Remembering Rutherford
by Sea Breeze inhe seems to me to be the angriest and most ill-tempered of all the wt presidents, especially after his stint in prison and failed prophecies.. “regarding his misguided statements as to what we could expect in 1925, he [rutherford] once confessed to us at bethel, “i made an ass of myself.”” watchtower 1984 oct 1 p.24.
rutherford died at beth sarim on january 8, 1942, at the age of 72.

There is a video out there somewhere that shows Rutherford drinking from a glass, and it sure looks like he is inebriated. Maybe someone can provide a link to it.
I don't think Rutherford was any more or less a charlatan than Russell, Franz or any of the others, but I do think that he a shocking disregard for his followers. He instituted doctrines and practices that hurt people, and he didn't seem to care. I believe he intentionally provoked a lot of the legal issues in the '30's and into the '40's just so he could get court cases on the books to establish precedents. Likewise, his deliberate provocation of Hitler in the '30s was a terrible action, ultimately causing the death or incarceration of many of the Bible Students.

Dante's Inferno 1911 film
by dropoffyourkeylee ini just watched a 1911 silent film of dante's inferno, with recently (2016) added soundtrack.
the film was produced in italy, but the captions in this copy are in english.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brukyhvsvfg.
rather disturbing, to say the least.. curiously, very little of dante's depiction of hell is hot hellfire.

Curiously, very little of Dante's depiction of hell is hot hellfire. In fact in the closing scene, it is a pit of ice. I'm not sure where Dante got that; I don't think it is Catholic doctrine.

Concerning the current WT cemetery at Wallkill, the burials are accessible online:
https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2403939/memorial-search?page=1#sr-86507218
Rutherford is not listed there, I don't think this graveyard existed in the '40's. The oldest burial I see is AH MacMillan in '66. Curiously, there are entries for a number of people who haven't died yet, maybe they have gravestones there in advance for some reason. Hmmm.
There have been threads on this site before about Rutherford's burial. If I remember correctly, they wanted to bury him at Beth Shan or Beth Sarim, but the zoning authorities wouldn't allow it. Where he ended up I don't know, but other websites suggest the WT had a cemetery on Staten Island where he was buried.

At one time in my life I thought I would someday write a book about the Rutherford years, and started collecting literature (WT and non-WT) of the time period. I came to believe/theorize that a lot of Rutherford's books can only be understood in the context of the time and knowing what he was trying to accomplish. Much of it had to do with the ongoing battle for the loyalty of the Bible Students, when as many as 75% left the WT for other groups of Bible Students. For one instance of many, the WT rejected Christmas in about 1925. Why? Because it was a time with family members, some with WT loyalty and others who had left, would get together and associate. He wanted to break that association to retain the WT adherents. They rejected the cross in the '20s. Why? Because the cross figured prominently in the Bible Students (the cross and crown pin, Cross on the old WT), and he wanted to distance his WT from them.
In time I kind of lost interest in the subject and dropped the project.

It looks like the WATCHTOWER—STUDY EDITION (SIMPLIFIED)'s last issue was December 2018
by Disillusioned JW ini looks like the last issue of the "watchtower—study edition (simplified)" (at least in english) was the december 2018 issue - see https://www.jw.org/en/library/magazines/?contentlanguagefilter=en&pubfilter=ws&yearfilter= .
did anyone else notice that?.

I think they announced that at the time. I guess the regular study edition was so dumbed down anyway they couldn't simplify it any further.

Newly discovered Dead Sea Scrolls with the tetragrammaton within the Greek text
by dropoffyourkeylee inbig news from israel, some previously undiscovered dead sea scrolls have been found with portions of the ot in greek.
it says the name of god is included in hebrew letters within the greek text.. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/16/world/middleeast/dead-sea-scrolls.html.
"the new fragments contain verses from zechariah 8:16-17, including part of the name of god written in ancient hebrew, and verses from nahum 1:5-6, both from the biblical book of the twelve minor prophets.".

Update:
For any who are interested and follow stories like this, The latest BAR (Biblical Archaeology Review) Summer 2021, contains a story and a couple photographs covering this story.
"New Scrolls from the Judean Desert", p17.
The scrolls are the first scrolls discovered in the Judean desert through official excavation in about 60 years, and include parchment fragments of Zechariah and Nahum dating to 2nd Century CE. They are in Greek, with the YHWH tetragrammaton included as four Hebrew characters. The takeaway from the BAR article that I did not pick up on in the first reports was that the Hebrew characters used are 'Old Hebrew' (Paleo-Hebrew), which differs quite a bit in appearance from the Hebrew characters we are used to seeing. The Old Hebrew characters were used in the pre-Exilic period, so for these characters to be used in a 2nd Century CE manuscript is interesting.
The BAR also has a lengthy article (pp 48-55) discussing the Old Hebrew characters, though this article doesn't directly mention the newly discovered scrolls.

I don't recall this thread from four years ago, so I am reading through it the first time. First, I have a copy of the 1950 first edition of the NWT Greek Scriptures and it indeed has 'the' in the verse at Matt 24:45, as dsp demonstrated. If there was some limited edition with 'a' in that verse, I haven't seen one. I doubt it even existed in print. I think Losch was simply mistaken, or at most was referring to some pre-publication draft that he may have access to.
What I think this thread discussion is missing is that at the time of translation, the main 'enemy' of the WT were the Bible Student groups (the 'evil slave class') who believed that Pastor Russell was 'that Servant'. This was a big issue from the '20s into the '60s, and there was a lot of bantering back in forth between the writers of the WT and the writers of the various Bible Students. I used to have some of Paul S L Johnson's books, and you wouldn't believe how many pages he devoted to this inane subject.
The WT belief they espoused at the time (1950) was that the 'faithful and discreet slave' was not an individual, certainly not Russell, but rather was the faithful and discreet slave 'class', which they interpreted as entire body of anointed, all of them. The application of this verse to the Governing Body only, and not to all anointed, is a relatively recent change in doctrine.
