konceptual99, excellent analysis!
It's all about perception: "Advertise, advertise, advertise the King and his Kingdom!"
reading the first couple of awakes for 2013 i think there is a pattern developing.. they have the regular "could it have happened by chance" article on something amazing in nature but they are also interviewing a scientist who is also a witness.
this is a pretty interesting tack on a number of levels.. firstly it is sending out the implicit message that "look, this educated person accepts creation, the flood and every other account that is at odds with generally accepted science, so that should give you confidence that you are right as well".
secondly, as a magazine designed for public comsumption is suggests to non-witnesses that there are many well educated people who accept the bible.

an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for
Ok, I've been watching ST in every incarnation since I was a wee-lad and I love the stuff, but I gotta' say it, "Who wrote that crap? It doesn't even make sense!!!"
How can a fleet be "detonated"?

you may have heard the expression: "the map is not the territory.
" have you ever thought about how this idea may help you reach loved ones stuck in a cult?
the phrase has been attributed to polish-american scientist and philosopher alfred korzybski.
Hi Ray!
I don't know that book. I'll have to check it out.
Your comment about the semantics class is intriguing. What was it about that class that was so fascinating?

i had been studying with the jehovah's witnesses for the last couple years.
they have been interesting study sessions and have learned quite a bit about them and their beliefs.
much of what they teach is what i had learned through personal bible study.. growing up was normal.
Change Name: My handle is Change Name. I have used this handle for a very long time.
Yes, we see. Since 11/25/2012.
So for you, is "a very long time" the reciprocal of the WTBTS's "soon"?
BTW, I noticed you didn't respond to my last reply to you. Was the significance of the letter "N" in NGO too much for you to contemplate?

The phrase has been attributed to Polish-American scientist and philosopher Alfred Korzybski. It first appeared in print in a paper that Korzybski gave at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1931.
The expression, although somewhat self-explanatory, is meant to illustrate his view that "an abstraction derived from something, or a reaction to it, is not the thing itself." Take a minute and think about what that implies, think about what it really means.
Korzybski held that many people do confuse "maps with territories;" that is, they confuse models of reality with reality itself.
This is a good description of JW beliefs. Over and over again they are indoctrinated with a set of beliefs to the point that they come to accept them as real. This is further reinforced with scriptures that talk about "realities though not beheld" and the "reality" of "things unseen."
For those of us that were once believers we can certainly relate to the truth of this. We also know first-hand how difficult it can be to get our family and friends still in to wake up and see the inconsistencies, corruption and outright lies of the WTBTS.
A lot of this has to do with the way their belief system has been carefully built over time. Part of this is that JW's are trained to only see things from a very particular point of view. Not too surprisingly this is the WTBTS's point of view.
In his recent book, our own JWN member and soon-to-be celebrated author, OTWO used the analogy of anamorphosis to explain the way JW's look at the world/perceive things. They are trained to see everything from only a certain perspective; and when they do, everything makes sense according to that particular perspective: the JW paradigm.
Here's a pretty mind blowing video that illustrates how completely deceiving things can be when viewed from only a single perspective, a perspective that is not coincidentally controlled/dictated by the one presenting the illusion.
Enjoy!
In the case of JW's, the map IS the territory.
This got me thinking. Instead of trying to reach our loved ones with a direct assault on their beliefs, perhaps there is a better way. In fact, the direct approach never works because their defenses automatically go up.
What if we would bit by bit enourage them to consider things from a slightly different perspective, to try to look at reality from a differing point of view? If we could do that, they would see what a flat illusion JW "theology" really is for themselves and we wouldn't have to explain anything to them. They would see it and know it for themselves.
The illusion would be blown!
Your comments are welcome.

Change Name: But a little bit food for though is the accusation that the WT joined the UN.
Welcome.
The UN/NGO controversy is NOT blather, but a fact. Read this:
Watchtower's United Nations Association |
often in posts, i see ones referring to "the cross" or the jws view of an "upright stake" in posts on this and other sites.
a few years ago i saw "prince the rock entertainer" draw attention in a concert to "a lie told over and over" and then a cross appeared in a large picture behind him on stage demonstrating his epiphany through studying with the jws, about the instrument of death actually being an upright stake...to cite just one example.. all researchers and biblical enthusiasts should take note of the work accomplished by gunnar samuelsson and his team.
the publication was released in 2011 entitled crucifixion in antiquity and examines all scholarly works previously done on the subject as well as exaustive research by a team of people looking for facts and archeology to support one view or the other.
It's an interesting question, but even when I was the most die-hard JW I always thought this was much ado about not-that-much. Really what matters is the concept THAT Christ died for our sins, not HOW he died.
Now that I've woken up to TTATT the hypocrisy of JW's supposed search for "accurate knowledge" just infuriates me.
The WT leaders are completely incompetent and corrupt. They make the Pharisees of the Bible look like wannabe wankers.

for any old-school ex-jws here that remember my many posts about my abusive jw mother and my sister committing suicide because of it...she passed away this morning because she began to bleed out and refused a transfusion.
she had been in the hospital for a month.
it appears she suffered a stroke and wasn't found by the brothers & sisters for three days (they missed her at the meetings).
Tatiana, I just saw this. I am sorry for your loss ... on many levels.
