After listening to the letter read last night, and reading the OP again, I don't think it was the usual routine letter. I think it is a reminder to donate for the NWT which everyone got for free a few weeks ago. With the date of the letter being Oct 18, only a couple of weeks after the new release.

There is usually a call out for donations at this time of the year because of the tax season. I would expect that there is a WT article also for the same reason.

In a followup to my previous post about the blood transfusion/Dracula theme (it's Halloween, right?),

I must have been mistaken about the original 1931 movie. It only mentions blood transfusions, but doesn't show it. I found the movie here:

The transfusions are mentioned but not portrayed at about 29:15.

I must have been thinking of a later remake which I believe is from the early '90's which shows a transfusion being performed:

The original book does mention blood transfusions several times. I didn't know there was such a thing as blood transfusions in the 1890's, but apparently it was well known enough that Bram Stoker could describe it in the book. It is curious how many of the same ignorant preconceptions about blood that the WT society put out in the 50's were mentioned in this novel from the 1890's.

Forgive me for coming late to the discussion, but has anyone ever addressed any connection of the WT blood preoccupation with the 1931 Dracula movie with Bela Lugosi? The later genre of vampire literature doesn't feature blood tranfusions much, nor did the original Bram Stoker novel that I recall, but the 1931 movie had a very memorable scene in which the heroine received a blood transfusion which was spoken of as 'feeding'. The entire movie was based on the idea of 'feeding on blood', which in turn was based on the Victorian sensiblilities of the 1890's, which now is seen as as a substitute for 'fluids', ie. it's all a sexual metaphor. After I saw the original movie, I have wondered if the early WT leader, whoever it was, that came up with this insane doctrine, had seen the movie and was influenced by it.

Just a thought. Has anyone else commented on this before?

My decision to openly greet df persons in the hall

at the moment i am still going to all the meetings (for family reasons).. we have at the moment 1 df person who regularly comes (already df for 1.5 years).. when i opened him the door i always greeted him but in the hall i didn't as others could see it.. now i decided that my conscience can not bear this any longer.

i will greet him also in the hall or when others are around.. if any elders notice it and talk to me, i tell them my conscience does not allow to not greet that person.. did any of you do that too and have some experiences?.

Several times at funerals in the Kingdom Hall I have seen disfellowshipped relatives of the deceased and I have always gone out of my way to give a huge hug and offer my condolences. They have always seemed to appreciate it, and no one has ever approached me about it. I just think it is the right thing to do under the circumstances.

However, the regular meetings are another matter, as some have noted. If the disfellowshipped one is at a regular meeting, they probably are trying to get back in, so they may not appreciate the attention.

I have a copy of this as well as another of her novels. When my mother studied in the early sixties this book was still passed around as good reading. The supposed spirit connection is entirely the result of the forward to 'angels and women'. Mrs. Smith did not write the forward, in fact she had died years before and was never aware that her 'Seola' was republished. in my opinion her books are simply fanciful nineteenth century fiction... Nothing more. no more spirit influenced than Star Trek ,Star Wars , star gate, or any science fiction.

The question remains as to who wrote that forward? My vote is for Clayton Woodworth, who of all the early Bible Students was probably the goofiest.

Traveling snitches and the tentacles of Rutherford's takeover

in the 50's, 60's, 70's, when i was an active jw, the traveling overseers both district and circuit,(before elder arrangement) came around to visit local congregations.. two points to be made about this.

when pastor russell died, rutherford wanted federal control of the varied congregations for himself.

under russell, all the groups were independent and unencumbered by an organization.

The comparison of the terms District and Circuit are interesting. However, there has been a long practice in the US to refer to traveling ministers as 'circuit riders', usually in the context of 1800's frontier.

There used to be overhead walkways between the Adams street factory buildings too. I wonder if they are still there considering those properties were all sold. For appearance sake Brooklyn Heights would never have allowed overhead walkways, so it isn't surprising that they put in tunnels. I remember them as being well lit, lightly colored, but long and narrow. Boring to walk through.

The WT is setting themselves up for another fall with this one. I thought the overlap idea had them off the hook, but no, now they have tied a definite time period to their prophecies again . They never learn.

It appears to me that SBF had a very difficult choice to make and he made it. We don't know what all the issues are. I say just let it rest.

There are worse things that can happen.
