Prayer, when it comes to forgiveness.
