Kate, whenever a JW finds someone who listens and shows interest they will come back and try and talk to you some more. The more interest you show the more they will return. It's possible that the other lady wasn't available to return on this occasion and the man just accompanied her this time and no you won't have to wear a scarf. Be careful my dear, if you are shy and suffer with depression it could make you very vulnerable. One of the things all good JWs want is a 'bible study' with someone. This is what they'll be aiming for. They've got your interest, they'll come back again and again to try and get you interested in having a bible study. If you let them inside your house they'll feel like they've got you. They'll get you to have a study in a little book and they'll come for about an hour every week and then soon will be encouraging you to come to their meetings. Don't be afraid to say no to them if this is what you feel.

Why are atheists so intent on scorning "believers"?
by Chariklo inuntil recently, i had never encountered this word "believers" used as it is being used on this board, to describe pejoratively a group of people.
it's not clear to me whether they scorn all who have a faith of some sort.
do they include buddhists, hindus, followers of the baha'i faith, followers of the cargo cult, native americans along with christians, or is it just christians who are honoured with this epithet?.

You're quite right Chariklo. Although I think it says more about someone's personality than what they believe in. When you can get so many atheists, who although they think believers are deluded will still speak kindly and respectfully or with gentle humour, as opposed to those who try to put over what they believe with dogmatism, self-righteousness and ad hominem attacks. Why do they need to do that? I'm hopeless at debating although I like to read others debating and there are some really good ones but I find it very sad when it goes downhill and I stop reading it. I know I'm far more likely to take on board what someone is presenting if they do it in a mild and dignified manner than if they were heaping scorn upon others.

I don't think all atheists scorn believers. Some may do I'm sure, just as some believers scorn atheists. I have some wonderful atheist friends. They respect me and I respect them, we share thoughts but we don't push our beliefs on to each other and we respect each others differences. The important thing is that each person is happy in their own beliefs. Of course a believer is going to want the atheist to ask him/herself questions about the existence of God and the atheist is going to want to get the believer to question things too. If it's done in a spirit of kindness and respect on both sides then there should be no problems.
At the end of the day I'd far rather be with a happy, kind atheist than a miserable, self-righteous believer (and visa versa)! For me it's all down to someone's personality and disposition than what he/she believes.

Killa, I remember your first posts on here. I'm so very glad you are geting some professional help. What you suffered as a child has severely affected you as an adult and I don't think there is any way you can deal with it alone. It's just a tiny step but it is a step in the right direction. I really hope you carry on writing on here.

I guess I saw the OP as a personal question requiring a personal answer.
What seems to happen with this type of question is that it brings all the atheists to the debating table wanting to tell the believers why they should stop believing, so then the believers come to the table and try to defend the fact that they still do. In a debate like this there are not really any winners unless someone is sitting on the fence and one of the debaters sways him to their way of thinking.
An atheist can't prove God exists anymore than a believer can prove he does. There have been some very interesting points made, even though I haven't got into the debate myself I've read most of the posts. CA makes a good point about the anthropologists findings about children's natural belief in a 'supernatural' even if it is just 'fairies down the bottom of the garden'. For thousands of years people have believed in some kind of god, gods or afterlife. It's only in the light of scientific discoveries that have made people believe in the new religion of science with it's belief in evolution. Does it prove God doesn't exist? (whatever form 'God' may take). I've had a strong belief in God from a samll child, something inside me that a scientist would say 'defies logic and reasoning'. No scientific 'evidence' will sway me from that. If atheists don't like it and think I'm deluded that's tough, it's my life and I have the freedom to believe what I want. The important thing is that it gives me happiness. Scientific discoveries have made me change the way I view creation, timescale etc. but it hasn't made me believe in God's 'non-existence'. However, I do believe in everyone's right to freedom of choice, to believe what they want to believe, think what they want to think and not to put them down because they think differently to me. This by itself makes me a terrible debater. I think human relationships and 'getting on' with people regardless of their views is far more important to me than trying to make someone else see my point of view on a subject. I guess my motto is 'let's agree to disagree and we'll all get along fine'.
Having said all that it's interesting to see others debating. OK.. so now I've joined in and you'll all see how rubbish I am at it.. LOL
and who knows maybe God will settle the debate one day............

It makes me smile these sorts of threads... a simple question for a simple answer turns into one enormous debate that goes round and round in circles with no one getting anywhere.....
think for me the winner in this debate is Outlaw...

I'm not an atheist because I can't look at anything in nature without feeling awe and fascination and I cannot bring myself to believe it didn't have an intelligent designer. I'm not an atheist because I love God. I can't prove he exists to anyone else any more than they can prove it to me that he doesn't. To me he is very real.

Hello Kate, it's good that you are thinking and questioning things and not rushing blindly into something. I'm still a JW. As I was born-in and had no outside influences for most of my life, it's now very hard for me. I love many of the friends I've made over the years, some of them are wonderful people. For me it disturbs me that many of the things I believed to be true because I believed they were from God I realise now are not true and are not from God. It's damaging emotionally to realise you've been lied to (the blind leading the blind), and that you've accepted those lies as truth. You question your own thinking ability, gullibilty, intelligence and many other things. If you do consider looking into it, make sure that you look at every angle, not just the JW side. They will try and say not to look at other sides, that it won't be a good thing. However, if it is the truth then it should stand up to scrutiny. It was a mistake I made.
