I for one am happy that they are adding 10 extra languages to the magazine. It's only fair. The people affected by those languages need to line their bird cages too.

Do Witnesses Ever Talk About Their Living Forever And Never Dying?
by minimus inmy 86 year old mother stopped believing she was going into paradise earth without dying first, about 10 years ago.
my aunt used to think she was going to make it through the great tribulation.
even a week before she died, she clung on to this fairy tale.. do you think jws believe they will never die at all and will, in their lifetime, be on a paradise earth to live forever?.

I know the last time time i spoke with my mother about religion she said something like " All i know is that i look foward to having my little house in paradise with a nice little garden and surrounded by good friends".
It was the first i realized that the best thing for me to do was not to try to open her eyes, but instead let her live the rest of her days in her paradise bliss dream. It would probably be too traumatic for her to realize that she wasted the majority of her life constantly giving up her time and resources to preach a message that is false.
She constantly says that "the end" is just around the corner, so i think she actually believes that she will never pass away.

The Early Morning Field Service Scam.
by I quit! inearly yesterday morning i was driving through town on a street that rearly has any foot traffic and never at 7:30 am on a sunday morning and there they were.
a group of jbubs milling about counting time.
i drove a little further and there was a second group walking slowly down the street in the morning drizzle.

The preaching work is truly a colossal waste of time. If even one tenth of this time was spent volunteering at the "Evil" Red Cross or local soup kitchen, it would actually have some palpable results. Now THAT would be real sacred work.
Instead this work has become a bad joke, where the only thing that matters is to come up with a number that you can put on the field report slip in order to keep you afloat in the congregational status meter. It continues to amaze me how any JW with any self respect could have the nerve to boast about how the JWs are the only ones preaching considering what really goes on.
What is interesting is that, there really isn't any attempt from the top to "weed out" wasted time and get an accurate measurement of actual time spent. Typical corporate bull$hit, where the only thing that matter is to inflate numbers so that everything looks positive and proper.

Jehovah's Pagan Witnesses?
by smmcroberts inrecent responses to teeny's "siestas are bad" blog on jwb have seen witnesses defending their stance against birthdays on the basis that the practice has "pagan origins".
that got me wondering how many things with a "pagan origin" a witness accepts in their daily life without a fuss.
upon examination it seems they may be nearly as "steeped in paganism" as the religions they condemn.. for the details (and at least one good chuckle) please see my latest blog:.

No reasonable person can live in a modern society and separate itself from anything that has some sort of pagan origin or connection. Jehovah Witnesses pick and choose a few to be able to boast about how clean their worship is, ignoring the fact that it is the motivation with which you do things that determines if it is pagan or not.
For example, anything wrong with eating pizza? No. What if i take a pizza and lay it front of a pagan god statue, hold up a slice while praying to that pagan god and then eat it? As silly as this sounds, this is what JWs do. Their point is that someone somewhere 2 or 3 thousand years ago, used something for pagan worship and thus it ruined it for everybody else. How absurd....

What was it about Bethel that woke you up?
by cognisonance inone the how many exbethelites thread it was mentioned that some think one either leaves down the path towards apostasy or as a 100% true believer.
i'm curious what experiences did you face at bethel that woke you up (or started to at least)?.

I used to go swing dancing in manhattan around that time. It might be the same club you are referring to. It used to happen during the first sunday of the month, and the entire place would get full of bethelites and other JWs. It was somewhere in midtown, but i just can't recall the name and it wasn't really a club, it's more of a small live music hall.

TV Ministry a No Go for Watchtower Society....ever wonder why?
by Terry inpastor russell had 20 million readers of his newspaper columns worldwide and as many eager students of his topical bible study, studies in the scriptures.. he advertised for 1000 preachers to sell his books door to door!.
the photo drama of creation wowed 9 million people in the early 1914 synchronizing film, hand colored frames and phonograph recordings.. state of the art!.
judge rutherford availed himself of victrola recordings of "religion is a snare and a racket!

Broadcasting on TV has a few drawbacks for the society - mostly financial
The first is that it costs money and brings no palpable financial return. Yes, the society could ask for donations as part of the broadcast like others do, but the organization has always taken pride in the fact that it does not openly asks for money. This would also probably damage the image of the witnesses uniqueness, and instead put them in the same pot as all the other TV evangelists.
Starting TV broadcasts would gradually make J-dubs think that maybe they don't have to do as much in field service, which leads to the biggest issue: The society, for all intents and purposes, sells a product which is printed material. But in it's business model, the sales reps (publishers) are the ones who actually buy the product, which then give it away (mostly) to the public. Why would the society want to give up this easy and guaranteed business model? They wont.... If Coca Cola sales reps worked for free and bought all the product that the company makes, they wouldn't give that up either.

TIME TO VENT - What Is Your Least Favorite Thought Terminating Cliche' ?
by Perry indefinition: a thought-terminating cliche is a commonly used phrase, sometimes passing as folk wisdom, used to quell cognitive dissonance.. here's mine: we don't believe that way ..... we are christians in this home..

By far my favorite is " Jehovah will take care of it in due time" Or the similar " Leave it in Jehovah's hands" , because that usually means that you brought up a point that the other person has no reasonable answers for it.
We can translate either response to mean something like " It seems you are right, but in order to not break my paradise thought bubble, i will end the conversation here, so that i dont embarass myself"

How is creationism DISPROVED?
by sabastious init is disproven.
but let's start another thread, because this one is being yanked off track again.
creationism/evolution always deserves its own thread.

Wow did this get off topic...
In reality creationism cannot be disproved because there isn't enought knowledge on how things came to be. However creation according to the bible can be disproved. It can be disproved because it conflicts directly with timelines that have been established by science regarding the existence of men in this planet. We can be sure about something : The first man was not created 6000 years ago. To believe in this would be to bury your head in the sand and ignore scores of archeological evidence.
What we also know is that the ADAM and EVE story is not true. The genetic makeup of mankind didn't bottleneck 6000 years ago down to 2 individuals. It's simply impossible.

Actually i was wondering about this as well. I am almost certain they will find out
I know i would be upset if i was those elders. They looked like complete tools in the video. The interesting thing about this, is that if for some reason someone in the congregation finds out about these videos, it will surely spread like wild fire and most likely, the entire congregation will look at the videos even if it's just out of morbid curiosity, which might be beneficial to them.
So Ray, it would be great if you could subtly let someone in the congregation know about this.
Also i'm wondering if with time, the elders will be told to be move vigilant and who knows, potentially use a metal detector or force someone to empty their pockets. I don't think it's out of the question.
