I just recently became aware of this book 'When Prophecy Fails'. It is quite interesting. This book was one of the first describing cognitive dissonance.
There is presently a pdf available free online.
the person may have prepared himself psychologically for an event that never eventuates, and, worse still, may have even made public his predictions about the event.
what happens when an important prophecy fails and dissonance is aroused between what was predicted and what actually occurred is described in the classic field study carried out by festinger, riecken and schachter (1956).
in the mid-1950s mrs marion keech, a suburban housewife, began to receive messages from outer space.

after further review and thought, i really don't see how removing a monument or statue that may be truly offensive to a large group of people is in some way rewriting history.. i think of germany or other parts of europe.
you don't see swastikas on buildings or statues of hitler or mussolini or other upper level generals in public.
would it be good for a person (think jewish) to drive around a city and see hitler in a public park, even though it is "historical?
If you took down the statue of everyone with whom you have a disagreement, you will soon have no statues at all.
Another major change that is occurring is the movement away from English speakers, so non-English sites are gaining in importance.

To me it has a lot to do with the intent of the statue, or more importantly, what current viewers perceive as the intent of the statue. In the American South, there are many statues that were placed in the Jim Crow Intimidation era that were intended as a sly statement of superiority. I think it is right to remove these images. But to extend the removal to just about any statue representing someone with a less than stellar history is too much.
featured on jworg , what does the bible say about racism?
.
and a video , johny and gideon: once enemies, now brothers , two men from south africa.. what did russell and rutherford have to say about racism in the congregations ?.
The WT was definitely a late follower in civil rights in the US and elsewhere. Congregations in the South were segregated until the '70's in some cases. And the apartheid segregation in South Africa persisted much later than that.
my 87 year old dad called me for the first time in 16 years the other day .... just to chat.
i was floored to say the least since he didn't even bother to call me when my mom died several years ago.
he called again today to inquire how i felt about jehovah's witnesses.
It’s just COVID 19. They'll be back to the usual after it is over, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it is a year or more.
the latest issue of the watchtower shows a man with a beard praying.. .
i fully expected to see him 'progress' to clean-shaven in the following pictures, but instead he is still bearded when 'applying bible principles'.. .
i then realized that he was already featured on the cover itself.. .
I remember reading somewhere, I think it was in one of PSL Johnson's books, that there was a huge bruhaha about beards when Rutherford took over. In the Russell time, just about all the Bible Student men had a beard. It was customary at the time, and Russell had one. Rutherford made just about all the men at Bethel shave theirs off and go clean shaven. It became a way of showing loyalty to Rutherford, and was part of the distancing from the Russellite faction that culminated in the expulsion of the 4 directors, and later the discarding of many of the Russell teachings.
