" As a side note, why the f#ck does every other thread about science need to be derailed by this perspectivism/relativism/navelgazism trolling."
"Navelgazism"... :D Haha!
Guilty, bohm — sorry about that.

New Homo erectus Skull Shakes up Palaeontology
by cofty ina fantastic homo erectus skull has been found in georgia - no not our former colony, the one in asia.. it is one of 5 that have been found at a site in dmanisi, it's the first homo erectus to be found outside of africa and it is in excellent condition.
the fossils are dated at 1.8 million years ago and comparisions of the specimens have thrown doubt over the details of human evolution.. it is possible that species previously named as h rudolfensis , h gautengensis , h ergaster and possibly h habilis were actually all h erectus.
the natural variation withing the species may be greater than thought previously.. the "lumpers" and the "splitters" are going to have plenty to argue about for years to come.. note to creationists - please read the article carefully.

A quick look at the events are in the orance box "THE STORY OF SKULL 5."
Of course, yes — time will tell if the first impressions are correct. -

adamah, You say, "Unfortunately, what we say often reveals who we are, and our level of education."
This is true — however it also reveals our level of intelligence, which has little to do with education.
I have debated for decades, and I can easily point out those who have the education but not the logic. So although education is essential to feed our intelligence, it does not guarantee practical thinking.
Some of us are avid readers, and dig deep — conscious of our natural biases, and fighting them.
I change my opinions on better information, and I'm always open to further change if needed.
To look down on someone with less education, or who expresses themselves with simpler words (even bad grammar) and overlook the message, is proof of extreme stupidity!
Lately, I've had a long debate with a Muslim with really bad broken english. It was work to decode what he had to say. It sounded childish, but his arguements were amazing in depth. We ended up agreeing to disagree — but I have learned a lot from him. So it really grinds on my patience when I read the arrogance of those who were lucky enough to get higher education as if that was any guarantee of better understanding.
Intellegence is to express thoughts logically and clearly, seeking to be understood rather than to impress. -

Shaking my head at the sweeping generalizations on fact and truth. Indeed, much "truth" is not final (or understood) — but some truth is final.
To rationalize the contrary is mental masturbation, as philosophy often is.I would be curious to see how in practical domains of life using philosophy would work...

An honest report of the accomplishments of Jesus since 1914
by Terry innot much.. he is directing the watchtower society to print magazines that contain errors.. the goats he separated from the sheep have had to be put back in with the sheep because of policy changes.. stray sheep have been ostracized and turned into lamb stew.. the war to end all wars (wwi) has been followed by wwii, korea, viet nam, and the cold one.
(no need to mention the war on terror.).
there have been earthquakes, famine, disease and a lot of marrying and eating at fine restaurants.. 1925 came and went without any ancient worthies moving in to the residence at beth sarim.. the world got so dangerous in 1975 nobody noticed it.. the generation that saw all the signs and wonders had been dropping dead like flies.

Just smile. I would leave their spite open to public judgement. Kudos to you for telling it like it is.
Today's new light is tomorrow's apostasy. Go figure. -

Science should be welcomed with a measure of healthy skepticism... but I feel that the scientific method is still the best we have, as philosophy can rationalize anything with elitist prose that tricks us humans into feeling intelligent — often, it's empty — and quite impractical for life really...
A few pearls from Bertrand Russell:
" Science is what you know, philosophy is what you don't know."
"I think we ought always to entertain our opinions with some measure of doubt. I shouldn't wish people dogmatically to believe any philosophy, not even mine." -

slimboyfat, although I have leanings towards a measure of perspectivism in the sense that I do believe that vantage point is important as to what angle one (or a group) can see things, hence interpret them — but I am skeptical as to applying it to all cases.
I do believe in epistemological absolutes, although I will concede that absolutes can be hidden by our vantage point. This is why I'm also careful with those too.
Mostly, I don't know. At 54 I am less sure of anything as I was 10 years ago. I'm more open to adapt my understanding to things conflicting my natural bias...
When I mentioned we were on the same side, I was referring to our position on the WTS.
My advice to you was well intentioned. I myself had to clean up my prose from elitist rhetoric. I was sharing that with you sincerely.
When we enter the realm of philosophy, there is a close relation to religion in the sense that our bias can be flattered with clever wording about nothing. I question all philosophy. I am not a friend of dogmatism.
My favorite quote from Bertrand Russell is this one:
" Either the thing is true, or it isn’t. If it is true, you should believe it, and if it isn’t, you shouldn’t. And if you can’t find out whether it’s true or whether it isn’t, you should suspend judgment."Many, philosophize instead of suspending judgement. That's when my skepticism perks up!
But that's me.
I do understand better where you are coming from about "fact" — we will agree to disagree on that one.
