  psychoanalyzing the governing body and other high ranking ones from a distance.. i'm interested in some professional opinions on this, what makes these guys tick, what makes them perpetuate a fraud on the rest of jehovah's witnesses?.

  i know some can be pretty dogmatic in these areas, lets not try to be, lets look at this thing from many angles.

  Today, the Watchtower has a monthly printing of over 26 million and the Awake almost 24 million monthly. The Watchtower is the most widely distributed religious magazine in the world, with an average circulation of 26.4 million copies semimonthly in more than 150 languages.-------- Blondie

  My thoughts (I can't get the quote box off!): Even when I was a dub, I disputed these large circulation figures. Say, there are 3 million publishers, and then non-publishers in the family, all getting magazines--maybe 5-6 million publishers. Each one gets maybe 3 (or more) of each issue, making 15-18 million magazines. Many, if not most!, of the JWs have large stacks of old mags that get thrown out or left in quantities at laundromats, etc. So, the public that gets/reads them is maybe 1/4 of the original number. Of course, you have to add in the JWs who are presumably reading them, which would make another 1/3? It seems to me the original number of 24 million is very misleading.

  First of all is the grandiose delusion that they are appointed by God to carry out his will (Faithful and Discreet Slave).

  That one belief alone is the cornerstone out of which all their other psychotic and delusional behaviour stems.

  If they didn't believe they were appointed by God to carry out his will, would they impose that thought on the followers? Would they "execute" (by DFing for apostasy) anyone who no longer believes in their divine appointment? Would they engender and foster group paranoia about demons, about apostates, about the Internet? Would they engender and foster group delusions of grandeur that create an "us v. them" attitude between JWs and Worldly People™? Or delusions of persecution whenever the directives of the Governing Body are challenged by authorities?---------- Scully

  Plus, I would add sociopaths, psychopaths, or antisocial personality (APD). I have read a bit on that (The Sociopath Next Door and web articles) lately. 1 out of 25 people in the US are sociopaths*. Many religious, political, and corporate leaders are sociopaths. It really doesn't seem to me to be a DISorder, but a particular type of personality. They view other people like toy robots to do what they tell them; they dominate. They never feel remorse for what happens because of that. Most are not violent, but all are dominating. They can be fairly bright. They are manipulative, PARASITIC. Sociopaths are called that, not because they're not social--they are, but because they go against a social order of fair treatment for all, etc.

  Any Lefties?

  my oldest son is left handed.

  everytime he does anything different from the rest of us.....my husband relates this to being left handed.. he is very artistic, detailed, and extremely particular about how he wants things in his little world to be.. this may be because he's 5 - who knows.. are there any traits of left handed people that you lefties may want to share so i can be prepared in the future?.

  The myth of the dying lefthanders
  
  In 1991, psychologists Stanley Coren and Diane Halpern claimed they had found the average life expectancy of lefthanders to be no less than nine years shorter than that of righthanders. This dismal state of affairs was due to the clumsiness of lefthanders, combined with the fact that most machines and appliances are designed for righthanded use. As a consequence, lefthanders were simply accident-prone, resulting in an early death.

  Fortunately, their claim is groundless. It is based upon a survey of almost 1.000 deaths in a county somewhere in Southern-California. At least nine months after a person had died, Coren and Halpern asked surviving relatives what hand the deceased used when writing, drawing and throwing a ball. People are notoriously unreliable in their answers to such questions even about themselves, let alone about their parent, uncle or niece, especially if the person in question has been dead for at least almost a year. Ask yourself about how many of your relatives you could confidently and correctly answer these three questions, and you begin to see how rickety Coren and Halpern's method for collecting data was.

  But not only was their database unreliable, their analysis of the data is wrong as well. For one thing, they claim that lefthanders cause more lethal car-crashes, on account of an ill-conceived theory about 'reversed' reflexes: in a fix, a righthander would jerk the wheel to the right, out of the way of oncoming traffic, whereas a lefthander would do the reverse, going straight for the jackpot on the wrong side of the road. At first glance, this seems to tally with the fact that they did find a relatively high proportion of lefthanders dying in cars among their 1.000 deaths. Only, in view of the total size of their sample, the actual number of lefthanded car crash victims was certainly no more than three. Far too low a number to warrant any general conclusion. Also, it seems that they just counted deaths in cars, disregarding the questions whether the car with the lefthander in it was to blame for the accident, whether the accident was a head-on collision with another car (the only type of accident that would be relevant in the light of their 'reverse reflex' theory) or whether the lefthander involved was even driving the car at the relevant time.

  Also, Coren and Halpers claim that the proportion of lefthanders among the population at large decreases from 20% at the age of 20 to a mere 5% among fifty-year-olds. That means that, even if all deaths between those ages should be lefthanders, the death-rate in this age-range should be around 15%, whereas in reality it hovers around 5%. Coren and Halpern have large numbers of people die who never existed.

  This is some stuff from the website mentioned by Jgnat (THANKS!) and it seems to verify what MOST are saying here, that they have a mixed degree of handedness. Myself too: I do most stuff right-handed, but not write and eat. I don't write with the hooked arm and my writing looks pretty much like anyone's, only prettier (not bragging, it just is) and I'm pretty artistic too. Well, here's some stuff from the site:

  One thing about the story that stood out for me was the movie's portrayal of Rachel, etc., giving their "handmaidens" to their husbands to get children. It sounds so innocuous in the Bible, but in real life, it's entirely plausible the handmaids did NOT want to couple with the patriarchs. They were more like slaves than anything and didn't have a choice the way it's worded in the Bible. Rape is what it may have been.

  Another thing about the Bible was the brutality of executing--murdering!--people, mostly women "adultery," etc.

  What seemed to have a correlation to today's time was the fundamentalists in power railing against the gays, women's right to choose, and insistence on abstinence only. Carried to the full would be brutal against society. Oh! And the religious leaders having their own "sin dens" in private, that the "masses couldn't handle."

  "I quit," I can remember reading novels that touched on cults and being shook by the resemblances to JWs. A few other lines too really stayed with me (Dean Koontz talking about the violence in nature, and Sue Grafton's character stating she didn't like nature, it was bloody, etc.).

  Blondie, the reason the women were sterile (why not the men?) was toxic contamination. When the husbands took the handmaids, they read the Bible, which was their precedent, of women giving their servants to men. Disgusting.

  It was pretty sensational what Bill Bowen did: he had the press go with him to the meeting, cameras and all. The elders apparently chickened out from announcing his df'g, so he stood and gave his own speech about the df'g.

  If only you could get the press to go with you. The other suggestions sound good too, albeit gutsy, more so than I would have.

  Let me join the other and say welcome to the board! It's a great place.

  You said:

  One or two things more to consider is: 1) you would be forcing your family members to make a choice about shunning you and possibly destroying family ties; 2) you're letting the JW organization dictate the rules of your leaving. Do they really have authority over you that you have to follow their rules even in leaving? No, they don't. This has been discussed many times here and it seems the JWs are just trying more manipulation--even on people who no longer believe them!
