Patio,
The Unauthorised Version truth and fiction in the bible written by Robin Lane Fox. He is a historian who claims that he "believes the bible but not in god." He also wrote Pagans and Christians which I think I remember the WBTS quoting from !
gooooo figure.
I had to get a copy of it because I found myself wanting to refer to either the book itself or the refernces and sources Fox documented. If you get a chance get it at the library.

Yah'll are bringing tears to my eyes. A few of my friends have read this book but having xjws views are this side of heaven.
Do you remember The Red Tent explanation for Jacob(Israel) broken hip and beat up condition. Not a wrestling with divinty. A fraternal bout of comeupence! Good grief I loved it...Esau beat him up! I always wondered why the bible never told about any altercations between the reunited brothers, didn't we all know that Esau wasn't going to forget the sneaky Jacob (and mother Rebecca)?
I too agree about Leah's character. As jws we kinda took Leah as the ugly older sister. I prefer her as the wiser loving older sister. And how wonderful to see the women's own society (and let's face it)civilization.
Has anyone read the Unauthorized Version?
Any recomendations?

A few weeks ago I read The Red Tent. The story of Dinah, not as told in the Bible. As we xdubs know the representation of women in the Bible is lacking. Jael has always been a favorite of mine and also that free love chick in Song of Solomon.
So, The Red Tent is about Leah and Rachel and Jacob. The story takes on an archeological bent, because there would be no other way to describe the religion of those women or their lives by just referencing the Bible.Okay...we won't ever know the REAL story of Dinah. But this is well researched and a terrific read. The author puts her own twist on the work arrangements and marriages according to well documented customs of the time. And of course the red tent itself establishes the female preservation of cultural rites of passage.
The author usually writes about modern day Judaism. With this book she shows her terrific talent for research.
If you've read this book I'd like to know what you thought about it.

CourtTV - A JW Case
by Mister Biggs inlast night (9:30pm est), courttv did a story of a woman who left home when she was a teenager.. she got involved with drugs and prostitution.. she soon gave birth to a child.. she stopped using drugs and quit being a prostitute and took up a job as a waitress.. she now gave birth to a son.. fast forward six years.... she began studying with jehovah's witnesses.. she was applying for something (maybe welfare, i'm not sure.
i ran to use the bathroom during the commercials and when i came back out the narrator had already said what she was trying to apply for).. the narrator said that whatever she was applying for required that she disclose who the father is and explain why she is not collecting child support.. the father of her son was a married police officer who had an established family and a distinguished career.. she consulted the elders as to what she should do.
they told her that she needs to be honest and that she shouldn't lie on the application.. so, she set up a meeting with the baby's daddy (the cop).

You are kidding right? Let's see should the father pay child support...you bet. Should the mother place herself in the dangerous situation...you know that answer. Ok so she made some wrong decisions. Getting involved with this creep who was already married was the worst. Does that mean she deserved to die? Brutally murdered because no one chose to recognize the danger she spoke of was real...not just some female hysteria.
Or maybe , rather than blame the killer we should just say that women who excercize bad judgement deserve to die violent deaths?
Are the jws 100% to blame? However, The elders were advertising themselves as spiritual men who knew how to care for the flock because they were chosen by the annointed slave to represent christs bride blah blah blah. Any minister or priest should be held accountable for not giving the council ...be cautious as serpents yet innocent as doves... I can hear it now..."maybe if you reason with him that ruining his family isn't as bad as hiding the truth of his parenting your kid." Yeah right. If a psychiatrist neglected to warn a patient that certain behavior may be deadly, you could sue. If the elders advise you only on this tell the truth bullshit... well at least they were right about one thing..it could be life threatening.
Hey, do you think they'll look after the orphan???

This all stinks og elder-care. Gosh I remember when I tried to get help for a friend who had been jumped on by an elder in bed. Well, what the elders wanted to talk about was the elder's wife's alcoholic problem! GoodGrief [>:(] -

I saw this show too. I think she had been raised a dub "fell away" and the minister said she was coming back and sincerly wanted to do what was right. I thought that guy was an elder except the background was of a pulpit w/a cross...unless the tv producers just used what they considered to be an appropriate back drop???

