"selfish" wasn't really the word I was looking for and it really doesn't convey my thoughts regarding people that hope those that leave return here. It was a poor choice.

I guess my comments more accurately reflect my own frustrations with my desire to move on from places like this and my own failure to do so. At times I get to thinking about what seems so futile and I just say things.

People come and go here and it is nice sometimes when persons who have made an impression cross your mind and someone lets us know how they are doing.

Sometimes I wonder if it is selfish to hope people return when so many of us desire to leave this place. I am somewhat glad he never left because of people but am sad that it was due to health reasons. I hope things work themselves out fine.

Are We Getting Used To Terrorism?

it is so easy to underestimate the enemy.every day in every part of the world, we are affected by terrorism.especially after 9-11, we were more aware and vigilant of the possible dangers that we might encounter.

now, the newest threat could be snipers.

imagine if suddenly , in every state or country, a sniper slyly attacked the innocent.

If you mean "we" as in "America", then yes, it is a mistake to carry on as normal. It is time to make some changes and if you don't agree, then it is time to insist strongly. Why should you pay for the mistakes of government policy if you don't agree with it?

You have a greater chance of dying in a car accident. Until the American government looks inward and changes itself, getting used to terrorism is about the best thing a person can do. Living in fear is exactly what they'd like.

I hope I don't sound too insensitive. But terrorism is the flavour of the hour and it is easy to forget the things that are really important in your life. Why worry about what *could* happen at the expense of what is truly relavent to us and those close to us?

Ewanchuk v. Ewanchuk: JW grandparents' rights case

earlier this month, the supreme court of the northwest territories rendered judgement on this case, involving grandparents rights of access to their grandchildren and their right to expose the grandchildren to their religion.

a second is that he views their exposure to his religious practices as something that is healthy for them.

What confuses me is that we seem to be a crowd that wants to have our cake and eat it too. How can we possibly support what is contained in this thread and what is contained in the thread here:

If we want the right to protect our children from being influenced by JW grandparents and we want to set the terms for any visits, then we can't be suing JW parents for essentially doing the same thing.

IMO these matters just do not belong in courts. You cannot legislate relationships with people. Until jw's and exjw's can find some degree of tolerance for each other and their different beliefs and until they realize that children can and should have relationships with their parents and grandparents without religion being such a devisive factor, children will continue to be the losers.

We see things the way we want to see them

the other night i was at my in-laws house for dinner.

they are both jehovah's witnesses and try every now and then to plant some thoughts in our heads to get us concerned.

this night was no exception, with small words and phrases popping up through the evening.

I just wanted to say that I've enjoyed reading your posts lately. This one reminded me of something my mother asked me after I had told her I was concerned over things regarding this religion. She asked with all honesty "who else has a faithful and discreet slave?" and I just couldn't believe the sheer desperation for reasons to believe.

I think few people really let the facts and evidence lead them to conclusions and that they do believe what they want to. When their beliefs constantly fail them, hopefully they will one day be honest with themselves. Even after leaving the JW's, sometimes it is still hard to question and critically evaluate your beliefs and admit that you still believe things for no other reason than you want to.

2 elders are visiting us next friday 11 oct.. i urgently need some information on how i can obtain original documents regarding the rand cam shares.. i have printed out loads of earlier discussions from this forum, (thanks to everyone involved for all the hard work) but i need to have some authentic material on hand, because that's obviously what they are going to ask for.

does anyone have a phone number where i can obtain this information ?

I just wanted to apologize if I gave the impression the choice you and your husband made to discuss these issues with the elders was somehow a bad decision. I just wanted to make sure you understood before going in what is a likely reaction and I respect what you and your husband ended up doing.

I do understand your position because mine was a similar one. I felt I had to say some things so they understood why I was ceasing my involvement. I am glad I said what I said for the most part and strangely never was disfellowshipped for the things I carefully said.

There is a period of time when the elders do sort of listen to you and have a loving concern because they think you have simply become "weak". But once they realize the true nature of what they are dealing with, that "loving concern" turns to a really nasty anger and I think that is sad.

You may have planted seeds of doubt that might lead to any one of them leaving years from now. But it is nearly impossible to make any headway with them in the present, especially if more than one is meeting with you.

If anything you are nailing your own ass to the wall and that is just fine as long as you went in expecting that.

If I were you, I would just fade away and cease discussions and any further involvement with any of them. From here on in is where they draw the line and you have to tell them whether you are in or out. Maybe you can just quit while you are ahead? But to each their own.

i talked at length with ray franz this afternoon regarding the following comments by bill bowen: ray franz supports the wt policy on child abuse.

he is the author of the two eye witness rule as well as the slander issue that prevents anyone from warning another of child abuse in the congregation.

it is interesting that wt is willing to fight to the last man standing for a policy that in large part was founded by their biggest apostate.

It's funny.. in 1983, the WTS sort of offered a well-worded statement of regret for some statements that were "more definite than advisible" regarding expectations for 1975. But it never really was an apology.

Sure they were "over-optimistic" several times in the past too. But they are only human aren't they? And look at all the good they did. God knows we wouldn't have learned these "wonderful truths" on our own.

The greatest thing is that people's memories are not that great and they quickly forget. If we don't talk about it, they will soon forget it ever happened. And years from now when someone brings it up we will label that person a troublemaker.

Upcoming JW Court Case in Hull/Aylmer, Quebec, Can

my friend sylvie is taking her son to court because he refuses to let her see "her" grand-children.

her son has hired a jw society lawyer.

the sons lawyer wants to talk to sylvie ahead of time.

I would have to agree with the 2 previous posters. The Society lawyer is probably just trying to talk your friend out of doing something foolish.

I agree that it would be nice for her to see her grandchildren, but action like this will further strengthen the parent's resolve not to let her. The parents arguably see her as a corrupting influence and are probably claiming to be protecting their children from her.

This is one of those difficult situations where she is likely going to have to wait until the children are older and hopefully will decide to have a relationship with her at a future date.
