Do you play the LOTTERY?
by Fisherman injw view gambling as a sin and sadly people get addicted to gambling causing them financial and health problems.
but is playing a couple of bucks a week on some lottery tickets actually gambling?
what do you have to lose?

Retirement savings
by TxNVSue2023 inwhat's the current jw stance on retirement savings?
i know it changed.
pre1975 it was an attitude of "don't worry about retirement, this system is ending soon".

Back in the 80,s, there were so many getting on the bandwagon of multi level marketing scams that the WT had to warn against it in their assembly talks. I recall Avon, Amway, Mary Kay, Herballife, Shaklee, Tuperware, Primerica, Phone cards, and Del Dotto no money down real estate books and tapes. It was almost weekly someone would try to get you into their scheme. I fell for a couple of these but quickly saw there was no money to be made, more likely money to loose.

So, 60 Years Ago
by titch inso, folks, 60 years ago, starting on september 1st, i believe, we, local witnesses in southern california, had the "privilege" of attending the "around the world assembly", at, of all places, the rose bowl, in pasadena.
(i think that it was an 8-day assembly) i was 9 years old then, almost ready to start 4th grade.
so, was anyone else, on this site, at that assembly?

I can’t imagine the pure torture for children to attend 8 days of this bs in the heat and rain. My memories of 63 were of swimming at the beach across from palm beach, Santa claus in shorts and seeing JFK at WPB airport. All good memories provided by caring and wise parents, from Christendom. Those were the days, when Flipper was just coming out, in living color!

slimboyfat joins the Mormons!
by slimboyfat ini know that some people on the board have experience of being mormons, so i would be interested in your feedback.
at church this afternoon it was an uncanny experience.
in the past i've read a lot about mormons, so i thought i was prepared in general for what it would be like.

I enjoy listening to their tabernacle choir singing “America” and Christmas songs. But that’s it. In Lahaina Maui this tragic week, their building is Beeing used as a shelter since it survived. Wondering if the still standing Kingdom Hall will be used for community good, or just for members only.

Luke 23:43 the NWT
by Ade inluke 23:43 - and jesus said to him, "positively i say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.
nwt places comma here , giving a totally different meaning to the verse.
now the average jw uses this to back their doctrine and it seems in itself virtually impossible to reason with them on it.

The original op is dealing with the training and schooling of the so called translators, and the trust we have put in their knowledge to do a correct job of translating. An example here is , think about walking outside and it is a clear blue sky but with a few small clouds way off on the horizon. Would you rather believe your window washer who says it is going to rain in 2 hours, or an educated meteorologist, who was trained by this field to interpret the weather, who is telling you a hurricane is on its way ,so prepare. The Watchtower has no trained “meteorologist “ on its governing body, just a few window washers.

Did anyone really enjoy assemblies?
by SydBarrett inthe twickenham post made me think of this.
i have a few jw family members on facebook and being summertime, their pics of the convention have shown up in my fb feed.
along with their comments about "i wished it would never end" or "what a glorious weekend".

My time at assemblaughs was a good time to catch up on sleep. It became a little more tolerable when laptops became acceptable and I could leave through surfing the web. I changed my ssid to TTATT-Thetruthaboutthetruth. Now I have empathy for those that have to fake this time in their lives.

a pet peeve of mine
by enoughisenough inputting this under "friends" because i couldn't figure out where to put it.
it is very often on here and in ex jw videos, ect that people like to undermine some of those who once we would have called friends.
there seems to be a view that window washers, plumbers, cleaners, construction workers are somehow less intelligent than those who may be college educated.

Even on the Wheel Of Fortune show, the first question they ask them is what they do. People are so quick to categorize each other into work boxes. On the other hand, if someone said they drank all day and was an arsonist, most people would avoid them at all costs.

Careful what you wish for! Regarding Jehovah in the New Testament
by pizzahut2023 inok i'll bite.. let's say for a moment that jehovah's witnesses are right, and that the nt autographs (the originals) contained the tetragrammaton.let's say that the nt writers always wrote "jehovah" in greek (iexoba, as the witnesses spell it currently) when they quoted the hebrew scriptures, whether they quoted from the hebrew version or the septuagint, and jehovah's name appeared on the quote.
let's say that the original septuagint always had iexoba whenever they were referring to jehovah.then we have that the original septuagint said in psalms 101:26-28 the following:"at the beginning it was you, o jehovah, who founded the earth, and the heavens are works of your hands.
they will perish, but you will endure, and they will all become old like a garment.

When this questionable translation was released , the fact that the men who did the translation remained anonymous, is all the information I need to reject their interpretation of the scriptures. Credentials of the men that did this should be available to all who read this translation because some readers are betting their lives that the translators are 100% correct. Readers have no recourse to address questions, such as the blatant addition of the word “other”, and changing crucify to “to the stake with him”.

Confirmed: CO Discourages Zoom
by XBEHERE ini can confirm that the co during one of his service talks stated that zoom is a provision for elderly, infirmed, as well as people who might need it on occasion due to health reasons, otherwise you are expected to be in person at meetings and in the ministry.
this had to come down from the top.
maybe they do not want to put it in a gb update or broadcast since that would be too public i suppose.

Unintended suggestion here for the Governing Body, why not convert the zoom into a paying monthly subscription similar to Netflix or Hulu? Millions would roll in and control of the masses in one scoop.

Watchtower (Study) August 2023 - gaslighting and deflecting again.
by was a new boy in'they turn the story around to make it seem like you are at fault, deflecting attention and blame away from them to make you feel guilty.
this type of emotional manipulation is called gaslighting.. .
deflection is manipulation, and if it's coupled with other toxic relationship behaviors, it may be necessary to remove yourself from the situation.'.

Those that made “GO” bags 3 years ago , around the time Lett said this was the last day of the last days, are now having to throw out all the expired items. Yet still cling to this dinosaur of an organization.
