They only got 500,000 for it, which sounds low to me.

I can't say a KH library serves much purpose anymore, if it ever did. I could see it being discontinued
My father had in his possession some of the local congregation's correspondence dating to the '40s when the congregation was formed, like the letters that established the congregation, etc. I thought it was pretty interesting at the time, and that it should be kept for interest and local history. But none of the young elders wanted the stuff around, and I think it was eventually thrown away.

Remembering Rutherford
by Sea Breeze inhe seems to me to be the angriest and most ill-tempered of all the wt presidents, especially after his stint in prison and failed prophecies.. “regarding his misguided statements as to what we could expect in 1925, he [rutherford] once confessed to us at bethel, “i made an ass of myself.”” watchtower 1984 oct 1 p.24.
rutherford died at beth sarim on january 8, 1942, at the age of 72.

To me the objectionable thing that I can't get over is that the WT leadership believes that they and they alone are God's representative organization. If three elders sit across from you and ask, 'Do you believe the Watchtower Society is God's spirit directed organization?' and you say 'No', you can be disfellowshipped/disassociated. That is simply outrageous.

Unnoticed 2018 merger in Qubec
by Corney inthree years ago, on september 1 - 4, 2018, watch tower society of quebec (la tour de garde, société de bibles et de traités du québec), finalised its merger ("voluntary amlgamation") with "123 incorporated congregations of jehovah's witnesses in quebec," with kingdom halls owned by these incorporated congregations (total book value - ca$114,390,856, or 92 million usd) becoming assets of the society.
quebec congregations continue to exist as unincorporated associations and registered charities, while wt quebec only "manages, maintains and constructs" khs ("in cooperation with" wt canada and jw congregation support (formerly regional building committee)) and appoints certain elders to officiate marriages in the province.. sources: .

I don't know about Canada, but in the US over the past decade or so they have made movements to get the deeds of KH properties written so the property belongs to the WT, and not to the local congregation. The result ultimately is that the WT entity 'RBC', Regional Building Committee or something like that, can arbitrarily sell a KH and make the congregation double up use of a KH. Years ago each KH was built, financed, owned and managed by the local congregation with little or no reference to the WT corporation nationally. Now it is different and they (RBC) are using sale of volunteer-built KHs as a money raising scheme.

I certainly agree that sales clerks are rude sometimes and they shouldn't be, but I am wondering a bit about the OP. Stores have to deal a lot with problems like counterfeit money, shoplifters, even armed robberies, and they probably have instructions on such things. Clever thieves have ways of distracting the staff, for instance placing paper money on the counter and letting it fall onto the floor, and while the staff is bending down to pick it up the thief pockets something, or his accomplice does so. So there might have been something else going on in the OP.

Ray Franz in one of his books speaks at some length about the deathbed scene at Beth Sarim. I believe it was Knorr, Covington, and Fred Franz who were there and Rutherford kind of passes the torch (mantle) to them, or so they claimed.
Also, Knorr did very little writing; Fred Franz most likely wrote the book referred to.

Here is the video of Rutherford at Beth Sarim.
This is edited and slowed down in spots, unfortunately, but it is essentially the same I had seen before:

There is a video out there somewhere that shows Rutherford drinking from a glass, and it sure looks like he is inebriated. Maybe someone can provide a link to it.
I don't think Rutherford was any more or less a charlatan than Russell, Franz or any of the others, but I do think that he a shocking disregard for his followers. He instituted doctrines and practices that hurt people, and he didn't seem to care. I believe he intentionally provoked a lot of the legal issues in the '30's and into the '40's just so he could get court cases on the books to establish precedents. Likewise, his deliberate provocation of Hitler in the '30s was a terrible action, ultimately causing the death or incarceration of many of the Bible Students.
