We sure do need more people like Carl Sagan.

The Path to FREEDOM
by SweetBabyCheezits ini realize i peddle carl sagan like christians peddle jesus but i think every one of us who has survived the watchtower, regardless of our current beliefs, should be able to appreciate this.
in the path to freedom (chapter from one of his books), sagan was discussing frederick (bailey) douglass's life in the early 19th century and his quest for literal freedom.
see if anything here sounds familiar:.

I don't think 3/5 of the worlds population has any clue about what you just mentioned. Does God just not love them as much? Does he favor one nation over another?

Sure its unproven. So?
If God wants people to do things his way, wouldn't having some proof really be the best start to that reality in this scientific age?

Religion and rules and doctrines and fear of punishment, etc... that is not freedom, and we should break free and come out of 'her'. I agree with you there.
I'm happy we can at least agree on that, unfortunately many other Christians and Muslims don't share that view. They stick to the texts.
Would you regard the bible as prison that should be broken free from too? If so what rules should be followed and where can they reliably be found for ALL and ensure they have access to it? Do you think that it's a reasonable responsibility that the designer provide that? If so why hasn't he yet?

He did confirmed it in the past. Didn't seem to have changed anything.
Unproven.

I find it crazy that i'm going to say this... but the WTS interpretation about God destroying things and starting over and protecting those who remain loyal makes much more sense, then this idea that this world and governments will remain while children starve while he only talks to a few and uses them to fix the world; it doesn't add up, and actually makes God look worse any way you look at it. That would mean dbags like Goerge Bush were actually doing Gods will. Think about it.

What good would it do if only some people knew that an authority (e.g. police) was really there? Not only would it be stupid it would make others feel excluded and somehow diminished. It is illogical that a God who is supposed to personify love would do things that way. Yet that is what many of the Christians on this forum submit that he does albeit in a very roundaboout way. How can any thinking and rational person accept such utter nonsense?

I don't think he should prevent it all just like the teacher of the class does not prevent all verbal bullying. I think if he really is there he has a responsiblity to confirm he is there, and that he is interested. This would not solve all of the problems but would at least hopefully take care of some big ones. And him being all knowing he should know what needs to be done to find that good balance.
Human children always resent fathers that were never there why should it be any different with God? Since he hasn't shown himself in 2,000 if you believe in that, then maybe it's time to stop worrying about what the hell he thinks and be free and advance freedom.

Some of the earlier comments between TEC and NC made me think of classroom of unruly kids, that are out of control before the teacher shows up. Once the figure of authority makes it know that he is there the students generally behave. If God cared about making it so that wickedness did not happen on the earth he would logically make ALL mankind know that he is there, which would really help the jackasses to think twice. But does he do that? Not that I can tell.
Aren't we supposed to be made in his image? So if our imperfect sense of justice can see how aweful it is for starving baby to be eaten by a vulture is beyond f@cked up than why can't God?
Therefore, if YOU, although being wicked, know how to give good gifts to YOUR children, how much more so will the Father in heaven give holy spirit to those asking him!” - Luke 11:13
Where is his good gift to the starving childs parents that begged God for help them have a meal? I cannot accept that God is allowing this to happen for a good reason other than his pride to win a bet.

Are exJW's not entitled to quote or interpret scriptures in minds of Christians that were never JW's?
by tootired2care inthis is one that i've been struggling with since i started hanging out here.
when you get on a thread and quote a scripture with a comment to make a point, the believers who have never been jw's often knee jerk reaction jump all over it, and in essensce say that you cannot understand the passage because you are not a believer like them.. it's as if they are saying what is written and what you have learned about certain passages are automatically wrong just because you were taught from a jw perspective, or that you lack basic reading comprehension.
i agree many of the jw teachings are off, but i can certainly respect more of their interpretations of scriptures than i can of other christian denominations.

I agree many of the JW teachings are off, but I can certainly respect more of their interpretations of scriptures than I can of other Christian denominations. I say this because I find it highly unacceptable in a discussion when someone says - "no it's not what is written because the lord told me so", or "it can't be that because it has a deeper meaning" or it's a mystery. I mean what kind of arguments are those? Facts and logic are completely disregarded.
One thing being on this board has made me realize is that I actually have a much higher degree of respect for JW's, than I do for those Christian believers that never were; whom arrogantly think they have interpretation trademarked, and use this forum to proselytize.
Is this a justifiable position for non exJW Christians? What are your thoughts on this?
