with the 4th anniversary of my parents death looming and the anniversary of their last wedding anniversary party where my family was together and happy for the last time just being past ....i was feeling kind of depressed and wanted to reach out to what family i have left.
i sat there and debated in my mind if i should do it...should i try and reach out to my sister..see if i could reach her across the barrier of the jw religion.
should i try to remind her that we are sisters...we were sisters before we became jws and we will always be sisters.
Your sister's reaction is a classic example of a lack of "natural affection." It is so sad that so many families are in your situation because they have been indoctrinated with some bizarre notion that expressions of affection for one's own family are indicative of disloyalty to God.
I don't know who said this, but I think of it a lot: "Acceptance is the key to ease in life." It is not easy to let family members go and be there if and when they are ready to accept you for the unique person you are, but it usually works better that trying to persuade people to love you when they are required to hate.
You seem to be going in the right direction. Keep it up! There will be lots of people who accept you and love you for just who you are. Hang in there...

why would someone, upon tasting freedom, want to return to bondage?.
lets call it the "shawshank redemption syndrome" to those that havn't seen the movie, its one of those 'triumph of the human spirit over extream adversity' movies.. the movie depicts the lives of prisoners & how difficult it iz to adjust to freedom after years of incarceration, you know, the guy that breaks the store window so he can go back to prison & whats familiar.. i can understand, in light of the above, how some who leave the borg,& then have a yearning for the old ways.
the watchtower offers answers for everything, you need not think, just play by the rules & everything will be ok, because we have the real god on our side!
The phenomenon of people returning to the org reminds me of the way children can be so attached to their abusive parents.
I wonder if anyone has ever done brain scans of people who have been brainwashed and had to re-adjust to living without brainwashing and/or abuse. I would be interested if anyone is aware of any such research or if anyone here is qualified to undertake such research.
Change and adjustment (just ask any addict) can be difficult to maintain, to say the least. Physical addiction is not the only kind.

just curious...after a long discussion with my mother on her 34 year career as a faithful jw, i asked her how many people she brought in, not counting my sister, myself, my father?
4 in 34 years.
since i started going door to door at age 5 until age 18, i never had a bible study with anyone.
One cousin, then his parents, one stranger/householder, God forgive me.

forgive me if this has been covered before but i only drop in occasionally.. i seem to remember some months ago that a poster talked about the planned relocation of the british branch to milton keenes.
i think he said that the move had been scrapped because of the lack of growth in britain?
i also believe that this decision had been made before the sept 11th attacks.
Shock a rock! They acknowledged the talents of "brothers AND SISTERS"!!!!!!! (emphasis added)

when i was 17 my older brother went to bethel.
our whole family was so proud that we had someone in high places.
lol well it didn't last long.
Try switchboard.com. You can search by typing in his last name and first name or initial, and telephone directory listings from all over the U. S. will be listed for that name unless you specify a geographic location.
I sure hope you find him.
Best regards,
Mum

recently in another thread, dannybear mentioned jim jones and the mass suicides at jonestown.
about two years ago when the issue of cults in france was a hot topic in ex-jw discussions, i became curious about jim jones and his followers.
i had seen the news reports and horrific footage, but i wanted to understand how a man could convince 638 of his adult followers to kill themselves and 276 children.. for me, jim jones's story is also close to home.
Thanks for that, Ginny. I remember when it happened. An article in the Awake! (or was it the Watchtower) was published shortly afterwards in which the reader was warned to have a strong mind, or something to that effect. Oh boy, did an alarm go off in my head! I knew that I would have done anything I was told by the "Faithful and Discreet Slave."
A year later, I was freeee!!!

i was getting the kids ready for bed last night and i heard the doorbell ring.
it was about 7:30 and i had no idea who it could be.
i opened the door and 2 elders from our hall were standing there.
I agree with Radar and Shimmer.
If they offer "help" to assist you to no longer be a JW, tell them you don't need their help. Then tell them to take a hike or you will call the police. After all, if they are at your front door, they are on your private property without your permission.

i've been raised a witness, and i've been spoon-fed.
all that stuff about 1914, no facial hair, and every other jw teaching that they talk about.
i've been a bit disillusioned lately with the stuff i've found out about the society, with some research of my own and other research from sites or sources like these.
Welcome, davey!
How do they explain away the "new light" (which is not so new anymore) that Jesus is the mediator ONLY for the 144,000?
