Do you give to beggars?
by jean-luc picard ini have seldom given money to beggars.
i have often thought that many are people who just do not want to work.
however, i am starting to wonder if i ought to: and how much to give?.

Sheep and goats...
by Aussie Oz inwe all know the old sheep = followers and goats = the independant thing.
sometimes i wonder if the bible got it all wrong, but i think the writers may have got it spot on!.
having spent a couple of years working with sheep, over all, they are stupid, followers, will only eat what they are provided, scared and unfriendly.

In reality sheep are very emotionally intelligent according to some studies and so are we. Leaders prefer to work with intellignet peeps.
wasn't there an aussie study that showed that JW children were on average more creative than non jws?

I am trying to figure out my future if I should go to college or just keep working a regular job...............................
by andys ini am faced with a dilema right now and need some advice on what i should do with my future, i realize that eventually i'll grow old and will need to somehow work my way up so i have something to fall back on, like someone told me once i don't really have a support structure to fall back on, if something happened where i could not work i would probably wind up homeless, moving back in with my parents house would be out of the question because i would never go back to the borg.. this is my situation right now, everything is going good, i love my job, i am single no kids, i work at a hosptal making $10/hour doing janitorial work, also my rent is very cheap about $350 a month for rent on a duplex, i live less then a mile from work, right now i have the most ideal situation to save alot of money even on $10/hr job, but also i realize that everything can go all at once, if i ever lost my job since i don't have no support structure and could not find work i would be sol.. now to some of the things i like doing, i like to drive, one of the things i have always wanted to do is learn truck driving, since i don't have no extra responsibilites, i am still having a hard time though making a decision, on one hand i like my current job, but on the other hand i realize that i do have to plan for the future, if anyone can give me some advice i am at a loss of what to do, also because of the way the econommy is here in the us right now sometimes i think its best to stick with the job that i have but still don't know whats best..

At the age of 48 I just graduated with my BA degree from college and I am on top of the world
by booker-t ini thought i would never get my college degree from a university in this century at the age of 48 but i did it and graduated with an "a-" average.
i did this all the while working a full time job and going to school full time.
it can be done and now i love school to death.

congratulations
visiting discussion forums, although interesting, takes up valuable time. I'd like to start something completely new and different when school begins in October.
this is good advice
I stopped going to ex-jw's functions about a year ago and I don't miss them at all. All they did was talk about the big bad WT society. At first you need to be around fellow understanding people that went through it but after awhile people start getting tired of hearing the same old song. And I noticed that at those ex-jw's functions the ex witnesses were still so angry after years of being out and I told myself I will not let myself become bitter it is like a slow death. Be happy and have fun.

Watchtower defiance against Hitler
by The Quiet One inwatchtower october 1, 2011 page 14 'did hitler receive letters of protest from church officials concerning the outrager perpetrated by the national socialists, or nazis?
there were some, but such letters were few and far between.
in the moscow archives, however, eberle found a file containing a number of letters sent to hitler by jehovah's witnesses..protesting against the conduct of the nazis.

on rutherford, I think we will have to agree to disagree as to me the letter suggests strong negotiation - similar negotiation was used by other religious and secular bodies who were facing proscription. I think Rutherford probably borrowed heavily from others when he worded his letter.

in reply to your post 218 - I am not disagreeing that Hitler may have had a master plan to exterminate the Jews from the start. What I am disagreeing with is the thinking that people who could have somehow have stopped him were aware at the begininng that he would go to that extent.
Hitler was aware of the backlash against him after mein Kampf was published and he actively hid his darkest intentions.
I have not read mein kampf but am familiar with the arguments you mention and to delve into those arguments one would have to trace the history of the German attitude to Jews from at least the first world war, the depression that came after and even further back perhaps to ideas about eugenics and scientific racism. Negative stereoptyping of Jews go even further back than that. Some say that anti-semitism went much further back then the 19th century but I don't agree as I make a distinction between negative stereotyping, religious hatred and intolerance which happened a lot to the Jews and the much stronger anti-semitism which started from the 19th century getting steadily worse. (edit - I could write an essay about this - lol)
But are you saying that the sentence Terry quoted is in mein kampf. Even if it is please see my point in para 1 of this post. (edited - Somehow I don't think it is because gas chambers came later).
One thing I have learned from my time outside of JWs and that is to avoid monolithic explanations.

Hitler was very antisemitic - this was my point. I don't think Rutherford's letter is anti-semitic. Here is a link that explains Jehovahs witnesses dilemma under Hitler and all the negotiating they had to do.
