What a journey!
It was a year ago today that i was announced from the platform by Brother Paul "Twofaced" Castley that i was "no longer one of Jehovah's Witnesses". I didn't go to that meeting to hear the announcement because i already didn't believe the Watchtower religion.
How was my first year? Well, it's had it's ups and downs for sure. More ups than downs though. My wife moved out to live with her parents, we're still not divorced yet, just "separated" and we share custody of our little girl. Fortunately, my little one was only 2yo when this happened so she slid into the new routine as if nothing had happened. My family, former friends and everyone i knew cut me off immediately.
At the time i still believed in God, but i didn't know who he/she was. So i spent 2 months reading the bible from beginning to end. Not the New World Bastardization, i real bible. I used the NIV (although i have many bibles). I read it on the way to work, on the way home from work and at home until bedtime. I highlighted scriptures that i didn't understand or that i wanted deeper insight on and looked them up online or in bible encyclopedias. Strictly no JW.org or WT Library allowed. I spoke to Catholic priests, i questioned Church Of England vicars, i spoke to a Rabbi, even a Hari Krishna monk (they were more culty than i ever was!). Eventually i read The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins and, wow, i had to be honest with myself and accept that i had no reason to believe in any God.
So there i was. An atheist. And guess what, life became so much simpler and less worrying with zero guilt for sleeping with a girl or not praying before i eat. Sometimes, even now, i get the urge to pray before im about to eat. So i look up the sky and jokingly say "Thanks Thor!". ;)
I was almost homeless because i had to move out within a few weeks, non of my family would help even though they knew i might be homeless. With 2 days to go "worldly" people helped me find a place to move into, and here i am. Moved house, decorated, collected Hindu idols, joined clubs to get me out and meeting people: life drawing, German language pub meetups, photography club and piano. I swapped Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings at the KH for learning something new. So now i have lots more interests and a lot more love for life.
I dated a teacher who was the image of Katy Perry, I've photographed naked beautiful women for "art purposes" in my photography class, i got high in Amsterdam, i spent 8 hours in a gay bar with my gay friend and left a 7am (i was so hungover that day!), i volunteer to get groceries for an old lady in my street who's in her 90s that cant do it herself, im a member of a political party and i feel great for all of those things. I never did anything useful as a JW but now i feel a part of my community and im happy with who or what i am.
I look at still-in JW's and see how depressed they are. They're looking forward to the "new system" but they don't know they could have that joy and fellowship with their fellowman now. They just have to do it and work towards it.
My very first post is here: https://www.jehovahs-witness.com/topic/5748015927132160/trying-leave-im-going-crazy notice the tone of how stressed and anxious i was, compare to now and the posts after i left.
Thank you everyone on this site. You all helped me more than you'll ever know. I feel like i know you somehow, i recognize your avatars, your names, your style of writing and i have a few favorites that i look forward to reading. Dubstepped and Chook, you two in particular are like my new brothers;) im glad we keep in contact.
So, anyone who's just left or is planning to: it's alot better once you're out if you embrace being out and have a thirst for truth - not matter how inconvenient or blunt it may be, and just go with it. Come on here and rant if you want and ask questions.
Thanks again everyone.

It's usually when they go through a major life changing event in their life like a death, new baby or something terrible happens in the world.
Its the only religion they knew so they assume that if any of them are correct it will be the JWs since they "prophesied" all these things. When in reality they said the world is terrible and getting worse.
When a new baby is born they think "I really don't want my baby to die In Armageddon" so make a fresh start.
People who come back never fully purged the propaganda from themselves.

Another JW Urban Legend Thread
by Funchback inthreads about jw urban legends are nothing new on this forum.
they are loads of fun to read.
how many of you remember the one about the teenager who skipped the meeting and decided to get into a car with his worldly friends and they worldly guys decided to rob a store and the jw didn't know they were going to do so but he was arrested simply for being with them?.

