Alternatives to JWs
by Xander insince there are new people coming to this board on fairly regular basis with questions about the jw religion, i thought i'd pose this topic.. many, upon leaving the organization, don't really know where to turn for guidance.
"look to yourself" doesn't really cut it when you've been told how to think your whole life.. many choose atheism, which is fine.
however, for those still looking for a religion, here is a site that lists many of the worlds major religious movements.

you know...i even remember a time when i heard during the memorial speech that "this may even be our last memorial",,,,yeah, uh that was like 15 years ago!
Or how about the one where you shouldn't miss the meetings because at any given time, the great tribulation could start and and they'd only be able to tell the people in attendance any "secret" information needed to survive armaggedon!

No more shunning from me!
by Dawn ini was a jw for years, and i constantly run into old "friends" at the store, gym, doctor's, cinema, etc.
up to now, i have just looked the other way because i knew they couldn't talk to me.. but after reading some posts here - i realized that i was contributing to their shunning.
acting like i was still under their law - well no more!!.

Hey Dawn....YOU GO GIRL!
when i was first given the boot, i had terrible anxiety about going out in public. I was scared of going to the Mall, grocery store, etc. by myself for fear i would be "seen" by someone....because of how i would feel. I finally decided to see a therapist about this because i realized this was turning into an awful PHOBIA! i was afraid of running in people ANYWHERE in public.
well...after several suggestions from my therapist to take short trips out in public ALONE....i realized, why should I BE A PRISONER. My new philosphy became " F...k 'em!" and you know what? OH MY GOD WHAT POWER i felt the first time i looked them straight in the eyes and SMILED! and if course, i always made sure i was dressed well, hair was done, make-up nice....why? so they could see "Hey, maybe there IS life after the WT." No I actually look foward to being seen. I like them to go back and gossip that they saw me and that I LOOKED GREAT! HAHAHAHA....WHAT A RUSH!

My heart is aching!
by Aunty inhi all - i was just reading the responses to the post on beating children in the washroom and my heart is aching remembering what it was like.
i literally have this hollow feeling in my heart right now remembering all the little children that were punished, and those who are still in, but have no way of knowing how different life can be.
you trust your parents to love and take care of you - and then they hit you - but you don't think, "hey they shouldn't do that" - you think, "i'm bad".

Wow. just read the "beating children in washroom" post too. My God, i hadn't thought about those days in so long. I remember as a child several parents mentioning a "joke about sister so-n-so taking her screaming child back to the bathroom and the child screaming "jehovah, save me!" They thought that was soooo cute. I can't tell you the times i was taken and spanked....some kids got slapped in the face. Then the moms would chat in the bathroom until we kids "calmed down".
I too, as an adult, am guilty of following this rediculous trend. When my son (who is now 13) was less than a year old, my god,,,, i remember taking him to the bathroom and spanking him to be quiet! He wasn't even 1 yet! But i thought i was doing what i was expected to do.....Thinking back, i'm wracked with guilt thinking WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING?? how can one expect children (with their short attention spans) to possibly sit still during meetings so boring ADULTS can barely stand still for!? I thank god i quit,,,,and finally saw the light. My son doesn't remember any of this fortunately as I left the ORG shortly after he was 2 yrs. old. All i can do is pray for forgiveness for this form of abuse I so easily administered thinking it was "good christian parenting."

Getting over this Memorial pressure
by nativenyr23 inwhen does it end, you guys?
i've been out of the org for 9 years now.
my family is still in .....and after not speaking to me for 5 years, they're now talking to me again.

Wow Larc, you know i didn't think of that one? Yadirf is probably counting the keystrokes and minutes for his field service report!heeheeeheehee!! And Ranchette, mom's just GREAT at the guilt trip thing? I finally spoke to my mom about an hour ago - she didn't know my ex didn't take the boys to the memorial tonight after all. So i guess grandma didn't tell her anything about our conversation earlier. So ....alls well that ends well, i guess. Mom might actually be respecting the little bit of boundary i've set. I hope so...but you're right...Francois is RIGHT ON w/the boundary thing.
LOVE ALL OF YOU. thanks.

Yadirf:
My story doesn't contradict itself at all. When i first got outted....I felt very alone and wanted back in - that was until I became informed by reading all the "forbidden" literature....and learning about all the little things the ORG likes to keep quiet from the RAF; and speaking of....if you're so "faithful"...what the hell are you doing here? This forum is forbidden. You're associating with known apostates....Shouldn't you be out selling magazines or something?

since i didn't mention it before, my reply above was for Yadirf.
oh, and by the way...it takes a LOT MORE BALLS to break away from ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING you've ever been associated with your entire life....than to follow suit simply because that's whats's expected of you from your peer group (JWs). but you'll never know what freedom really feels like because YOU have no balls. So don't talk to me about cowardice until you've taken a stand AGAINST your majority and then lived to tell about it.
