im relatively new to the board, but i wanted other people's opinions.. growing up in "the organization" i pretty much blindly adhered to all instruction as a teenager.. as i got a little older, as most here im sure, i began to see how some practices were imposed on the flock without any biblical backing.. one that bugged the living hell out of me was the restriction of being allowed to grow facial hair.. i was literally removed from carrying the mics and reading at bookstudy because my sideburns were too long and i wanted to grow a goatee, hence i often showed up with stubble.
i was taken to the back room and told i was being "too worldly.
" when i questioned the elders why it was unallowed by the society and that i wanted scriptural evidence and backing for their imposed regulations, i was scoffed at and told i should do as i am told.. i told them where they could stick their "priviledges" .
I was told my hair was getting too long on several occasions.
So I went through it scripturally, pointing out thatthe Society's publications say that the scriptures should be interpretec as "too long for your area/generation".
Who was right, I don't know in the end, but I remember becoming so pissed off with one dickhead for his comments that I let it grow long enough he wouldn't work with me on the ministry.
I think that was long enough for the fringe to reach my eyebrows :P

a friend from back home wrote me a letter.
they just had the co visit.
she asked him about the un thing.
"He knew nothing about it so it couldn't possibly be true. The WTS would keep him informed he was sure, of any such goings on."
Self important bastard
"Yes, brother, the GB ALWAYS ask me if what they're about to do is okay."

i understand it but at the same time i dont understand it because i was born and raised a jw so i was always in their mindset.
but how does someone who comes from the world and joins the org justify going against every natural instict they have?
i mean its just unnatural to turn against your own flesh and blood.
Personally, I liked the "I'm an idiot" answer best so far...

about a year or so ago i answered the door to find a man and a woman.
going door to door, the man(a white from the bahamas who was visiting these parts)i mentioned that(if i remember correctly!
)that i believed .
What'd it say?
"Did you know that there is this thing called SCIENCE that relies upon OBSERVATION and EVIDENCE rather than simply making things up? Yes! And you too can be a part of this SCIENCE by simply writing to us at Watchtower.org and sending in your cheques (on a purely oluntary basis of course, but we recommend two hundred dollars each)"?

the governing body... victims of the misinformation that has gone back many, many years?
they might not be as entirely evil as many of you have pointed out.
even hitler believed the misinformation that he so strongly promoted, an anti-semitism that stretched back centuries.
"Even Hitler believed the misinformation that he so strongly promoted"
Depends upon whose theories you listen to...
And, to be fair, I was talking to a friend who has gone to the New York Bethel. Her report of what went on there included the information "One of the members of the Governing Body has a miniature golf course in his office". I hear this as being greedy and disgusting in a charity where the money is meant to be distributed fairly yet the main work force is given little more than wat is necessary to live in our culture.

what is evil?.
who defines what is truly evil?.
if someone lived a trillion x longer than you, and had a billion x more reasoning ability would he come to the same conclusions as you?.
Farkel,
The fact that you COULD have used other terms doesn't mean you DID.
If we were to start accepting what people meant rather than what they said, then this discussion would probably have ended a long time ago.
Either way, I think we've debated this point long enough for my liking, it's not got anywhere farther forward than "There is a definition for evil, we don't know what it is but we can hazard guesses".
So I'll bow out.
