I have to ask how most of you even have energy to debate or even talk about this.
To each his own, but for me this really does matter, also I find the dicussions very interesting. Being raised a JW it is clear that wierd religious ideas sadly still continue to dupe so many even in this scientific age. The problem is this thinking is still a threat, and seeps into our lawmaking process and affects our rights and future potential as a species. Even now, we have this ridiculous Tea Party trying to bring us back to the 1700s and bring elements of their special brand of theocracy into our government. This thinking is something that needs to exposed and discussed in an open way like this so that people can see it for what it is and make better decisions.

Jesus' Teachings - Helpful or Harmful?

how do we measure if a particular philosophy is helpful or harmful?.
i am going to use the "universal morals" listed here.

Some of the things Jesus said in the bible are practical and helpful advice to everyday living, however there are many things stated and unstated that are quite damaging to peoples lives here are a few examples.
- Matt 6:33 as JW's we witnessed first hand how damaging this core teaching is. Never getting an education, or preparing for retirement is never going to end well for anyone who follows Jesus.
- Jesus cult statement and ultimatam that he came to divide families, giving license for family to be shunned or treated as second priority.
- The command to give god your best and endlessly preach forever (isn't 2,000 years enough already?).
- The unspecificity and vagueness in many of his statements and explanations that lead to so much doubt and confusion. This is well evidenced by the thousands of sects of Christianity out there.

Why did Jesus not abide by his own teaching on the 26th December 2004?
Here is a far out one.
Maybe he couldn't. Remember the account in the book of Daniel where the angel Gabriel was blocked by the demon Prince of Persia, and needed the archangel to intercede. Perhaps all of the demons are so powerful now, that they put up an insurmountable obstacle for J & J (like those chariots of iron in the bronze age).
I thought there was already a point for god was unable to, but I didn't see it in the most updated list. Perhaps that falls under #20 the retreat to deism. Rebuttal: then why call him God, if his creation is more powerful than him?

Cofty, it seems like you're falling into an unsustainable trap of having to re-hash points that have previously been made multiple times already on this thread to accomodate every newcomer who hasn't bothered to actually read what's already been written.
The answers offered by those in favor of theism, have so far not provided a satisfying answer to your question. For me, this question matters. Why? What right does anyones super diety have to make demands of people, and tell them what true morality, justice and love is, when it just sits back and watches this horrendous affair and many others like it for the past 200,000 years as man has evolved and suffered, and painstakingly had to figure everything out on their own anyways?

One thing is for certain, doing the bare minimum of at least warning those people would have resulted in zero physical side effects on the earth; yet, your all-powerful, all-knowing, all-loving god who can fortell events, didn't even have the basic neighborly decency to do that. Why?
