Should we really be surprised that a being capable of such murderous atrocities is capable of lying to his children too?

Who told the first lie?
by nicolaou inthis is a continuation of the discussion which sprang from an unrelated topic.. so according to genesis, who told the first lie?
god told eve that if she ate from the tree of knowledge she would die that very same day.
in response to that statement the devil told her she would not die.. eve ate from the tree and did not die.

FragrantAddendum: he is not a "child killer"
Oh please. Every child on earth drowned in a flood. Innocent Egyptian children killed in their beds. An innocent baby killed to punish it's adulterous parents.
I could cite more examples all from the bible but what good would it do if you won't debate honestly?

FragrantAddendum: @nicolaou, who are some people that you love?
This topic isn't about me but as you asked, I'm a bit of a hippy really. I love pretty much everyone but I do draw the line at child killers.
You know, like your god.

FragrantAddendum: people keep lying about him
I actually agree with this. "God is love" is one of the biggest lies ever told.

Halcon: the snake was present when God gave Adam and Eve his instructions regarding all trees
Incorrect. You're conflating two separate conversations, one that god had with Adam re the tree of knowledge and the second he had with deities unidentified about the tree of life.
Or are you assuming that there were only two trees in this paradisaic garden?
Why am I even indulging this nonsense? Oh right, I started the dumb thread.
Sorry.

If everlasting life really had been in store for Adam and Eve don't you think it would've been the first thing God would've told them they'd forfeited after eating the fruit?
Details like the ground being harder to work and less productive, the newly introduced pain into childbirth and the dominance of a husband over his wife are all a bit grim but you'd think losing immortality might at least get a mention.
Truth is that living forever was never held out as a prospect to these adult children. It was only ever mentioned in a private conversation amongst the gods afterwards as something to be withheld.
Like the Truman Show.

Sea Breeze: Why have you chosen not to believe God?
He kills innocent children. That's a big turnoff for me.

These are all attempts to get around the plain fact that Eve did not die as a result of eating from the tree as God had said she would.
Think of it this way. You are a young woman whose mother is suffering from a particularly virulent form of cancer, all treatments have failed and you have been told your Mum has less than a month to live. However, there's hope! A pioneering oncologist assures you, promises you, that if your mother agrees to an experimental and untested new treatment she positively “will not die.”
You convince your still young but dying mother that this is her best hope. With nothing to lose she agrees to the treatment and lives on for another forty years! She’s with you at your graduation and on your wedding day. She’s a grandmother to your children and is even with you to enjoy a few years of your retirement. Finally, at a fair age in her mid eighties, your mother passes away.
Would it be reasonable of you to label as a liar the medical researcher who promised you four decades earlier that your mother would “not die”? After all, your aged mother is indeed now dead.
Preposterous isn’t it?

And as for the matter of the lie. It does not take thousands of years to eat an apple.

Suspend your disbelief for a moment and consider the details offered in Genesis. God created Adam, and after a short time creates Eve as a partner for him. The two of them have no human parents to nurture and guide them, no grandparents, no uncles or aunts, no experience of growing up with siblings or cousins, no friends, no schooling, no childhood memories to learn from. They are naive, uneducated and inexperienced. A five year-old child would be better prepared for life's challenges than Adam and Eve were. So, when faced with an obedience test is it any wonder that they failed at the first attempt? Especially considering that they were confronted with the master deceiver, Satan himself, who had eons to perfect his craft of deception. After all, he’d successfully convinced a third of the angels of heaven to disobey God so what chance did two human fledglings have?
Surely God would have taken this into consideration right?
No. A death sentence, banishment from paradise and a curse upon all their children. Thanks a lot God.
