How do you deal with "toppers"? [one upmanship]
by compound complex inwhen in conversion, you sometimes get carried away and the talk becomes all about you.. then, you remember you're in a conversation, say you're sorry, and allow the other person to talk.
she goes on about what's happening in her life, you listen and ask some questions.
she tells you more and then shifts the dialogue back to you.

The one-uppers are clearly admiring of us, so I take it as a compliment and just chuckle to myself. If they are doing that, file it away as information that may come in handy later. Maybe while playing a game of strategy.
The ones who annoy me are those who try to invalidate my experience or observation because they disagree with me, experience of understand it differently ( for whatever reason. ) I don't mind a respectful disagreement or an opposing experience/ perspectives, that makes life interesting - but calling me out as a liar or stupid simply because you disagree with my faith or politics or favorite Beatle . . .that's not honest. It's also weak .

Just a few excerpts here from the video and I know more masturbation techniques than I learned in over 40 years of licentious, worldly living! I'm thinking plenty of those young methotrexate being nicely groomed to get off wearing tightly whities. Truly the first time I heard of that being a reason for briefs over boxers. Now I'm going to wonder about those with preferences for briefs over boxers(every male in my life but eldest son)

Cart Witnessing Is Getting People Baptzed!!!🐑🐑
by minimus inrecently i talked to an elder about this type of witnessing.
i’ve known him for many years and he is a very honest upright man.
he marveled at how many people have become baptized in the last couple of years because of cart witnessing.

Well, in an area with a lot of immigrants. . .I could see it. My family works with a lot of immigrant/refugees (west and midwest) and the congregation gets on family and can soon have 9 new publishers trying to get Americanized and loving the acceptance of the local congregations. The locals appreciate all the new reliable low paid employees (ok, that statement is based on one relative in particular that is an entrepreneur factory since any employees who want to have any financial future quit within 16 mos. and get their own accounts. She's a skinflint.)

And now for something you might be able to hear without repulsion
by TerryWalstrom ini won't give a long preamble other than to say this.
listen and see how you respond.
and now i'm passing it along to get your feedback.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28i3lwxw5xs.

At the very beginning. . .i heard, understood and kind of agreed. But then the whole thing got a bit convoluted. I understood him, but i figure if your faith requires words and concepts foreign to average people, what good is it? Making atheists smirk is not a desirable response for most believers (in anything)

Random Musings of an ex-JW in a boring meeting
by StarTrekAngel in[sorry for the long post].
i have been eagerly waiting to find another opportunity to write here.
i am somewhat done just ranting about the usual stuff that comes out of the watchtower society and its continuous, relentless futile effort to look like or resemble the organization that their alleged god would accept and proclaim as his own.

Hey, having your wife as part of your core group makes the rest of it ok. Learning experience! Also a good reminder that open minded doesn't mean you ignore your gut. Guts are good! We ignore them to our detriment but can at least appreciate the teaching moment and learning experience.

Larry Nasser..... WOW....
by DATA-DOG indo you think the gb are watching the live report??
will they learn from all this?
are they scared shitless as the reality of social media delivers one bitch-slap of truth after another?

Several people around Larry Nasser have resigned. Lawsuits are happening. It's not just about one abuser. He had accomplices. The powerful protected each other. Nasser isn't unique and the Borg isn't too special to avoid the consequences.

The FISA Memo, To Release Or Not To Release
by freemindfade inwas the doj, nsa, and fbi weaponized?
the biggest scandal of this era, or a false alarm by the gop?
i am skeptical what will come of it, however, some very strong reactions and words are coming from its existence and those who read it, also the fight to keep it secret is telling (reminds me of any cult trying to prevent people from reading damaging information).

If this is important and both sides have access, then the fact that it isn't being released makes both parties look like they have something to hide.

Are JWs capable of a genuine discussion?
by stuckinarut2 ini was just pondering whether jws are capable of having a calm, in depth discussion about religious or faith topics?.
i have just finished listening to a great podcast by "dogma debate" (dan) episode 333. this fantastic, in-depth conversation between a theist and an atheist was a masterful example of how a dignified conversation can take place without it resorting to abruptness or even nastiness.. jws on the other hand seem incapable of having such discussion without ending up in the following ways:.
1)they get dogmatic and defensive if a differing view is presented.. 2)if the conversation doesn't go their way, they cut it short saying something like "well, we had better agree to disagree" or the like.. so why the arrogance?
-
JaniceA
No, most wont. but most people who think they are inherently superior to the other because of their belief system shut down others as much as their power or ability allows. The WT disassociates people formally and JWs do informally if they don't approve of like the way a discussion makes them feel about themself. They aren't unique in this.
It happens all the time among non-JWs, religious and irreligious people. They imagine that silencing the other will make all their doubts and confusion go away.it will silence the noise in their head. It doesn't work.
Conversation requires give and take. When one side devalues and dehumanizes the other to maintain their world view, they can't listen and they already know they lost.
By the way, the silencer isn't necessarily wrong in their view, but they fear that it will break their world view to hear an opposing or even contrasting view.
