In a lighter vein, here's a joke I remember from early on: Three men walked down a street. A wind came up and blew the one man's hat away. A dog grabbed the hat and chewed it up. The second man laughed. The third man, a staunch fellow, reprimanded him: Your attitude, I don't like it. The second man answered jovially: It's not my 'at he chewed, it's his 'at he chewed.

Bible Writers not just ignorant "goat herders"
by applehippie inreally, the bible was written by nothin' but goat herders?
i don't post much but this does irk me.
yes a few may have been shepherds or fisherman, but a fair amount were far more educated and were professionals in their fields of occupation.

Cofty, a lot of those laws were regulatory, rather than freshly instituted. Many of those practices did exist but had to be regulated, e.g., slavery.
Think of how far we have come in the medical field. But only about 1860 did Dr. Semmelweis introduce hand washing to decrease mortality rates. And here’s a few gems of "knowledge" from Encyclopaedia Britannica (1768):
US state of California was spelt with two L's and is described as “a large country of the West Indies. Unknown whether it is an island or a peninsula”.
Electricity was advised for curing some illnesses, including deafness and toothache in children.
The solar system was described as having six planets; Uranus and Neptune had yet to be discovered!
Flying dragons were reportedly to be found in Africa, the East Indies and America.
Homo sapiens were sub divided into five varieties: the American, the European, the Asiatic, the African and the monstrous.

Steve2, here we are in Cantleave's teritory. Survival of the fittest. Either I slaughter you or you slaughter me. View it within context. If you struggle to do that, read Asterix and the Black Gold. That will put you in the picture in cartoon form.
Phizzy, for one, how did the writer of Job know about the fire underneath the earth? Quite exceptional for a goatherder! Let's change tack. Let's look at the piramids. No-one can explain how they were built. Not bad for a primitive people. Language as we know it, originated with these people. They were not so stupid as many think.

Phizzy, the Bible is not a scientific textbook or history book and has never claimed to be so.

Comatose, be thankful for those warmongering pillagers and rapists of days gone by. Without them and their contribution, we might not have been here. At least we know many of them could read and write. Actually they invented alphabetical writing, grammar, and linguistics. Here's a few of their ramblings:
He is stretching out the north over the empty place, Hanging the earth upon nothing; (Job 26:7 NWT)
He has described a circle upon the face of the waters, To where light ends in darkness. (Job 26:10 NWT)
As for the earth, out of it food goes forth; But underneath it, it has been upturned as if by fire. (Job 28:5 NWT)
All the winter torrents are going forth to the sea, yet the sea itself is not full. To the place where the winter torrents are going forth, there they are returning so as to go forth. (Ecc 1:7 NWT)
Not bad for a lot of ignoramuses and goatherders.

Yes, interesting that the stuff of goatherders is studied at colleges and universities. Hundreds and thousands of books and articles are written on a variety of subjects, connected to what they have written. Shows you how ignorant man is.

If God prefers the hypocritical GB and their unrighteousness above me, then I deserve to die. Just think, living forever under their expert guidance. No, rather die here and now. But somehow I think they are reaching out for that pie in the sky. Hopefully they'll get some egg on their faces.

Recently, I have noticed that there are two words, rather than verses, that JWs do not like: 1) Banner, flag, ensign; 2) Spirit in connection with a human.
1) The Hebrew word for “banner” or “flag” they translate as “three-tribe division,” which is rather unique. I really don’t know where they got that from. Why this irregular paraphrase? Oh yes, because they believe flags are evil and from the Devil, reasoning that the Israelites would never have flags or banners.
E.g., And the sons of Israel must encamp each with reference to his camp, and each man by his [three-tribe] division by their armies. (Num 1:52 NWT)
How was the three-tribe division indicated? By banner or flag, of course.
2) Spirit is an interesting one. The Biblical references do not agree with their interpretation of “spirit” so they change the wording, paraphrasing it so that it agrees with their interpretation.
E.g., Then the dust returns to the earth just as it happened to be and the spirit itself returns to the [true] God who gave it (Ecc 12:7 NWT).
This is the Biblical explanation of what happens when you die. JWs insist this is the life force or breath that dissipates, but the Scriptures say differently.
Again Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and ceased to breathe [Footnote: “yielded up his breath”] (Mat 27:50 NWT1960).
Again Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and yielded up [his] spirit (Mat 27:50 NWT1984). The were critizised for this one and had to change it.
22 But YOU have approached a Mount Zion and a city of [the] living God, heavenly Jerusalem, and myriads of angels,
23 in general assembly, and the congregation of the firstborn who have been enrolled in the heavens, and God the Judge of all, and the spiritual lives of righteous ones who have been made perfect, [Footnote: Literally “(the) spirits”] (Heb 12:22-23 NWT).
6 And he said to me, These words are faithful and true; yes, Jehovah the God of the inspired expressions [lit. “the spirits”] of the prophets sent his angel forth to show his slaves the things that must shortly take place (Rev 22:6 NWT).
JWs insist the NWT is a LITERAL translation. Why all the paraphrase? Because it clashes with their doctrines.

Thanks Barry, I didn't know that. That's probably where Russel got his ideas from, like many others.
