  just a (slightly) quick introduction for now.

  i am a 4th generation born in.

  Hi, Moment.

  It must be really tough being a born-in, especially 4th generation. I had a pre-JW life, so I feel very lucky that I had something to go back to. You, though, have to be a trail blazer like Daniel Boone, traipsing off into the unknown. The unknown is a scary place, but only because you have not experienced it. Even I, when I left the borg, experienced great anxiety for about two years. That was 1979, pre-internet, with no support groups.

  You might need some psychological help in your journey into the great wilderness of Infinite Possibility. Once you're into it, you will love the great discoveries about yourself and the world at large that you will make every day.

  Slow down, and take one step at a time. There is certainly no harm in going to a movie with him. You don't need to jump ahead and fret over things that have not happened yet, and may never happened. LouBelle is right: there is no need to reveal that you ever had anything to do with JW's Baby steps, okay?

  At what age do most or many JWs kids count as "publisher?"

  not saying that's my personal opinion, but this week's congregation bible study asks the viewpoint question, "would apostate literature or internet sites intrigue you or repulse you?

  It seems to me that it would be frowned upon to volunteer for or donate to a charitable organization. There were JW's I knew 'way back when who would not accept help from charitable organizations, particularly if they had a religious connection. However, they would go to the state or other government agencies for welfare, food stamps, etc.

  raymond f:: Thanks for the Greek lesson. I still can't get my head around how "knowledge" could be inaccurate. All knowledge has to be accurate, doesn't it? Otherwise, it would not be knowledge, but misinformation.

  so ex-jw's are evil we're on "satan's side" as my dad told me and we aren't worth a hello.

  If JW's are allowed to do all of the things on your list, earthfire, it's news to me. I have been out since 1979, so maybe I'm out of touch with the rules.

  As an adult approaching 30, I was ordered not to watch Eric Clapton on TV. I was counseled about wearing a cute little hat that matched my outfit AND about buying a 25-cent bet on a baseball game (although I'm sure it would have been okay to spend it on a candy bar so I could get fat), and was derided for taking a couple of college courses.

  When did it become okay to be somewhat normal like other people?

  this is a terrible story, as i believe from other reports that places like this were common in the usa.

  (as well as, the uk, ireland, canada, australia and god knows where else).you can only wonder how no-one else in authority knew about this.

  This is one of the most sickening things I ever heard of. If my child had died there, I would have demanded an investigation and filed the mother of all lawsuits. This horror is a prime example of what isolation and high control can wreak on the innocent.

  It also puts things into perspective for those of us who were abused in some way. Compared to those kids' experiences, ours were a walk in the rose garden where there were some thorns.

  Are any of the perpetrators still around. I hope they rot in hell. I would not be opposed to a burning hell for people who treated children the way described in this post.
