Veterans day is a bunch of crap!!

i have several friends that are veterans and they have to work on monday!!

yet teachers (and we know how useless they are) and students get the day off.i have an idea!!

why don't they just let the veterans off, would that be asking too much??

Last weekend the History Channel had a special on the Vietnam War hosted by Mike Wallace. I thought about this reading the last line of DakotaRed's post about the freedom we have to have the day.

In one scene, then-leftist and antiwar activist Jane Fonda was seen sitting in the chair of an antiaircraft gun, grinning from ear to ear, and was quoted as saying she wished she could shoot down some "air pirates" (so much for her pacifism).

Think of the tortures our troops went through, not defending US freedoms in that war so much as South Vietnam's right to exist as a free country. Beaten, getting "the ropes," starved, kept in solitary confinement, goaded by their captors with the threat of keeping them there after the war, and then they got to hear Fonda calling them "liars and hypocrites" for their revelations of abuses suffered at the hands of their captors.

And contrast their return to American soil--spit on, called "baby killers" and so on (yes, the My Lai massacre didn't help their cause, I know, but recall the US helicopter gunship that landed between the villagers and US troops, prepared to fire on the troops to stop the killing) with that of our Gulf War vets. I think I'd be bitter as hell. No doubt many are.

So to those of you who fought; who died or lost friends; who went through things you'll never forget and we'll never know; I say "Thank you" for what you've done, not just in America's service, but in preserving freedom everywhere.

There are those who say that criticizing the government is un-American and unpatriotic. But this country came to be because we disagreed with the King and his tax policies ("No taxation without representation!"). Voting, letter-writing, grassroots activism, are all proper ways to show this country remains alive and vital because we exercise those rights. I have no more patience for the bomb-throwing radical than I do the simplistic "America--love it or leave it" which as was pointed out is simplistic and a lazy person's response to dissent.

Nobody wants war. But so long as there are rulers discontented with what they have and lusting for more, wars will have to be fought. Thank heaven there are people willing to fight them.

Online romances ruiner?

prisca asked how many online romances there were here.. i got to thinking about that at work, among other things (see previous thread).

and besides the "slim pickings" mentioned by a poster in another thread, another potential problem came to mind.. we can probably divide ourselves into two groups here: the "ex-jw's' and the "never-jw's.

I could have worded it better, but...

Although I feel I have more in common with an ex-jw than a never-jw, I would hope that either way the relationship would be based on much more deeper things than jw experience.

Maybe if I was with a never-jw, he might not be able to relate to the pain of being shunned; on the other hand, he might have the resources that I don't have to help me get over that pain and move on.

What I was trying to say was, if an "ex" and a "never" tried to make a relationship work, would that inability of the "never" to not totally relate to the "ex's" past pain doom an ordinarily workable romance?

You're probably right in that the willingness to start fresh each person has will be a big factor. Then too, maybe whether the person was da'ed, df'ed, or fa (faded away) might have a bearing on it, if they aren't open-minded about it. Sort of like a divorce...if it was bitter wouldn't a person be more reluctant to remarry?

What am I feeling for her?

this is going to be a little rambling but i hope it makes sense.

i won't use names out of privacy concerns, but it's as true as i can make it.. where i work, i've begun developing very strong feelings for a co-worker.

her shift and mine overlap for a few hours each day, and i see her when one of her duties brings her to my area of the plant (otherwise we work in separate areas).

I edited this for a wording error. Also, this co-worker's initial is given here as "B." Reason being to make it clear who I refer to at the end of this post.

Matty--All the reasons I mentioned, like chivalric motives, a crush, and so on, I'm willing to consider. That's the reason I posted this and mentioned it to the therapist...a safeguard against me acting on my own flawed thinking, if that's what it is. By "flawed" I mean am I overlooking things, rationalizing, are there errors in logic, and so on.

Yeah I'm married, but I'm not looking for an affair. And if she asks I'll tell her I am married. If I have to gamble my marriage should I see she is being abused, I'll do it. My wife knows I'm unhappy here anyway. Part of the reason I'm willing to gamble this is explained in my reply to LB below.

DakotaRed--To be honest, I don't know she drinks from seeing it personally. If she does I am concerned it could be a crutch.

LB--I couldn't stop the abuse I went through. But if she is, and maybe her son, or he's at least seeing it, it's going to affect both of them...especially him...later on. Then it becomes my problem and everyone else's through social service agencies, police, and the courts. There's wisdom in the saying about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure. Is this motive self-serving, an excuse? May be. I still see some merit in it.

Dantheman--I very rarely think about her sexually. It's usually in a romantic sense. As far as getting my mind off of her--would that it was that easy! I can't turn my emotions on and off like a light switch.

Joannadandy--Yes, all this is speculation. Is the person telling me this trying to play matchmaker, showing her a way out, or some sick game? Unknown. But I'm on my guard.

Sixofnine--If I were that good a writer, my first book would already be on store shelves instead of my computer's hard drive!

Robdar--I know, she'd have to save herself. Maybe I figure one reason she might hesitate is wondering what's out there as far as a replacement--financially, emotionally, etc. As Matty said, love is a strange emotion. But women can be held economically in a bad relationship too.

Several people have given their opinion that this is a crush. How long do crushes last? I've been attracted to her for almost four years. And the last job I had, a woman there appealed to me probably just as strongly. Still does. And I haven't seen her in seven years! Is that a crush? Also, no one's commented on my question about crushes being based on an idealized view of the other person. With "S" from the previous job, I knew she had a temper, wasn't the best housekeeper, had had an affair (one night stand, anyway), and yet...hardly the type who needed protection. So why did I feel a strong emotional desire for her? Sympathy because her marriage was described as dead emotionally? Because her daughter was almost killed in a car wreck? Because she was "caught in a closet" with a member of the maintenance staff and pretty well fired on the spot? I cynically assumed if she put out for one she would for me?

I don't expect anyone to say they can definitely answer those questions. I raise them to point out that "S" wasn't in an abusive relationship (unless emotionally?) as far as I know.

I must have good taste in women...for a while, someone was sending "B" flowers at work. No, that doesn't make my acions right, but apparently someone agrees with me about her appeal.

I am married!

The point I was trying to make is to ask how much the "never's" inability to relate to the "ex-jw's" pain from being rejected by the WBTS would be an irritant in the relationship if one person from each group began one.

I was df'ed too jackfrost, but since I was the only family member in it, knew next to nobody in the KH, and wasn't on super-mushy terms with those I did know, being kicked out was like water off a duck's back to me.

Pettygrudger,

I'm long gone when she gets off. No telling when I will get off work--hours vary daily. Now, if she hangs out at that bar I was told she does, I could show up there, but I worry about the stalking aspect.

Her son has MD, not her husband.

As far as it being a "stretch" to believe her glasses could've been broken by him, all I'll say is "why?"

To me, if I die and take all my organs with me to the coffin or the crematorium, who benefits? But if I can give sight to someone who had none, or even buy someone time with an organ of mine until a better one came along, or my skin could be used for temporary grafts for a burn victim, I'm more than willing to give that up when I die.

We can probably divide ourselves into two groups here: the "ex-jw's' and the "never-jw's." Someone else once said that as a "never-jw" they couldn't relate to the pain ex-jw's feel over being df'ed/da'ed/shunned.

A third group could be those like me who are an "ex" but who were in for so short a time that for all practical purposes we're more a "never." This leads to a nightmare scenario where a scoring system has to be developed for gauging how close to "ex" a "never" is regarding how much emotional baggage they retained from their time with the WBTS so you can tell if a "never" and an "ex" are compatible.

Seriously, how much of a problem might that cause in a relationship?
