New here (sort of)
by TheListener inalthough this is my first post i must say that i feel like i know so many here very well.
your posts have helped me tremendously.
as i become more comfortable i hope to join in the topics and begin to share more about myself.. for now i'll say that i am currently a jw that began researching information about two years ago to improve my faith and knowledge.

Why wouldn't it tie into the cult issue? Marina wants to live with her JW grandparents so that she can continue to be a JW but Mario wants to keep her far away from that cult. Marina could bnefit from Dr Phil's input.

I saw this same show yesterday and I could not help thinking about how much Dr Phil could help Mario and Marina. I had just read Mario's latest update and was thinking how wonderful it would be if Dr Phil could get Marina into some live-in treatment center and he would be paying for it all! Mario's story would certainly catch the eye of the producers on the show. Could someone contact Mario and see what his thoughts are on this?

however, i have a brother who is a jw and there is a serious problem that he is struggling with, which pertains to his horrible marriage, abusive wife, divorce and being "kicked out" of jw as a member... or whatever jw's call it.
he has been married to a woman for 22 years.

Hal,
One more thing that just came to my mind. Before you join/post to another internet group, it would be a good idea to 'lurk' (read posts w/o posting) a while before you make your first post. That way you will become familiar with the 'feel' of the atmosphere of THAT board.
But the most important piece of advice is that you wait awhile before you join another board. And DO change your handle!!

However, my response may be very slow. I normally use Netscape 3.4 whis is not compatibale with hotmail or the PM system used on this board. I do have a newer browser, but that is sooo slow to use since I have an old, old 'puter that runs on Windows 95. I do check these every so often, but not daily. Hal,
As much as you want to help your brother see "THE LIE" that they call 'da troof', it will be extremely hard to do. I studied with an elder's wife for 8 months and was still unsucessful. Every week I came prepared with documentation after documentation proving error after error that the Watchtower has spuen forth year after year in their publications. But it did not even make a dent. Until someone is ready to begin to THINK about what is before their eyes, they will remain blind as a bat!
The best advise I can give you right now is to continue your research on the JW belief system. Continue to read this DB - both the current topics and the 'archived' past threads. If you want to begin at the very beginning of this board, just click on page numbebr one in each of the forums. Happy reading.
When that is done come back and post again. If you go to a new board to post, do not tell very many details in your first post. A short paragraph saying that you are a non-JW who has a JW brother who you would like to see leave the cult. Then ask for suggestions. Keep the family history to yourself. The least said the better.
Oh, and get a new 'handle'. Some of these people post/read several DB's.
Your learning will take time and I understand that time in this situation is critical so while you are learning how to get him out of the WT do this NOW:
Get your niece out of that home. Pay for an apartment for her if that is the only way to do it.
Get your brother AWAY from the wife for safetys sake.
They both need to file a legeal restraining order against the wife for abuse.
Tell your brother to just move out, it does not matter the status of his marriage at this point. You need to convince him that his wife is a danger to his life. If the elders stick their noses in, fine. Then maybe HE will get the help he needs from his local cong.
He is the head of household and according to WT rules, HE is the one to take charge - not his wife. All he need say is that this is HIS way of dealing with an abusive wife. He needs to protect his daughter.
Do NOT try to tell him anything about getting out of the WT now. He will not listen to you. Wait until after he and his daughter are safe from the wife before you say anything. -

All of you guys are MISSING the reason he came to these boards in the first place.
He came asking for information and understanding about the JW Religion. He did NOT come in here asking a DB to solve his brother's problems.
Now how about stopping all the bickering and help this man understand WHY his brother is so messed up in his thinking! Help Hal understand what the dub religion does to one's thinking abilities. THAT is what he wants to find out.

I know that you think that sounds like a contradiction to you, but let me assure you, it just could be on the up and up.
I have an extremely brainy friend who holds a PHD in Physics and he choose to work for a grocery supplier in the office as a PART-TIME data-entry person. He even turned down the opportunity for more responsibility within the company. He did this because his head was so busy thinking of his own scientific projects and he did not want 'work duties' to get in the way of that thinking.
Another aspect to consider is this: My friend could not find work in his field so he applied for anything that would pay the bills. He was usually informed by the person doing the interviewing that he was 'just too over-quallified' for the position when applying for anything un-scientific.

Just some general 'netiquette' help here, Hal,
When someone types in 'ALL CAPS' for the entire message, it is considered 'bad taste', because it is like shouting at someone in typing.
Also it is considered 'bad taste' to post someone's private email or PM without permission from the original sender, ie do NOT copy and paste any emails you have from your brother to anyone without getting his permission.
The exception to this rule being if the email or PM did not contain personal information. If someone sends you a url, news story, joke etc., usually that is ok to share in a public setting. Also it is considered 'bad taste' to forward personal emails, the exception being the same as above. But even there you must be careful not to disclose the original sender's private info such as is contained in the email header (the top part of an email where the sender's addy is).
For more information, it might be well to use a search engine for 'netiquette'.
Now to change the subject to JW'isms:
If you want to get a quick picture of what it is like to live life as a 'dub' in 'dubland' (JW - JWland), a reading of George Orwell's books "1984" and "Animal Farm" will give you a very, very good idea.
Big Brother = Watchtower Society, elders
Thought Police = Watchtower Society, elders
I'm sure you'll get the idea! There are 'spies' everywhere in dubland. and these 'spies' consider it their god-given right and duty to report everything that they see and hear to the elders.
An 'out-of-print' book title by Heather and Gary Botting said it ALL - "The Orwellian World of Jehovah's Witnesses". The book was published by University of Toronto Press in 1984 ISBN 0-8020-6545-7. If you are lucky you may be able to find a copy to read using your local Library's Inter-Libary-Loan (ILL) function. Just ask at the Reference Desk and they will take it from there.
