my mother retired from her full-time job recently and has started attending meetings again.

she also has plenty of time to think about her wayward children, including me.

one night, we were talking and she asked me, again, why i wasn't going to meetings.

Yes, but it seems Jehovah is not even able to protect JWs on much minor local catastrophes such as hurricanes and earthquakes. Why is that?

What great witnessing it would be if during those events not a single witness, or a kingdom hall was affected!! Clearly it would be evident to all that this organization would be the place to be.

But yet, they are affected at random just like any other person or building. How strange!!

Governing Body humility: crapping their pants and admitting it stinks

we've all heard the old saying:.

any job worth doing is worth doing right the first time.. but, this would not seem to apply in the only organization on earth claiming to be solely guided by jehovah!.

in the watchtower society, the governing body gathers in a board room and prays, discusses and votes.. presumably the prayer invokes holy spirit of jehovah.

Absolutely. I make this point all the time. If God really had an organization he would make sure that it was accurate, dependable, trustworthy and correct 100 percent of the time. What possible reason would there be for God not to do this?

Wouldn't God in all his wisdom, know that by allowing false and erroneous information to be dispensed by his channel of communication, it would make that channel or that organization unreliable?

Wouldn't God be interested in making his organization unquestionably trustworthy beyond reasonable doubt? Clearly he would. Even an idiot CEO of a news organization would do everything in his power to make sure his organization provides accurate and timely news information. The very success of his organization depends on it? We would expect God to do an even better job, especially considering that the concept is that God can do anything.

When the WT org tries to explain that they received increasing light, they are, for all intents and purposes blaming God for not being able to provide accurate information in a timely manner. This in itself is ridiculous!

Well isn't that wonderful.. God made a special allowance to let a human be wise. You can't make up this stuff... I mean.. to think that God wouldn't simply make humans as wise as possible. Our invisible man in the sky is truly a great engineer.

#3 talk tonight

I've often fantasized about how it would be use a #3 talk to go out with a bang. Just getting up there and calmly touch 2 or 3 subjects about TTATT, then at the end walk down the podium and walk out of the KH never to come back.

I wonder if they would let you finish or if you would you get removed during the talk. Also the comments by the conductor at the end would surely be priceless.

I'm looking at the scanned page of the book and i'm looking at paragraph 5. It says that ""Zoologist Richard Lewontin said that organisms 'appear to have been carefully and artfully designed.' He views them as 'the chief evidence of a Supreme Designer.' "

It makes me sick to see this type of intelectual dishonest. Richard Lewontin is a pro-evolution scientist and this words were taken out context and re-arranged to fit the watchtower's agenda.

This scientist actually responded to this abuse to his words by saying:

" the point of my article, "Adaptation" in Scientific American , from which these snippets were lifted, was precisely that the "perfection of organisms" is often illusory and that any attempt to describe organisms as perfectly adapted is destined for serious contradictions. Moreover, the appearance of careful and artful design was taken in the nineteenth century before Darwin as "the chief evidence of a Supreme Designer." The past tense of my article ("It was the marvelous fit of organisms to the environment . . . that was the chief evidence of 'Supreme Designer' ") has been conveniently dropped by creationists in an attempt to pass off this ancient doctrine as modern science"

Why the field service reports?

some years ago, we had this difficult bible study with a guy who was unofficially a witness for about 40 years, yet he would never make the step of becoming an unbaptized publisher.

we pushed him at some point to tell us the reason, and the reason was this: he didn't agree with the field reports practice.

he said he did a lot of preaching by himself but didn't see any reason to report it to the congregation.. of course, we told him that the reason we hand in field reports is so that we have statistics, and know how much work is done worldwide and bla-bla-blah.

Although this will never happen, this is actually a fantastic point! I've debated this point with active JWs and never thought of this.

It should be in parallel with monetary contributions you make at the hall. Nobody knows who gives, they just count the total.

And this should be the same because it is also a voluntary contribution you make to Jehoober.

of course they could ditch certain teachings and practices such as blood, shunning and homophobia.. how about if they closed the kingdom hall network (all proceeds back to mothership) and built out more regional mega-churches?

The book carts are really mainly for their faithful pioneers to still feel like they are being effective.

Absolutely!! In reality, the organization knows that once the publications reach the Dubs and pioneers, it's not important how they are moved down the chain from there. Income is generated from the rank and file, so for all intents and purposes, they could care less if dubs use them for lining bird cages.

Sitting in a park with a book stand is an easy way to keep hours high. 4 or 5 dubs can sit there all day with little effort. From what i've seen, people pass by pick up a free book while dubs make little attempt at engaging them. The book is thrown out in a garbage can a few blocks down the street while the hour/book counter keeps ticking away, ensuring it all looks good on paper.

High school level education in the US is a joke - always been. This is usually where the comparison is made. This is why a college education is so important here, because you leave high school knowing how to read and a little more.

I'm still not sold on the idea that China will become the next superpower as some people advance. A superpower is not only about cash end economic power as a country. China is a manufacturing powerhouse, but the reality is that they are still way behind in R&D. They still need the West to think and develop products which they will then make their underpaid people produce.

China is a cash rich country, but it's riches don't extend much beyond cash for now. A weak and almost non-existent middle class. 71 percent of the population still lives with under $5 a day.

They are a country which because of the amount of people that are willing to work for close to nothing, has found itself with a bundle of cash falling on it's lap, but are still many years away from being able to make the country and it's people rise to the level of a true developed country.

I concur. Why? I mean, life is grand, but after a long life, enough is enough.

is it? I completely disagree. You would only feel that you have lived enough if you spend day after day doing the same old thing.

There is no doubt in my mind that i will end my life without doing 1 percent of everything i wanted to accomplish. So many places to go and see, so many books and movies and people to meet. Hobbies to discover, musical intruments to learn, etc etc etc etc.

The real issue is that conceptually, living forever in paradise as the Watchtower presents it, seems incredibly boring and unfullfilling. There is only so much planting flowers, smile at each other and sitting around watching a lion and sheep graze together, that you can take. Who wants to do that?

Yes i want to live forever, but HERE and NOW. There has never been a better time to be alive. There are so many good things at your reach that weren't there 50, 100, or 200 years ago, that it's mind boggling. This is paradise.

If you put 7 million JWs in a piece of land and you kill all other humans ( you know the ones you keep things functioning), these 7 million JWs will have a miserable life. Living standards would revert back to 1000 years ago. Gas stations, supermarkets, utility companies are GONE.

Yup, get your shovel and some seeds and get to work, And don't forget to keep rubbing those two sticks together to get a fire going.
