there is a practice among jws of applying restrictions to individual members.
it forms part of the judicial process and, although having no scriptural basis, is applied automatically to erring ones who are judged to be repentant.. so, for a period of time, usually up to 12 months, the individual is not allowed to share in commenting at meetings, offering public prayer, appearing on the platform in congregation meetings, or in serving as an auxiliary pioneer.. as with any man-made law, difficulties arise from this practice.
although no announcement has been made to the congregation, individual congregation members can have their curiosity aroused.. for example, take the real-life situation where a sole parent has been placed on restrictions by a judicial committee.
English,
I can remember those 'good old days' when we an 'on probation' class. Ah, those were the days!
An interesting comment on re-instatement is found in the October 1, 1998 isuue of The Watchtower. On page 17, paragraph 16 it states of those who are reinstated to the congregation: "Like the prodigal's father, jehovah treats with dignity those who do return, accepting them back as full-fledged members of the family."
At the time of this Watchtower, I asked several elders and C.O. to comment on that. Notice it said that re-instated ones are 'full-fledged' members. I asked how could they be 'full-fledged' when they are on restrictions? Not one elder/C.O. could answer the question. The best I got was that if we wait on Jehovah, it appears as though there is going to be a change in procedure! Well, that was nearly 3 years ago, so I guess the waiting is over!
I guess it's a demonstartion of the truism that the more rules man makes, the more become necessary. Just ask the Pharisees!
Cheers,
ozzie

I agree I-Ching that it's Pharisaical in application, but I don't think even they hade developed the regulation of restrictions!

There is a practice among JWs of applying restrictions to individual members. It forms part of the judicial process and, although having no scriptural basis, is applied automatically to erring ones who are judged to be repentant.
So, for a period of time, usually up to 12 months, the individual is not allowed to share in commenting at meetings, offering public prayer, appearing on the platform in congregation meetings, or in ‘serving’ as an Auxiliary Pioneer.
As with any man-made law, difficulties arise from this practice. Although no announcement has been made to the congregation, individual congregation members can have their curiosity aroused.
For example, take the real-life situation where a sole parent has been placed ‘on restrictions’ by a judicial committee. Whilst attending the group book study, others in the group begin to wonder why the restricted person is not commenting. After all, previously, he/she was in the custom of having a full share but now, even in a small group of no more than 15, he/she does not speak at all. The parent’s child also raises questions. What follows on from this is a problem of lack of confidentiality. Is this really what a “loving organisation” would do?
Another area of restrictions is in the area of a disfellowshipped person attending meetings in the Kingdom Hall.
A DF person is not entitled to receive a copy of ‘Kingdom Ministry’. If there is a believing spouse, they cannot share the KM, for that would be fellowshipping spiritually on the part of the JW spouse! So the DF person is expected to attend the Service Meetings (as a sign of repentance) yet not be able to follow the meeting outline in the Kingdom Ministry, nor be able, if they wished, to prepare for the meeting.
Elders reading this may like to examine their own hearts over restrictions for they must have taken part in applying these regulations. Background information is found in “Pay Attention to Yourselves and to All the Flock”(ks91) page 130, and “Our Kingdom Ministry” February 1987 page 8.
Does it make sense? Is it scriptural? Is it loving? Some elders are troubled by these things but comply out of loyalty. But to what or whom? Is the question. To the organisation or to Jehovah God?
Ozzie
well, which is it guys?.
are you filled with anger at the wbts or just sad that things aren't what you though they were?.
i'm very sad that my parents won't talk with my sister (da'd) or my brother (df'd) even though the society's own web-site says that such actions do not sever family ties.
LDH: I think it's both (but not at the same time!)
Some days I feel an overwhelming sadness. Sad for my family and relatives; and for our friends. All thought it was right and did their utmost 'for Jehovah'.
On other days I feel exceedingly angry, specifically at the authority of the elder class. I think of how I share in their sins. I feel much as described by Paul when he wrote: "Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Of these I am foremost."(1 Tim 1:15)
At other times however I feel happy, almost elated, to know that Christ forgives, or as the Kingdom song expressed it "Jehovah forgives in a large way".

we hopefully all agree it is wrong to reject an entire race because we have found one of its member to be flawed, or to reject an entire concept an the basis of finding a flaw in its argument.
would not fair people look for a way to accept the good in the concept, modify the flawed portion and rejoice in what was gained from the refined concept?
it would also be wrong, as the wt does, to reject an entire institution because some of its precepts are flawed.
G'day aChristian,
Just wanted to thank you for such a fine, well-thought out post above.
God bless,

G'day again guys,
jst2laws: just a P.S. to my earlier post. On this week's Service Meeting in our congregation, the elder delivering the part "Make Good Use of the 2001 Yearbook" when discussing the persecution of our brothers in one country said: "Only Jehovah's people could survive". Now is that true? Doesn't investigation reveal that many Christians around the world in recent times are being persecuted, some even martyred for their belief in Christ. So again we need to ask of such a statement at the meeting: Is it true? How do we know? Have we investigated for ourselves?
This same elder, when discussing the situation in another land, stated: "Not one of Jehovah's Witnesses died, showing that Jehovah was backing them". Really? What of the examples of Witnesses being killed for their faith that are recorded in the Society's publications.
So often meeting parts are riddled with lies and distortions. Now you might say that we get spiritually fed at the meetings, but I ask, What type of diet is it that includes lies and distortions?

jst2laws,
You said: "Who else is teaching so many of the basic truths World Wide?"
So often at the meetings we hear statements like this. (Yes, I still attend and am in 'good standing') Can I ask, How do you know this? Is it simply because we have heard this repeatedly at the meetings/assemblies or read it in the publications? Again I ask, how do you know? Have you investigated for yourself? I did and I was shocked.
Would you be prepared to check it out for yourself?
Ozzie (of the checkout chicks class)
the april issue of 'kingdom ministry' contains advice on what to do when you get new neighbours.. witnesses are told to identify themselves as jehovah's witnesses.
suggestions on how to go about this are given.. 1. call on them in field service.. 2.
"when you...see them working in their yard.
Sorry larc,
I'm getting old, should have addressed to you, not Prisca. Sorry Prisca.
