JW's Thoughts on Medical Cannabis

i've wondered this for sometime.

to all of the jws on the forum, what is your opinion on medical cannabis?

i support it for a couple of reasons.. 1. i've battled clinical depression since age 9. after my anti-depressants stopped working when i was 21, i heard about cannabis' positive effects on depression through the internet and a couple of documentaries so i tried it.

When a family member was sick and undergoing chemo earlier this year, and thus had no appetite, my wife (still strongly in JW land) commented that we should see if the family member would be up for me obtaining some for her (I know a few people, who know a few people....) despite the fact that it is illegal where I live.

I was really surprised to hear that come out of my wife's mouth. Funny how "God's Law" on smoking and drugs are okay to break when someone's life is in danger, but giving the person blood... no way.

so, i was reading through this weeks watchtower study, since i was curious from another thread talking about it an apostasty.

What age should you get baptized?

as from today i am disfellowshipped.

my parents cant talk to me and alot of issues have arisen which i have mentioned in my other posts.

i got baptized at 14 and i think it is way to young to make such a decision which will affect your whole life.

If you aren't old enough to enter a marriage with another person, how can you possibly be old enough to make another life commitment?

As the WTS likes to phase it "Beyond the Bloom of Youth". I know I will be facing the same issue with my oldest son, as he is getting pressure from my wife and brothers in the hall, but I am going to put my foot down on it. I am sure it will be the first real fight my wife and I have over my long gradual fade.

JWs relieved when judges decree their kids must have a blood transfusion

danny haszard tweeted the following story from the flordia sun-sentinel: state butts in to give kids a life.

it's a fascinating story that shows the real attitude of many parents of young children who become seriously ill. though ordered by their religion to refuse transfusions and simply accept that their child may die as a result, some parents willingly accept the right of the state to decree that a transfusion must take place if doctors so decide.. no parent wants their child to die, and it would simply tear them apart to know that a reasonably simple and routine medical practice could save their life ... yet they would be shunned by their family and friends if they accepted.

the solution is to hope like hell the state steps in, allowing them to say to their congregation, "well, what can you do?

It is a simple matter of applying these scriptures:

Hosea 6:6 - For in loving-kindness I have taken delight, and not in sacrifice; and in the knowledge of God rather than in whole burnt offerings.

Matthew 9:13 - Go, then, and learn what this means, ‘I want mercy, and not sacrifice.’

(Interestingly, the "I want mercy, and not sacrifice" is quoted from Hosea 6:6 which you can see how the WTS has mis-translated above)

Matthew 12:11-12 - He said to them: “Who will be the man among YOU that has one sheep and, if this falls into a pit on the sabbath, will not get hold of it and lift it out? 12 All considered, of how much more worth is a man than a sheep! So it is lawful to do a fine thing on the sabbath.”

(Laws can be broken when a human life is at stake)

1 Samuel 21:1-6 - David Eating the Shewbread. He was not allowed to under the law, but was given permission because he was starving (an act of mercy).

Luke 6:1-4 - Jesus reiterating the 1 Samuel 21:1-6 story, showing it was okay because they were hungry. Again, Mercy, not sacrifice.

DaCheech, do what works best for you.

For those with kids, I am battling the same thing myself. I try to keep them away on the weekends from the KH and from field service as I am able to. I know that my oldest will soon start getting pressure from my wife and others in the hall to be baptised. That will be the first time I have to put my foot down and refuse to allow it, I am sure of that. I am going to use the same reasoning they use that young people should not be married. After all, if you aren't responsible enough to be married, how can you be responsible enough to dedicate yourself eternally to a higher power? Then I will use Jesus himself as an example, that he waited until he was 30 to be baptised and start his preaching. If we are to emulate Christ, how could we consider anything else.

Stupid suggestion from Study Conductor

hi everyone, first i just want to say if it wasn't this forum, i'd be baptized!

i haven't managed to successfully end my studies with a zealous jw.

she uses everything against me to brainwash me into believing i need the org.

I have to agree with many of the comments here. Why are you continuing to study with this person if you realize that the information she is providing you is false?

If you cannot handle confrontation, I know many who cannot, simply send her a letter asking her to no longer visit. State in it that you no longer wish to have any association with her.

If you dont mind confrontation, get a copy of Crisis Of Conscience and tell her that you will study with her, if she will study with you. I promise she will be running full speed towards the door.

i am in a spiritual void at the moment after a year out of the borg and 50 years in.. i'd like to hear 'brief' evidence for the existance or non existance of god/s without an argument between members here.. i'd like to get fresh view points as mine is now so critical it's telling me to be an agnostic or atheist.

why?

i am in want of evidence, not just words from a copy/paste troll & no links.. i just want to open up to new possibilities but with evidence to support it not just 'faith'..

Logically: If you saw a person drowning, and could save their life with zero danger to yourself, you would do so correct?

If you, a normal human, would do so, why would an all powerful, omnipotent, omnipresent, and omnicient god allow a young child to suffer and die?

If such a god exists, it is a cruel, spiteful creature and would not deserve worship.

we all know that the wts has many times in the past changed their current stance on "scriptural" issues, changing the rules as they were.

but what would be the effect if something major, but not completely counter, to their teachings were to change?

for instance, the blood issue would send many straight to the doors since someone would scream about blood guilt (and anyone with sense would see it).

Not a rumor at all. Just a theoretical question.

I am more curious what people think would happen. I agree though that removing stigma would be a step to keeping some of the younger ones, and the older ones would likely just roll over and take it because "Where else is there to go?"

But what if it were something simple like Birthdays?

They could easily switch their stance on Birthdays without causing a major stir, as there is nothing pagan about it, and might even be able to reason it from scripture. How quickly would the first Birthday party invitations go out?
