Thank you, You Know. Very well put. I meant to say that too, about the long history of what the established medical field calls "alternative medicine". Not too long ago, it was the traditional medicine and the other was alternative. I have traveled throughout Southeast Asia, and in Malaysia, for instance, herbs and acupuncture, and homeopathy, are what they call TRADITIONAL MEDICINE.
They are a developing nation, to be sure, but in that field, they are right on, in my opinion. It's hard to argue with the success when you know about it. When it's rumor, you can choose not to believe it. Unfortunately, some of the wacko things out there, give the whole thing a bad name.

JW's & alternative medicine
by slipnslidemaster inin one of the threads i read today, they were talking about looking into your eyeballs to diagnose cancer and the like.
also selling herbs.. my comment and question is this: it seemed like in my congregation and the surrounding ones, alot of the sisters were into kineseology, reflexology, herbs, vitamins, color therapy, aroma therapy, etc.. alot of touchy feely hippie crap.
while i personally agree that there needs to be more synergy with eastern and western medicines, it would appear reading the boards that alot of witnesses are into this sort of stuff.. is this your experience?

Good grief you guys are so narrow minded.
Here is my take on why JW's are so prone to get involved in this kind of thing: Many of these kinds of programs are marketed through network marketing, which is exactly how the witnesses market their religion, so it's familiar to us. We know how to do it, and we have success at it. BUT!! Don't knock something you have no knowledge of and no experience with, just because it sounds weird to you.
Remember we all bought into the JW's for a long time, and wouldn't listen to anything against it. Don't fall into the same trap about traditional medicine vs. alternative methods. And don't say that these people are uneducated. It simply isn't true with many of them.I have a lifetime of experience with alternative methods, and I have to agree that some of them are scams, but definitely not all of them are. Many of them work because they attack the cause of illness and not just the symptoms. Would you rather kill the rats, or get rid of the garbage that attracts the rats? Medicine only kills the rats. The reason they are there, is still there, so more rats come back. As to cancer and other serious illnesses, I believe there is room for both, and so do many MD's and other medical practitioners these days.
Just be careful what you say because you may be letting your ignorance show. And I mean that in a very nice way, everyone. I don't mean that to be an insult to anyone.
I have an education in this field, as an herbalist, and I recognize the limitations, believe me. When I have an ear infection, I might try some Tea Tree Oil and garlic oil, for the first day or two, but if the pain is bad, believe me I will race to the doctor for a prescription. My father went to school more years than an MD does, and had to pass the exact same State board exams that an MD has to take, to be licensed, and he had an enormous practice in Naturopathic medicine long before it was mainstream. Okay?

First the update on Sharon: Good news and bad news. Good news is one of her sons has "seen the light" and is out of the Borg, but not df'd. His wife still is in. Sharon also has a new grandson, born in April. They live clear across the country though. Bad news is her cancer is very advanced, and metasticized throughout her body. At this point, the doctor is saying it is under control, but no remission. It is also in her brain, which is very difficult to treat because of the blood brain barrier.
Now, as to alternative medicine, iridology and herbs, I am a true believer in those things, for some illnesses, not all illnesses though. My father is a retired Naturopathic physician, so I grew up with that philosophy, and have seen it work. But, for cancer, and especially this kind that Sharon has, no herb or incantation (joke) will work. If she had caught it earlier, she could have had surgery and radiation and probably been cured, but she let it go way too long, and it got out of control. If I break my leg, take me to a hospital and give me drugs.........keep the White Willow Bark for a minor headache, thank you!!

I am going away for three days, tomorrow, so someone organize this, okay? Pick a secure date!! Pioneer square is yukky, and impossible parking! Seattle center is okay, but bad parking too, and terrible traffic. How about a Starbucks somewhere, or a park in the suburbs? Green Lake is great, just North of Seattle! If the weather is nice, there are lots of places we could talk there, and a Starbucks across the street, and a Seattle's Best Coffee too. By the way, I am going to an ex JW meeting in Eastern Washington for the weekend. Never done this before, and am a little nervous. My husband isn't interested so I am driving over with my cousin and her husband. It started yesterday but we can't go until tomorrow.

