  watching the jw in service sat, i noticed how heavy their bookbags, or minisrty bags were, even the ones some children were carrying.

  i said to myself how many books are needed for the simple mess.

  Hi Moxy. so things have changed that much, no bags allowed in buildings, why if you can answer me. Why did it change after all these yrs? I have a KH on well a block or two away, and still see them
  with book bags, maybe its up to the individual to want change.

  oh jeez nojw, this isnt like a doctrinal change or even a conscience matter, its just one of those trends. regarding buildings, maybe 'allowed' was too strong a word, i just meant that in urban territories ive noticed a lot of folks avoiding the bag when going into buildings. by buildings i mean apt territory where we usually have to 'sneak in', find a RV that lets us in or follow someone in the door. an obvious no-no in some buildings, depends on how lax the building is, u know, use your judgement. holding a book bag just makes it a lot harder. i dont know if this trend is nation-wide.

  actually i thought the trend was going towards smaller, less obtrusive cases. a lot now use attache cases, or portfolio sized bags that can be held under the arm. with the pocket bible and a jacket, u can actually be fully equipped without a bag at all. in buildings, thats the norm. no bags allowed. and even on the street, i think we are trying to look less obvious.

  Governing Body Exit Doors

  consider the exit doors for the governing body.. we know that there was no authoritative governing body before 1976, so i will limit the scope of this thought to the time since then.

  how do members leave the governing body?.

  exit door number one: death; taken by most.. exit door number two: disgrace; taken by a couple.. exit door number three: triumph; taken by raymond franz.. has it ever been the case where a governing body member has left because of senility?

  i had always assumed that they are simply shielded from making too many real decisions when they become mentally shaky. still, a vote is a vote. if decisions really come down to a 2/3 majority vote then all hold the same power regardless of age. im sure things arent as simple as that in practice tho.

  towards the end, it would always be said of fred franz that, tho blind, he had memorized practically the entire bible and didnt need his eysight. he was still sharp as a tack, and of course, fluent in hebrew in greek.

  i personally think the first poster was possibly a bit harsh, but then at the same time, maybe the witness she mentions should have asked for the home owner before going into her presentation.. .

  yes there was a tract campaign last year. there have been 3 (?) recently. they are designed just as that, a throw-back to the early days of an urgent message that must be delivered as quickly as possible to everyone in the territory. in reality, it comes off as much less than that. in city territories, it is impossible to do so. for one, the allotment is based on publishers, 50 per and 250 (?) for pioneers. well that nowhere near covers the number of households in an urban territory like ours. and an ever greater number of households are unreachable by door-to-door. on top of that, the pioneers unwisely use them in street service and being as there is basically no presentation, street service allows you to very quickly dispose a large number of tracts, literally! altogether i figured we distributed to about 25-35% of all households, a fraction of which were given more than a glance im sure. so the excitement that they hope to generate falls a bit flat when you see how little impact it has.

  can someone please tell me exactly what constitutes a df'ing offence?.

  i recently read a post where someone said that they were df'd for committing "adultery in the heart", someone else for gambling, someone else for smoking etc etc.

  it's all very puzzling, back in the 60's the wtbts had a down on "petting and necking" but it wasn't df'able.

  the may 15 2000 watchtower page 4 indicated that scholars at the jesus seminar had concluded that 82% of all the words attributed to jesus in the gospels were not authentic but 'derived from later tradition'.. it is difficult to say for yourself but i do find it remarkable that pauls letters do not contain any references to jesus' life, history or more importantly his teachings.

  the sermon the mount, lords prayer or the golden rule etc.

  do not get a mention in his words to fledgling congregations.

  is there any point trying to figure out who was where to hear what? there were lots of occasions when clearly no one was around to hear anything (Jesus prayer while disciples slept) - you have to accept that there was supernatural transmission of information or else just forget it.

  as of january 1, 2001, canada has new privacy legislation (bill c-6).. similar legislation has been adopted in the u.s., although i am not.

  familiar with it.

  Perhaps you have not heard much about the situation in Blainville, Quebec. but this case is apparently an important one in which precedent could be set in Canada. just check a search engine for lots of news stories on the canvassing bylaw in blainville that is being challenged. this started over 2 years ago iirc and the branch has focused a great deal of legal manpower on blainville. they are telling us that a precedent, if unfavorably set, will cause a ripple effect thru-out quebec and possibly canada. one CO told us that municipal gvmts from all over the country had inquired into the blainville situation to check the progress for just this reason. so i think it unlikely that anything major will happen until this is resolved. anyone have more up-to-date information on this?

  this one scripture has bothered me for a while.

  i've asked elders everywhere on this one and just get confused looks.... according to a wt in 1953, the nwt rendering of 1:1 at the time was: "paul, an apostle of christ jesus thru god's will, to the holy ones who are also faithful ones in union with christ jesus.".

  wouldn't the correct rendering be: "paul, an apostle of christ jesus thru god's will, to the holy ones who are [in ephesus] who are also faithful ones in union with christ jesus."???

  i found some interesting statistics, some of which you may know, that indicate that the wtbts is in decline.. 1. in the twenty years from 1970 to 1990, the rate of yearly increase dropped from 10% to 6%.

  in the last 10 years it has dropped from 6% to about 2%.

  since the world population growth is about 1.5% they are only growing at about 1/2 of 1% faster than the population.. 2. in 1999, there were 21 large countries that showed a decline.

  thx larc, i was wondering if anyone read this thread anymore... i spent a lot of time on those stats :)

  i will grab the 50-69 data too and add it. i wouldve except that the stats seemed quite different from 68 and earlier. they had one stat 'no of meetings', presumably they counted every meeting. but bizarrely, baptisms was absent. anybody have any idea why?
