"Truth Be Told" - the movie...
by ziddina inwell, i had the rare opportunity to see this movie tonight, and i would highly recommed it for all ex-jehovah's witnesses!!!.
the documentary film basically consisted of a series of interviews with ex-jehovah's witnesses.. instead of having one interview with the first person, then proceedeing on to the next one, however, mr. smith put together footage from each interview specific to a topic - what it was like being a small child when the parents converted, what it was like being dragged to the meetings and out in "service" as a small child, what it was like missing out on christmas, birthdays and other fun holidays, what it was like going to school and feeling different or isolated, what it was like being denied - "discouraged" - from getting a college education, what it was like dating - or "non-dating" in the religion, what it was like having one's sexual behaviors controlled and censured, what it was like being disfellowshipped, and so on.... as the film's director, gregorio smith said, his "target audience" was three-fold.... ex-jehovah's witnesses, who would be most likely to identify with the people in the film.... non-jehovah's witnesses - "worldly" people - who are interested in or might be considering joining the religion.... and the group least likely to actually see the movie - active jehovah's witnesses - however, disenchanted jws and those considering an exit might be more likely to view it.. it was well done.
the movie used a somewhat non-threatening approach, as opposed to a confrontational or sensationalistic technique.. there wasn't anything actually new in the movie's information, though one comment made by a young man - gregorio's brother, i think - really hit home... regarding the practice of making small children go door-to-door proselytising, he said:.

Image of God - the Bible or Christ?
by tec inpeace to you!
i wanted to get some thoughts out there on this subject, because there are so many people who look to the bible as the image of god.
to the point that they do not look to christ at all, but rather they look to the law or to moses or to the ot as the image of god... over... christ.

I disagree qcmbr, and although there are many here who would support your view and I would go so far as to acknowledge that it would be very fruitful for believers to experience atheism, to me even if we look on the christ image as some sort of trope the important thing is that it works even for an atheist. perhaps it is as Hume said - that the brain functions by means of making associations - but even then (even if we are only using our imaginations to conjure up fanciful images) the fact that they work for many is enough to consider their importance to people leaving an unwholsome place or situation such as one founded on bible or human inerrancy.

the image of christ is powerful and works - this to me is the main thing.
I have been reading about how in ancient cultures a period of dissolution, somewhat like what we experience when we enter a period of change, (in leaving Jehovahs witnesses for example) can lead to what christians describe in their experiences of christ. I am fascinated that there is a a huge aspect of universality about these sorts of experiences that are open even to committed atheists. The best way to describe it is as coming into the light but it isn't just that - there also has to be a deep sense of being born again in the sense of being in terrifying darknesss and then clarifying light and fire which provide a new begininng. it is something you have to try for yourself and then you will understand what I mean if you want to that is.
these sorts of experiences transcend authoritative texts and are simply ways of helping people break free

A stunning conisderation of injustice: the FALL of MAN and his Salvation
by Terry inin certain instances, in society's courts of law, a false accusation takes place.
a wrong conviction happens and only a heroic effort on the part of family, friends and attorneys can save the wrongfully convicted person from penalty, imprisonment or death.. another possiblity might also occur:.
if you are wrongfully accused and convicted but saved by the very person who accused you--what then?

thanks fernando, while you were posting I was updating my post to reflect that Terry maybe describing and refuting the JW perspective and on this I agree withh him.
Tec, however, raised an interesting point that I wanted to pursue, and although this may have gone off point a little, my intention was to bring the argument round to show how wahtever conclusion we reached could impact Terry's argument
coming back to your other point above, Fernanado - the tree of like as the unabridged good news -
interesting - nice one

wow tec i have never were it put like that - that the garments god gave adam and eve were not animal skins. it is an interesting perspective and I'd like to know a little more of your reasoning.
from my own standpoint the fact that god gave adam and eve garments made of animal skins sugggests that humans and God joined forces to confront and negotiate with something unspeakable in his evolution that was part of his survival and also part of his horrofying self conscious guilt according to psycho analysis but according to a more affirmative frame this horrofying experience could be seen as an enactment of power and will to survive but even this would need to be made sense of on a communal level.
if any of this was the case then we are looking at god committing an act to enable justice for man and for his environment rather than injustice.
But Terry, going back to your opening post,I agree with you provided that you are refuting how Jehovahs witnesses define the fall of man and his salvation?

depends on your point of view I think zid. edit: My pov is that i want to move away from locating too much power within humans and rather head towards what truxjw is saying - that worship is part of a human concept whereas the idea of there being an unnameable unknown type of spirit releases us from what is we already know to move towards what we don't know

alrigth - kettle is boiling merrily - back to you zid. I think humans always have a need to blame someone or something when things go wrong etc - do you agree?

trujw, zid - I think it is the ability of the god or godess to make reparation and then give healing and comfort that makes them worthy of worship. But on the other hand if another power can do this for you then the god or godess can and does fade from one's life.
