  scorsese's new film is pretty spectacular.

  Big Tex, Yeah it was bloody. Especially that riot which the gov't used overkill to quash. But those fights between fire clubs went on for decades. Imagine, "my house is burning", but the firemen are too busy fighting one another. Sheeesh.

  I didn't know that about the Sting. That was my professors favorite movie.

  The Italians came mostly after the Civil war closer to the turn of the century. 5 points was no longer the same wood and brick buildings it had been. Did you know that the Gangs of NewYork was a book, a real primary source. I don't know if it's in reprint because of the movie, do you know? Panda

  LOL run don't walk, It might not apply to Texas either. Unless we're talking about the days of the dinosaurs? Did the dinos keep records ...oh wait their writing turned to oil yes of course and the oil lubricated much of Canada and the US (except for Calif ) so Jehovah was saving us eons ago from his own prophecies. So then, dinos were prophets of the first kind!

  Big Tex, I've read Alienist and Angel of Dark. The first was great second not so good. The author also wrote a terrific history about an American soldier in China who helped the Chinese and became a hero ... monument and all.

  The Gangs of NewYork is based on fact. The location, 5-points was a real place. A real slum. Except for the DeCaprio character many of the characters were historic, especially Mr.Tweed (wish they'd had more about him but you got the point), It was the Civil War and the conscription was (draft) new . The War history contains loads of info on the Irish battalions. I mean hey these guys often had never shot a rifle! They were fodder for the southern army. Anyway, even the names of the gangs were the real names, although by the civil war the Daed Rabbits were pretty much gone. Most of the 5 points story happened before the Civil war. This just shows that my crime in America class really paid off!!! I can understand a movie!!!

  Prayer is a panacea. A bandaid to get your mind onto the track of positive actions. That's what I've been told. And for thousands of years the magic of nature has prompted prayers and appreciation. However, praying to a nonexistent entity won't help. Honest. And think of who you are praying to; a god who enjoys the smell of burning flesh --- wait a second --- in Texas we call that a BBQ --- YUM

  Where Did God Create Man? Did Man Originate In Africa?

  i recently saw 'the journey of man: a genetic odyssey' on public tv.

  spencer wells, a geneticist has been able to prove that all human races originated in africa.

  along with this documentary, he has published several scientific papers and a book on this subject.

  Yeah I saw that program. But the theory that humans evolved out of Africa is not new. Because Africa is such a stable continent primates had the time to become human. And our closest great ape cousins are still there hopefully reminding us of who and what we really are, animals. And the amazing finds both previously and today are almost right on the surface. How fantastic to see tv shows lawding the out of Africa evolution instead of trying to give equal time to some nonsense on creation(which is psuedo science).

  I remember that Evolution or Creation book. Every psuedo scientific "proof" in that book is easily tossed. The problem though is getting the borg to even consider that WTS has printed falsehoods. Today people believe in Creation because it's too upsetting to consider being just like every other living creature.

  Jane Goodall once said that (I paraphrase) now that we understand our close relationship to Chimpanzees it's time to consider how we treat them and their habitats. She asked how would our lives be if we were stuck in metal cages and experimented on our whole lives?

  Evolution is such an exciting field of study. Many universities have web sites devouted to the science of evolution. I get loads of info that way.

  Isn't this child abuse? I remember a friend whose little boy was making like a monster and saying"[ he's] attacking and will make your blood gush out because he had claws and big teeth." Well my friend went ballistic, "where did you see that? I'll bet that babysitter showed you a movie, did she?" His reply as his Mom berated him and grabbed his arm," No Mom it was the Kingdom Hall Book" --- It was the Revelation Climax book which had been new at the time.

  Thanks for posting that picture. Those of us who've been gone a long time haven't seen what passes for Bible study literature. I think the WTS is getting close to insanely obvious claims which will show more and more that WTS is a cult group.

  I just saw this movie last week on pay per view. I was amazed that Scorcese could do it, but he did. Now I wish I'd seen this on the big screen... and what about Daniel Day Lewis! My god the actor was phenomenal. His character was perfectly seemless. Never a slip always walking talking and even moving his head and hands in character...

  In college I took a course on crime in America. We spent lots of time on the 19th century. And many of the characters in this story were real. Mr.Tweed, the fire house unit fighting, Lewis' character. And even the names of the Irish and nativist gangs. The Dead Rabbits were actually a bastardization of the gaelic words which sounded like dead rabbits.

  Anyway since this thread was started eons ago I hope everyone will see it again..wonderful film.

  curious as to your thoughts.

  i think it is a strong contender for "best movie", "best actor" (tom hanks) and "best supporting actor" (paul newman).. this is the best movie i have seen this year.

  Big Tex was Sullivan really off guard.. I don't know if he could let his guard down, not really? And Jude Law was fantastic! Gosh that movie was excellent. Great continuity etc. I grew up in one of those dark houses. Especially the upstairs hallway. I guess that's why we had so many lamps. The ending was terrific in that really what else could have happened to Sullivan. I mean he did kill people and Jude Law killed people and Paul Newman killed people. So what else could happen? They had to die violently, it was their kharma.

  This was a great film.

  Well Well Well... this just goes to show how we of the wealthy nations can condemn something as good for us as milk.. Please friends, if you check it out , in many 3rd world countries milk for children is an excellent way for them to get necessary food into their bodies. I know some claim that we don't get all of the protein or calcium from milk, but that is not provable. In China parents have been giving milk to their kids for about 20 some years now and guess what. Chinese children are stronger, taller, and have better teeth than their parents. Milk and meat are the main ingredients for stronger kids throughout China. Quite a different approach than the Soviet use of steroids to make bigger stronger kids. As for me, I can't eat seafood but I can drink milk...go figure. And soy milk and tofu are great. So is yoghurt, and cheese.

  Actually pasturizing milk should kill bacteria, or why pasturize?

  Stephanie and Brandon, You are bright lights in the sky of parents. How wonderful to consider your children in your decision. You really did it!! Gosh I'm proud of you both for the way you bothered to explain to the kids, you let them reason along with you. How wonderful. I bet you were not ever typical jjw parents. No beatings with wooden spoons or holding your hand over your babies moths to shush them up. No arm twisiting or violent beatings. Nope, your kids were treated like children with loving parents. All kids should be so lucky.

  One caution, beware the grandparents. Although with your kids understanding they might just explain the problems with liars in the WTS..

  Congrats !!!!
