Also, if you go to an outside place to eat, you may not return in time to 'receive complete refreshment at Jehovah's banquet table'.

So, Whats the real reason JWs are no concessions open at the DC and are discouraged from supporting nearby vendors?
by BU2B inso ever since they discontinues the food service at the assemblies and dcs, jws have been "lovingly encouraged" to pack a light lunch to eat.
the secretary at the hall that i am held hostage in said during the service meeting that even a sub would be too heavy to eat, and that a light salad was the best option.
what do you fine people think is the real reason why, in the absence of food service, jws are told to not leave the building at lunch?

John the BAPTISER vs John the BAPTIST - which do you prefer?
by PaintedToeNail ini have always wondered why, as jw's, we would always say jt baptiser instead of jt baptist like everyone else.
it bugged me, so i refused to say it.
does anyone know why the wtbts uses the 'baptiser' moniker instead of the norm?.

Rattigan-With that logic, my dentist isn't one, he is a dentaler, my machinist relative is a machiner and so on. The Baptist religion came long after John lived and died.

Should all elders be painted with the same brush?
by Socrateswannabe inan hour or two ago, i was reading a topic on this forum that welcomed new elders to jwn.
there was some criticism aimed at the op and i understand that elders shouldn't be singled out as special.
one poster said he/she hates all elders.

Socrates-I forgot to mention, the Harnadek book helps you identify propaganda techniques, common errors in reasoning, logic, critical thinking, and how to be open minded. So many of the things that the WTBTS doesn't want you to understand are in this book.

Socrates-For the littler kids I used 'Blast of with Logic' series, they have three workbooks designed for grades 3-4 (Logic Coundown), grades 4-6 (Logic Liftoff), and grades 5-7 (Orbiting with Logic).
The book "Critical Thinking", by Anita Harnadek, is the one I use with my oldest teenager, it requires that you (or your wife) do it with the child. Harnadek uses real life situations, articles from newspapers and so on, for evaluation. This book had a lot of discussions with the child in it and is a very enjoyable book.

Unconfused-It sounds like you might like the "South Beach Diet", it is a cardiologist developed diet that is very well balanced. You could check the book out at the library. There are really great recipes in the book. Have you ever logged onto SparkPeople? They are a site where people encourage each other in weight loss and exercise. They have very encouraging real life stories submitted by users, as well as 'before and after' pictures.

Socrates-Have you thought about doing independent Critical Thinking skills with your kids? I got some books on Amazon on the subject. My kids LOVE doing them. For younger kids, there are a lot of compare and contrast things, why things are similar and so on. They ones for older kids really make you think and understand and recognize different kinds of statements and situations, i.e., sweeping generalization statements. My teenage son likes to do these more difficult ones, but my middle pre-teen races into the room whenever we do them, because she finds them fascinating. They are able to listen to commercials on TV and radio and see how ridiculous the claims being made are and often they comment on them. It has carried over to what they are hearing at the Hall, they come home and tell me about the incongrueties in the message.
You could tell your wife that you just want to make sure that your kids are aware of crazy advertising claims, and statements made on the internet, so they won't be fooled and will become better consumers. Your wife could even help you to educate your kids to become better consumers. She will learn a lot.

Quendi-We used to hold our baptisms at the YMCA, and we know how a JW isn't supposed to be a member there. The borg made the excuse they were just renting the pool, not endorsing the Y itself...then came the UN NGO thing, so it is basically 'do what I say, not what I do.

It is a gorgeous, sunny Sunday
by PaintedToeNail ini'm so glad i have been able to be puttering around my yard, planting flowers, pulling weeds, drinking coffee while on the porch, instead of being locked in a stuffy kingdom hall, being bored to death, watching the clock and hoping nobody was going to be long-winded on the comments at the watchtower and we would end up overtime.
.
isn't it great to be able to have a leisurely sunday morning?.

in todays watchtower, the society used the first chapter of nahum to explain why a father who lost his job would put his trust in jehovah by going out in service midweek.
-
PaintedToeNail
Why bring in Nahum? IMHO it is because people are getting desensitized to the usual guilt inducing scriptures, so the WTBTS needs to think up a crazy story and apply obscure scriptures to try to get around the problem.
It would be unthinkable that the father try to look for gainful employment during the week when most businesses are open, yes trust in Jehovah and all your bills will be paid, money will rain down from heaven and solve all your problems as long as you go out in service during the middle of the week when every householder is not home, because they are gainfully employed.
