There are Christians who choose not to celebrate holidays. The thing is that their churches do not stipulate a rule that prevents the entire congregation from doing so.
This is what happened to us at Halloween: We decided not to celebrate. We are new Christians who have been preaching and demonstrating love of neighbor and my daughter picked up on this. We have a ton of candy in the house. My little one decides to open the blinds on the window so he can see the people outside. Some come to the door. My daughter says, "They are little kids, I just want to make them happy." and gives out candy. So love of neighbor won out over our other principles. I don't know what will happen next year, but I just wanted to give you a different view point.
I also know many Christians who do not celebrate Easter. They celebrate Christ Ressurection, but they do not do anything with eggs or bunnies. Funny that as JW I did not celebrate His resurrection but I did buy eggs and bunnies when they went on sale. hmmmm
with "memorial season" just around the corner, i am planning to put together a small brochure (or maybe just a plain-looking document on letter-sized paper) that exposes the embarassing fact that jws still hold their "memorial" every year even though, by their own teachings, they should have had their last one in 1914. i plan to give it to the next elder who stops by to "count his time" during memorial season.
but hopefully, this will happen before they start canvassing my neighborhood since i plan to distribute it to my neighbors as well.. i've just started this morning with the following "quick draft" (but i would appreciate your comments and insight... thanks):.
jehovah's witnesses, why are you still inviting people to "the memorial"?.
What I would like to do is get these distributed at all the local churches so that when JWs show up to invite people to the Memorial, they will get handed an anti-witness nearly every time.
i am now officially by being announced at congregation level that i am no longer one of jehovahs wihtnesses.
that news spread like wild fire and i was dropped by all jw's on facebook, which shows the level of control the borg has in this area.
what is interesting is there was no juducial committee.
Congratulations!
perhaps this is a common topic for newbies on the site, but i have browsed for a while and not seen this exactly answered.. as an active jw who understands the flaws in wts doctrine, but believes in the bible, how do i identify a form of worship that meets all the criterea:.
1) by this all will know you are my disciples if you have love among yourselves (john 13:35).
sure i know that not all jws do this, and that people from other religions or non-religious people do this also, but as an official doctrine jws will not kill one another in war, and in general there is a genuine effort to exercise "agape" love not widely found in the world at large.. 2) preach the good news.
That sounds great. I like the idea of it. My hesitance in believing that it is entirely true is due to the pattern set by the early Christians. Are there any examples of converts who established a relationship with Christ in isolation and then he led them to a group? I can't think of any. The gospel was preached and then as people learned the truth about Christ
Where can we learn the truth about Christ today? How did I learn the gospel and come to Christ?

Open your Bible flamegrilled and read Acts chapter 9. Was this person appointed by the apostles? What did he do in what order? When did he meet with an organization or gain approval from "the governing body" of the time?
I would like answers.

Right off the top of my head: Acts chapter 9 and chapter 10

Alfred, I might use your tract this memorial season. :) Look at this scripture!
so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. Hebrews 9:28
It is pretty clear to me that there is no "appearing in 1914" and again in the future.

As for Hebrews 10:25 I suggest that you read the scripture and pray for understanding. Let go of any pre-conceived ideas of what the scripture means. I personally disagree with both you and N. Drew.
I would also like to point out that Job, Moses, and Paul were not parts of an organization. Neither was Cornelius or the Ethiopian. Phillip led him to Christ in a very short time and then was whisked away. He didn't need more teaching.

Flamegrilled, the problem is your order of things. First, one must go to Christ. Then Christ will lead you to the group of people he wants you with.
John 5: 39 “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; 40 and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.
The Lord is alive. He leads us with His Spirit. Once you have the Spirit to guide you these other things are much easier to answer.
Romans 8:14 because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
