Hi Randy, I was in your area last week for a quick business trip. As we were leaving LAX, I saw the sign to Manhattan Beach and waved. It was so last minute, my going on the trip, that I didn't think about who I might call while I was there. Mulan/Marilyn

Should I Respect Mums Wishes?
by Englishman inmy jw mum has chosen not to write a will.
as she has very little in the way of worldly goods, she has asked my brother and i to sell her possesions when the time comes, and give the money to "the congregation".
presumably the jw`s will decide suddenly that it`s now ok to talk to us df'd ones.. also, my mum has asked me to pack up all her 100's of wt books for presentation to the local congregation library.. now, i have to tell you that these books include the original watchtower and awake volumes.

This kind of thing happens all the time in congregations, and that congregation may not appreciate having all those volumes to deal with, and may indeed just burn them. They probably already have them. I know the one we went to, had all of them all the way back, having been bequeathed to them many times over. My husband and other elders were all given large boxes of books after one elderly person died.
As to the money, why should they have it? In the US, there are rights of survivorship laws, even with a will. One family, that I knew quite well, the father died young, leaving the wife with 4 kids. All but one of the kids went very wild, one even did time in jail. When the mother died, pretty young too (40ish)she left her entire estate to the Borg. The kids contested the will, because it was considerable, with their father's life insurance and hers too, and they won. That was cool. Of course, at the time, I thought the organization was being cheated and the kids would just squander it anyway. Never heard if they did or not.
So, you have to weigh things I think.
I know for us, when my mother dies, I am not going to any services at a KH. We will have our own, for the family and whoever else wants to come. The congregation can do what they want to do, but we will do the same. She won't be there to complain, finally!! She has no will so we can do what we are comfortable with. And we will. -

Elders' Gems of Wisdom
by stephenw20 inmy dad asked the co about this one.
mat 27:52-53. and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, .
and came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

My husband remembered a few too.
While my husband was the school overseer, one elder was giving a talk on properly prounouncing words. He said, instead of pro-nun-ciation, he said pro-noun-ciation. That was hard for him to listen to, as he knew he had to counsel him on it, as during the talk he pronounced the key word in the talk no less than 50 times. Remember the subject of the talk was correct pronunciation.
My husband's father, who was known for brutalizing the English language in pronunciation, gave a talk on the 4 Greek words for Love. That was really funny.........I still remember how he said those words.
Later, another brother was the School Overseer, and gave a talk on using the Kingdom Hall library, and pronounced it over and over and over as LI-BERRY. My husband still cringes when he thinks of that talk. It was really uncomfortable.
Of course we all remember the words in the WT study, HYPERBOLE, pronounced HYPER-BOLE, instead of HI-PER-BO-LEE. It seems like there are more of those, buy I can't remember more. Maybe others will.

I remember a few. One brother giving the prayer asked Jehovah to forgive us our "falling shorts". Obviously meant our "shortcomings" or "where we fall short" and somehow combined the two ideas.
Another elderly brother, when I was about 14, was giving a talk on immorality, and got very descriptive about fornication, calling it "that very thing" over and over. At one point, he said, "all you could see was butts and elbows as they did that very thing." From that day on, every time he used that expression, "that very thing", which he used for all sorts of things, all any of my friends and I could think of, was the butts and elbows story. We were breaking up the back row, let me tell you.
My husband was the stage overseer at Circuit assemblies, and I had the #3 talk on it this one time, so we were back stage waiting to go on. One of the older elders (about 70 and just a hard nosed man, but sweet) from our KH had the instruction talk on Babylon the Great. He was making a comparison of the way we remember things by what they are known for. So, he says "Babe Ruth is known for hitting home runs, Paris is known for the Leaning Tower of Eiffel". In the back, we were laughing so hard (about six of us) that someone had to come quiet us. One brother actually was on the floor holding his stomach, and laughing convulsively almost.
Another time, the same Leaning Tower of Eiffel brother, giving a talk at the KH, talking about the Alpha and the Omega, said "the Alpha and the Amigo." Also mundane was "mondoon". He was priceless.
Once as he was teaching a young fellow how to drive, this same elder ran over a cat and killed it. The boy says, "Ray you just ran over the neighbor's cat." His response "plenty more where that came from."
There are probably more. Stay tuned.

In the early 90's our District Overseer, who was a self-proclaimed "company man", counseled our Circuit Assembly audience about how we spend our vacations. He talked about families spending hundreds of dollars (more like thousands) going to Disneyland or Disney World, but never going to tour Bethel. Then he boomed out "Don't go to the MOUSE; go to the HOUSE". After that, we heard that visits to Bethel increased dramatically. I know our family went later that year. (Disney World was a lot better) Yikes, he was an awful man. I am beginning to get more memories of this jerk, and his "encouraging" counsel to me, after my student talk on the Circuit Assembly that year. I was embarrassed and had to sit there smiling. I told him afterwards that I didn't appreciate it too, and he just grinned at me, like he had really pulled one off, and said "I knew you could take it". (he was wrong) It turns out he was sort of kidding me, because I DIDN'T need that particular point of counsel. But 850 other people didn't know that. Our circuit overseer, and another CO visiting, told me they didn't agree with the counsel. The damage was done, and I continued to think he was a jerk until he was reassigned finally. Good riddance.

Demons & Possession--New Teaching?
by patio34 inwhilst reading the bible straight thru this last time (& probably is the last time) i noticed an odd thing.
i'll just throw it out on the table and see what it brings.. starting in the gospels, demons and demon-possession seem to be very common and no one seems shocked.
in fact, casting out demons is a definite part of the disciples'and jesus' work.. but, in the ot, there is nary a mention of demon possession, nor rarely a word about demons at all.

My husband says that he and his Bible reading group, have discussed this subject and they all feel it is because of the presence of Jesus. They knew who he was, why he was there, and what was at stake. But it is just an opinion. Maybe not important.

Kingdom Hall thinning out?
by OrangeBlossom ini was thinking about the post about japan closing about 300 congregations in the past 3 years.
i know that the hall i occasionally go to is usually less than half full compared to a few years ago.
my mom says that the elders in her hall are trying to come up with ways to get more to attend as attendance is really bad.

A friend of mine, in a congregation North of Seattle, tells me about attendance after each meeting. It is a congregation with at least 100 publisher cards. Attendance is consistently less than 50 and once was 32. As another poster said, it is the fault of the congregation, and their attitude. The meetings, of course, have "rich spiritual food."
