New Ex-JW Documentary To Be Released
by discreetslave inabout filmtruth be told is a feature length documentary that explores the lives of several individuals raised in the jehovahs witnesses religion.
the title of the film refers to the tendency by jehovahs witnesses to regard their beliefs exclusively as the truth.. the documentary is not an indictment of religion but rather a retrospective.
in a series of informal interviews, former jehovahs witnesses discuss life experiences within the organization including the impact the religion had on their childhood and family, schooling, adolescence, and approaches to dating and marriage.

Shocked at what my 3 year old just asked me
by jwfacts inme - jehovah?
who is jehovah?.
me - oh.. zac - are you happy with me dad for remembering jehovah.

hi jwfacts
tough situation and I think you are handling it wisely. I also agree with what you say about Filipino families as I have witnessed this in the congregation - they seem to raise the most wholesome JWs too! (not offence intended to others)
When small youngesters in my family talk about jehovah I visualise sun worship because to me this what Jehovah basically represents - the sun and all of its gifts and terrifying aspects. So I can honestly and sincerely enter into an unconscious emotional dialogue with them in enjoying jehovah but keeping him in his place for myself while letting them express how they interact with this all pervading presence as indeed it is. This helps to not overreact and keep the lines of communication open.
edit: excellent point nuggest - you posted while I was composing my post. You make a great point about giving children tools to resist indoctrination and this is also uppermost in my mind when i interact with my extended family which includes small youngesters. I haven't as yet worked out how to do it though.

I am an active JW and Ministerial Servant. I am also atheist. I keep up the act of pretending to be a JW because I don't want my family to shun me. Is this really what the GB wants? Secret non-believers in the congregation? They leave no other choice other than social suicide.
wow - social suicide says it all.
btw I did the survey last week. I am one of the inactive ones.

Is it important to be right?
by mankkeli insometimes, i think, our western values have drilled in us the importance of "winning" a debate on something of non-importance.. so is "winning" a debate really important?.

gotcha meangirl - I understand your position.
strangely enough we are taking a critical look at the myth of Zeus and Ganymede. This myth, as portrayed in the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite, seems to foreground beauty and honour in the relationship between them as well as love and sexual desire. But I think in todays thinking, and very rightly, such a relationship (if it was physical and not only spiritual) would be considered criminal as Ganymede is a young adolescent and Zeus a 40 year male. But this was right in the culture of the period and for a very long time after. what made it alrgiht was that 40 year old males took young adolescent boys under their wing and taught them politics, saw to their education, equipped them for warfare etc - in other words helping them become a citizen. The boy's honour was paramount and there were laws to protect them from sexual exploitation. the training was valued by the families of the boys.
I'll start another topic if anyone is interested in a discussion as i don't want to derail mankkeli's thread.

I think winning a debate is important if the debate has to do with our core values then we are concerned about what is right.
But even in debates that are not to do with core values debating to the bitter end reveals the other person's pov more fully and in time we may even come to see things as they do or at least to be able to sympathise with their perspective.

A Woman, A Woman - Oh What Can She Be?
by LoneWolf inhi, peeplezs,.
down over the years i have experienced plenty of discouragement and cynicism about faith and the existence of a god who cares for us.
if i allowed myself to dwell on those things alone, i suppose that i too would be feeling hopeless and cynical and would be just waiting until my time is up.. however, i don't feel that way at all.

You have wonderful family Tom.
What I get from your opening post is that your wife's family were probably sizing you up from quite early on and that they certainly would not have allowed her to have anything to do with you if they hadn't already checked you out and approved of you.

Is the IBSA's charitable status in the UK vulnerable?
by cedars inone thing that has occurred to me recently is how much money the society makes from being registered as a charity in certain countries.
in the uk, the government contributes 28 pence for every pound that is donated (referred to as "gift aid"), effectively increasing the value of each contribution from 1 to 1.28. not surprisingly, the society in the uk are doing very well out of this arrangement, and last year according to the charity commission's website they made a turnover of 25.7 million, with profits of 7.8 million.
i calculate that approximately 5 million of this must have been generated by gift aid.. the thing is, to my knowledge recent laws that have been passed by parliament stipulating that a charity must be in the "public benefit".

gotcha cedars - I finally understand why you were emphasizing the gift aid tax scheme on the other thread and how it relates to the charity commission and the vulnerability of IBSA's charitable status. I think you are on to something.
Perhaps the new survey could ask questions to ascertain how many children have been disfellowshipped and how this affected their family life - what things they were excluded from and how this made them feel.