There was a popular one here in England that was told to me so many times. It's was always "someone's friend" it happened to. A JW woman walking home alone and being followed by a strange man. She says a prayer and the man stops following her. Later he's arrrested to attacking and raping another woman.
When questioned by police he said he stopped following her because two big men were walking with her.
Bull - Shit
Ive heard about 20 versions of this story.

I'd like to see my approach and attempt at a conversion re-enacted on one of those silhouette presentations they show at the CLAM.
GIRL 1: (to her friend) ...and that's just the beginning, the petrol costs about £50 a week...
ME: <i take a magazine from her hand> Hi. Are you Jehovah's Witnesses?
GIRL 1: Yes (turns to her friend) ....and now im paying £145 a month in insurance alone, i never had this problem with the Renault Cleo...
ME: Yeah, i think i spoke to one of you a few weeks ago. I enjoyed your magazine.
GIRL 2: ...It really depends on the model. My dad used to drive a Ford Focus...
ME: ...
GIRL 1: You can take another one if you like...
ME: What's the book about?
GIRL 1: It's a book that helps you understand the bible.... (to her friend) ...dont go with a rental car. They just eat the money up...
GIRL 2: ...i could go on my dads insurance i suppose...
ME: ...
GIRL 1: ...
GIRL 2: ...
Both now just standing staring at the street.
ME: ...
I walk away bewildered that they even managed to get that job. But at least i got a magazine and 2 books to throw in the next bin i saw.

by dogon ini was thinking of my co grandfather who passed on a few years ago.
his wife my grandmother passed on in 99. i can remember him saying "i know after armageddon i can not be married to her but maybe we can live next to each other.
not sure where the cult stands on this issue today.

My mum remarried a mere 6 months after my dad passed away. She met a guy at the district convention, was engaged within 2 weeks and married 2 weeks later. She thought she wouldn't be married to my dad in the resurrection.
Now? It's a touchy subject to bring up. Although she's still with her new husband, she told my sisters that had she known she could still be married to him she would have stayed single. When i was a JW and not being shunned she used to randomly apologize for rushing into the marriage. I never even mentioned it. But she would always explain herself "had i known i could still be married to him i would have just waited until the new system".
Well mother, this is what happens when you let 7 old men who have zero education in theology dictate your beliefs to you.

Interesting, isn't it, how the first item is physical appearance. The whole religion has become so surface, lacking much depth. Could you imagine a category on "teaching ability"?
oh yeah! haha, i never noticed. No mention of teaching ability or scriptural knowledge.
As for physical appearance. It only takes having a beard and you suddenly get a red X in that box.

Someone sent me this. The scorecard the elders use to judge your cart-worthiness.

Aust 2016 Census observations: JW's getting older, more kids leaving, and 30+ group aren't returning
by shepherdless in1. median age.
experts will tell you that if you want to know if a population is in growth or decline, the best single number to look at is the median age of the population.
i have extracted aust census data and calculated the following approx median ages:.

I'd estimate that 80% only return to get back with their family. This is the strongest handle the WT has on it's members. Without the shunning of family rule the religion would lose power.
The zeal is gone. As i witnesses for myself only yesterday when trying to speak to young witnesses doing the carts. (You can read about that here: https://www.jehovahs-witness.com/topic/5734265788563456/cart-witnesses-today-am-impressed)
And not just from the youngsters, the older generation in my last congregation were either depressed, infirm or just wanted to do pursue their hobbies and spend time with their never JW family members.
I give it 50 years.

The upside to being shunned is that these idiots are less likely to ask for money. If they come near me they'll get told off good.
I'm more relieved that i wont have to fix one particular elders laptop and PC for the millionth time. The stupid fool wouldn't spend £19.99 on virus protection software and i was always at his place fixing his computer problems.
Does anyone know why he kept getting popups for Latina Lovers? Or 8th Street Latinas? Hey, nothing to do with me. I just fix the problems and erase his BangBros search history and pretend i dont know what it is.