June 1st WT...The WTS's Fixation with Death
by ISP inthe june 1st wt has the cover article should you be afraid of death?
on the first page it sets the scene as to how death casts a shadow over us.
it then seemingly gloats over how people in the world are fixated by death.

Dear Death,
You fascinate me. I can't stop thinking about your unknowable ways and place. I especially appreciate your egalitarian constitution... every living thing eventually succombs to your charm. You play no favorites. We are all irresistably drawn to you..inch by inch; moment by moment...until WHAM. and apparently as the dead we become fascinating to our live bretheren. Of course we are all interested in the future and everyones future includes death. Good grief, dearest Death. When Dickenson wrote "I kindly stopped for death, because he could not stop for me" Did she mean that you were too busy? Well it's no wonder all of that facsinating death work you do everyday! Disturbing material in May 15, 2002 Watchtower
by spender inin the questions from readers section, the question was: "would it be advisable for a true christian to attend a funeral or a wedding in a church?".
to analyze this wonderful piece, i'm going to use their words, and translate them into real english.. "being in a group where everyone else is engaging in a false religious act, a christian may find it difficult to resist the pressure to join in.
how unwise to expose oneself to such pressure!".

My mother's funeral was in a Catholic church. I had been raised Catholic so nothing seemed weird or anything to me. However, at the rosary before the funeral my oldest brother was upset because I wouldn't make the sign -of -the -cross. When I flew back to my home after the funeral a sister in the cong. asked if I was ok. I figured she meant because my mom had died... nope... didn't the experience of attending a Catholic mass effect me? That hurt.
When I attended a nephews wedding in a Methodist church (and took lots of photos) a young MS asked what I thought of all those flags at the altar?(he referred to the American flag) And didn't I feel out of place?
Jeez Looezz... What gives these folks the idea that it's okay to question another persons actions. Thw WBTS promotes spying and conniving. They must be thinkging "Let's twist a person until they can't make a decision for themselves anymore. "

Or maybe would be glad to know about other ex-jws. Anyway, I knew the Sissecks, Johnsons,Truesdales, Taggs, and a bunch more. Only one person from there had asked me to write to her granddaughter concerning child abuse (which had been going on in that congregation). Amazing how everyone knew but ignored the situation... and now a generation of confused and self loathing young women. Good grief, how long will those children continue to suffer abuse?

Did anyone see the Discovery Channel special last?
by crownboy ini saw it at my cousin's house last night, it was very interesting.
it traced the lineage of man back to the "real eve", who lived somewhere in africa about 150,000 years ago.
they were able to make this determination by reading the "mitocondrial dna" of humans; looking for mutations, etc.

Panda
The show title was "The Real Eve". Wonderfully informative. The kind of program that sends me to the library or bookstore. One of the scientists (I think the first female scientist on the show) did clear up the question of whether or not the scientific community was actually talking about not one person but one shared mitochondrial dna sequence. I think the explanation went something like this; if you take a certain group of people in a village, over time all the people will share a surname. So it's not one person but a group with that surname or dna. "Eve" was several "Eve's" who became millions over about 80,000 years. Can you tell I liked this program? The positive changes in the "out of africa eve's" dna only occurred over aabout 20,000 years for each difference(thank you Darwin for explaining natural selection)Which accounts for the obvious change in pigment and stature.
Another amazing point was that while the great apes are only 1% dna different from modern humans...our cousins the Neanderthals were even closer genetically...cool huh? My very very favorite detail which was mentioned more than once was... the original Eve's were young ,black ,and big hipped!!!!!mmm---hmmm
10 years ago I would never have said these things publically, phew!!!It's so good to be out of the ORG.(:D)Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then his is not omnipotence. Is he able but not willing? Then whence cometh evil. Is he neither able nor willing? The why call him god? -Epicurius
