Is this for real? They take down all the admittedly racist statues all throughout the South, and then they put this up? Where is this and in what context?

My wife is still in, and spends some time each week writing letters, in which they typically place some type of brochure. It is small and light and can be mailed along with the letter without any extra postage (US), whereas a larger magazine would need extra postage and would be a little too bulky for the envelope.
Their needs have changed, so I don't think it farfetched to look for the Awake to be discontinued.

U.S. Announcement at CLAM w/o March 3 - Donation of Trailers Needed
by JWTom inat our clam meeting this past week there was a rather lengthy announcement asking for the donation of travel trailers.
needed to be at least 22 feet long and not older than a 2005 model year.
lots of other details were in the announcement about what was desired related condition of the trailer, etc.

I'd say either temporary worker housing for a construction project (and later resale), as previous posts have mentioned, or housing for 'disaster relief' workers. The disaster relief is one of their money making schemes, where they send volunteers with donated materials to fix damaged homes, then get the owners to turn over the insurance money to the WT.

I don't recall the exact dates, but the Awake was first published I think about the time of WW2 or shortly afterwards. In the Russell days there was just the Watchtower. Russell had stated he only wanted one magazine; it seems to me that he may have even had it in his 'will' that there would only be one magazine, hence when Rutherford started the Golden Age there was a bit of a brouhaha. Then the Golden Age ceased and was replaced by Consolation for a while. Only after Rutherford died Consolation was replaced by Awake.
Maybe they are going to replace the Awake with something else, completely digital probably.

1969 "fact": You will never grow old in this present system of things
by Ding inawake!
"if you are a young person, you also need to face the fact that you will never grow old in this present system of things.
because all the evidence in fulfillment of bible prophecy indicates that this corrupt system is due to end in a few years... therefore, as a young person, you will never fulfill any career that this system offers.

The reason this keeps coming up is that people were hurt by it. Anyone who made a choice in life at the time based on the false expectation (which was invented by and fostered by the Watchtower organization and its representatives) was hurt. There are precious life resources that are spent in one way or another. Some who decided to not get married and have children are now facing their elder years without the joys of children and grandchildren. Others missed out on careers they would have found fulfilling. Others decided to not pursue something they had a great talent for, such as music, poetry, etc and instead spent those years knocking on doors chasing a false dream.
The WT society earned my contempt when in my twenties, I realized that my decision to not go to college hurt me, and it was all based on their false beliefs.

Yes, a lot of the figures in the Bible are exaggerations, or rough estimates made decades or even centuries after the event. In all fairness though, just about all the written records of ancient history did the same thing. Herodotus, Josephus, they all never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

What they call field service now under COVID consists of chatting a couple of hours on zoom while hand writing letters in the US mail. It is hopelessly mind numbing and boring. How long can they possibly keep this up without people quitting? How can they call it 'ministry'? I think the basic core activity (field service) that defines the JWs is at risk and it will force a fundamental change in the dynamics of the religion going forward.

I remember those times (I was 8 in '69), and can vouch for the fact that this mentality was the prevailing attitude and belief of the Witnesses at the time. Virtually everyone believed it. Assembly talks, Circuit Servant talks, all of it pounded the ideas in; most of it never ended up in print. Fortunately a few things were printed (like this Awake article) or otherwise recorded so we have some proof of what was taught.

May JW Broaadcast - so bad, "it's not even wrong"
by FFGhost indon't know how many of y'all still watch it.. this month's topic is "the king of the north" - cook goes into monotonous detail over the jw interpretation about rome, germany, ussr, russia, etc.. leaving aside for other commentators the emotionally manipulative videos of jws in russian holding cells, the tearjerker interviews, the god-awful stiffness of cook (i suspect he has never genuinely smiled, much less laughed, in his 60+ years), just thought i'd comment on one topic.. the centerpiece of the program is a "morning worship" monologue from splane.
let's again just leave to the side the dude's pomposity, smugness, and inflated sense of his own genius, and think about this part of his monologue.. he was tracing the history of the "king of the north" and talked about how "britain" (not england, not the united kingdom, not great britain, but "britain" - no idea why they have that fixation - anyway...) became the kotn in the 19th century.. paraphrasing his comments: "britain would not have become kotn if france had its way.
france was much wealthier and more powerful, but at the battle of waterloo, britain defeated france.

In the US, bad weather on Election day has been interpreted to be good for Republicans (conservative) and bad for Democrats (liberal). Especially true for the South, where on Election day the weather is carefully watched due to the larger percentage of African American voters (more often Democrat).

I overheard parts of the broadcast as the wife was listening to it. It sounded like a third grader explaining to his mom what he heard in history class.
