hello all... i came across this line of questioning many months on the inet so i decided that i would submit just this once to peer pressure and make a usefull contribution to the board.. here is the question... is jesus just "a god?".
many of the regular inet surfers would have come across this line of questioning before so if you have you could just sit back and relax and read the replys.. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>.
me: so is he a 'lesser true god' or a 'lesser false god?'.
alan, small correction i think:
In the passage you discuss, "In the beginning WAS the Word", the Greek word for "was" is more properly translated "had been", since it's in the imperfect tense. So it more properly reads, "In the beginning the Word had been", which supports your argument even better.had been = perfect past tense
Jo1:1c uses the imperfect tense, 'was' is the appropriate english word.

hey, another very important thing with multiplication that alan didnt really mention is that you are not multiplying numbers here, you are multiplying people (or gods). now even if we assume the normal mathematical definition of multiplication applies, we have the problem of units.
e.g. you can multiply things like speed and time to get distance, but simply saying a speed of 3 and time of 5 makes a distance of 15 is meaningless without units. e.g:
3mph x 5hr
= 3x5 x mph x hr
= 15 x miles x hr / hr
= 15 miles
you can only get a meaningful answer if your units can be multiplied. so ill give you that 1x1x1=1. but shouldnt the equation be:
1 god x 1 god x 1 god
= 1x1x1 x god x god x god
= 1 god cubed
whats a god cubed?
why dont you just do what everyone else does? call it a mystery that we can never understand with our puny human minds and you will believe it no matter what anyone says ever ever ever. because in your heart you just know it to be true. i would be satisfied with that answer.

well today was the day of yet another special talk.
you know the ones where everyone in the world is supposed to get the same one.. anyway, i noticed very little special about this talk which was about keeping jehovahs fearsome day close at hand or something like that.. it was the standard doom and gloom but arent we lucky we have a hope kind of talk and was nothing new except for one thing.
there was no mention about the generation passing away.
some classic comments from the WT:
'some flowers even grow towards the light, so it shows that even inanimate objects like the light.'
conductor: 'so there is light and darkness. is there any other third choice?' looking for the answer 'no' of course.
conductor: 'we need to avoid satan's traps, including the internet.'

ok. just read the thread on the "special talk" today and how they mentioned apostates.. well, that explains why i had such a painful conversation today with my sister-in-law.
she called to let me know that she and her mother had reached a painful decision today....to abide by the shunning rule.
up until today, we had a great relationship....everything was fine.
the apostate discussion wasnt in the special talk, it was in the WT study. it wasnt a big thing, just one mention in one paragraph. something like, 'satan's minister's, including apostates, keep transforming themselves into ministers of light. so if we pay attention to their false reasoning, it could shipwreck our faith in gods word.' however, since the WT study article was SOOOO boring, just about any point that could be elaborated was. so in our hall, there was some discussion about apostates and the internet. id guess most halls had a few comments on this point.

ill prolly post a quick summary of the special talk tomorrow. the WT study was about the most bland study i can recall. i think i could pretty much some it up as:
light light light good light jehovah light jesus light bible light light appreciate light light not darkness darkness bad darkness satan darkness deceptive darkness apostate darkness bad no darkness no no no darkness light light light.

there is a rather fascinating article at the end of the april 22nd awake concerning a certain spider that is able to imitate an ant so convincingly that it can live among ants and escape detection.
(puzzlingly the article fails to either name the spider or indicate its native habitat.
looking up some info myself, i see that there a several species of ant-mimicing spider, especially of the genus myrmarachne.
What about the male praying mantis, which has it's head chewed off by the female while it's procreating!
the really fascinating part is that the male's decapitation usually doesn't affect his performance. now that's determination!

heathen: regarding animal suffering, perhaps i should simply quote the dawkins paragraph i had in mind. from River Out of Eden:
It is better for the genes of Darwin's wasp that the caterpillar should be alive, and therefore fresh, when it is eaten, no matter what the cost in suffering. Genes don't care about suffering, because they don't care about anything.moxIf Nature were kind, She would at least make the minor concession of anesthesizing caterpillars before they were eaten alive from within. But Nature is neither kind nor unkind. She is neither against suffering nor for it. Nature is not interested in suffering one way or the other unless it affects the survival of DNA. It is easy to imagine a gene that, say, tranquilizes gazelles when they are about to suffer a killing bite. Would such a gene be favored by natural selection?
Not unless the act of tranquilizing a gazelle improved that gene's chances of being propagated into future generations. It is hard to see why this should be so, and we may therefore guess that gazelles suffer horrible pain and fear when they are pursued to the death--as many of them eventually are. The total amount of suffering per year in the natural world is beyond all decent contemplation. During the minute that it takes me to compose this sentence, thousands of animals are being eaten alive, many others are running for their lives, whimpering with fear, others are being slowly devoured from within by rasping parasites, thousands of all kinds are dying of starvation, thirst and disease. It must be so. If there is ever a time of plenty, this very fact will automatically lead to an increase in population until the natural state of starvation and misery is restored.

DNA neither cares nor knows. DNA just is. And we dance to its music.
here are some usa statisatical numbers that will prove interesting.. 1. http://www.prevent-abuse-now.com/stats.htm.
2. http://www.maspal.org/.
3. http://www.crimelibrary.com/serial/pedophiles/.
i think this discussion is getting at the heart of the matter, as i see it. if child abuse is handled poorly in the JW community, (which it apparently is) it is less directly a result of some WT policy or lack thereof as it is a result of JW culture as a whole. when you have a mindset that says that everything inside the group is from god and everything outside the group is from satan, it is inevitable that members of the group will believe that any problems can and should be handled internally. i believe this is more or less what ray franz said on the subject last year when it was initially raised. it doesnt matter what direction is or isnt given to elders or rank-and-file members--they will continue to treat the problem as something to best be handled internally. (pretty much the same way everyone else approached child abuse up until about 20 years ago.) this is a product of a culture that cannot be altered by any means short of dismantling the very fabric of the community, a community that is protected by the charter of human rights. in short, this is the impasse i see any debate of this topic coming to.

not trying to start a discussion about extra-terrestrial life, but i assume that most feel it to be a rather strong possibility whether your belief is in creation, evolution or both.. i agree that discovery of intelligent life outside this world doesn't prove creation.
suppose however that such life were discovered and that it was of the homo-saphien variety?
what would be the odds of this happening through pure evolution?
somewhat related to the topic:

An analysis of data obtained by the Pathfinder mission to the Red Planet in 1997 suggests there could be chlorophyll - the molecule used by plants and other organisms on Earth to extract energy from sunlight - in the soil close to the landing site.
