It’s just COVID 19. They'll be back to the usual after it is over, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it is a year or more.

by Sea Breeze inmy 87 year old dad called me for the first time in 16 years the other day .... just to chat.
i was floored to say the least since he didn't even bother to call me when my mom died several years ago.
he called again today to inquire how i felt about jehovah's witnesses.

Breaking: Beards in The Watchtower
by neat blue dog inthe latest issue of the watchtower shows a man with a beard praying.. .
i fully expected to see him 'progress' to clean-shaven in the following pictures, but instead he is still bearded when 'applying bible principles'.. .
i then realized that he was already featured on the cover itself.. .

I remember reading somewhere, I think it was in one of PSL Johnson's books, that there was a huge bruhaha about beards when Rutherford took over. In the Russell time, just about all the Bible Student men had a beard. It was customary at the time, and Russell had one. Rutherford made just about all the men at Bethel shave theirs off and go clean shaven. It became a way of showing loyalty to Rutherford, and was part of the distancing from the Russellite faction that culminated in the expulsion of the 4 directors, and later the discarding of many of the Russell teachings.

Good for him. It is a commentary on how inept the WT is in making a connection with young people. He doesn't say anything about doctrine, nothing about the organization's finances, the reason he left is that the Witness life is not satisfying to him. He wanted his life back. -

I turned down an offer to be a MS. It was about the only good decision I made when I was 19.

I agree completely, I believe Rutherford introduced things with the intent of provoking a confrontation, and to take things to court. Arguing before the Supreme Court was his dream and goal.

War is a Racket, by Smedley D Butler, 1935
by dropoffyourkeylee ini have just become aware of a book, published in the us in 1935, called 'war is a racket', by smedley d butler, a former marine major general who was very critical of the us involvement in ww1.
since it was apparently a popular book at the time, and butler was a prominent figure, i am wondering if rutherford's adoption of the slogan 'religion is a snare and a racket' may have been borrowed from butler.. if so, it wouldn't be the first time rutherford drew upon familiar terms of the 20's and 30's to create slogans or wt articles..

Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated - Mark Twain
Seriously though, the WT has stated (according to my wife, who is on all the zoom meetings, etc) that over 800 JWs have died from COVID-19 complications.