Since I have begun to post here more often, I thought some of the new ones here, might enjoy reading my story. I wrote this, and it is on one of Randy's boards. It is mainly about my cousin, who asked me to write it for her, but it is also my story. Much has happened in the two years since I wrote it, so I will update later, and let you know more about her cancer, and her sons. You will also find out my real name in the story.

I would advise you to not argue with that. There is some merit in what is said there. But if it were your child? Or your mate? Careless use of blood is one thing, but to save an accident victim or if there is a problem during a surgery, that is a different issue. I find, but often don't practice this, that agreeing with them, now, is the best way to get them to listen to you on important issues, in the future. Always try to find something to agree with them about. This is one of those things. There is a bloodless surgery clinic in the Seattle area, where I live, and it is staffed by JW nurses, as well as doctors, who are not JW's. It gets lots of publicity, and the medical community is coming around to this viewpoint. But, for an emergency, blood is the only thing that will save them. Even that fails at times. But, they would surely die without it. Been there, see that. Lost a precious sister in law and nephew at childbirth on this issue.

A Jehovah's Witness; two people in one skin...
by Abaddon inthe excellent threads started by amazing and jt sum up different aspects of a way of looking at my family i only recently realised that i had developed.. to give background, i walked away in '93 but have retained fairly good relations with my family although i have never had a 'show-down' regarding beliefs, just a few half-hearted fire-fights.. my girlfriend (never a jw) had met them a few times.
a few months ago we went for a meal at their house.
i think that my parents had decided beforehand to 'get her alone', so my dad asked for help with his pc in his office at home.. my mum and my girlfriend were in the living room; i could hear what was going on from where i was.. my mum was basically doing the "it is the truth you know" bit (a jw mind trick; sincere repetiton, eye contact, gesture, head nod... what do they think they are, some kind of jedi??

Abaddon gave me a lot to think about here. I have a long ongoing battle with my aged mother. It goes back to when we were all witnesses, my parents getting baptized when I was five years old. But, lately I have been feeling that she has a multiple personality disorder, or is schizophrenic, or some other mental illness. I do believe she has a form of mental illness, but the points he made about the cult personality are very true. There are times, few and far between, when she can be a normal mother, and maybe the real personality comes through. The rest of the time, she is just a very difficult person to be around, and I am not the only one who feels this way. The latest problem she caused, involved the elders in her congregation, because she just couldn't shut up, badmouthing me. I have told her in no uncertain terms over the past five years to NOT talk about us to anyone. "Don't give any information, no matter what you think they will do with it. Don't answer any questions about us. Tell them they need to talk to us" etc. We are not df'd or da'd, but no thanks to her. Fortunately, the elders in her congregation see her as a strange woman, but they still fawn all over her, and listen to her anyway. But, my husband went to talk to one of the elders to defend us, (he is a friend, and it was informal) and this elder's wife, who reported it all to me. The PO in the congregation told her that much of the trouble is of her own making, and that she needs to learn how to talk to me, so as not to "push my buttons". She is terrified that we will stop supporting her, and she will have to go to a home, but still she talks. We will always take care of her, so she needn't worry there. I sent her montly check to her yesterday, with a man I knew who was going to visit her, and she sent me a thank you not, very stiff, but a thank you anyway. I think eventually I will go over there again, but I am so angry still, that I just have to stay away for now. Anyway, thanks Abaddon.

Where do you go to die?
by wasasister infor the majority of humans, certain events are surrounded by tradition and ritual.
marriage, the birth of children, entrance into adulthood, and death are all life-events which will be marked by most with a form of religious ceremony.
for the few who have left off affiliation with a religious organization, these events are marked differently - more by tradition than by mystic ritual.

Most funeral homes have simple services, and can be conducted by the funeral home director. Pretty generic. We have talked about this in regards to deaths in our family, and think we would do a service in our living room. Still tossing it around. Hope that helped a bit.

You are right. No way to know for sure. Just quoting Bible stuff and personal opinions. I only know that there is nothing for sure, and that I am not convinced of anything yet. I was only quoting what my little group is saying these days. And I am usually the one who differs in thoughts. I don't know what I believe half the time. I do know that JW's have nothing. Absolutely NOTHING.

Yikes. You misunderstood me. I meant that Christ died for all men, including Hindus, Muslims, and all men. That's all. And, that there is no one true religion. Been there, done that.
