"It Wouldnt Be Possible Without The Holy Spirit" - And Why Today I Learned Why That's A Load Of Crap
by pale.emperor inremember when we were jws and we'd hear from the platform, in conventions and on jw broadcasting that the things jws have achieved could only be possible with the help of the holy spirit?
yeah, well, i used to believe that when i was "in".
since leaving we all know this is bs, but today a simple, non religious, conversation lead me to see how stupid their claim is.. in my attempt to meet people and make friends i joined an international meetup group online a few months ago.

Remember when we were JWs and we'd hear from the platform, in conventions and on JW Broadcasting that the things JWs have achieved could only be possible with the help of the holy spirit? Yeah, well, i used to believe that when i was "in".
Since leaving we all know this is BS, but today a simple, non religious, conversation lead me to see how stupid their claim is.
In my attempt to meet people and make friends i joined an international meetup group online a few months ago. It's made up of expats who've moved to the UK for work/study and they don't know anybody and hope to make friends. So ideal for a shunned Jehovah's Witness. Plus i love foreign languages so it's a double whammy for me. I've went along to a few meetups and met some great people from all around the world and made lots of friends. Today there was a meetup scheduled in town (it's Gay Pride weekend here in Liverpool, a major street party atmosphere), i didnt stay out long as i was with my little girl but i dropped by to say hi to my friends. There were a few new faces and i made friends with them quickly.
There were two Chinese girls there. Their English was impeccable. We got talking and it turns out they both work for the museum in China that houses and maintains the terracotta army. They were here for 6 months to improve their English (not that it needed improving in my opinion) and to assist the British Museum in some fancy-pants restorations. So, two very interesting girls regardless of their beauty (and they were beautiful).
Now, I'd heard of the Terracotta Army before, didn't really give it much thought. It's like when you hear about the pyramids of Egypt or of the Incas, you just thing "hmm, yeah, impressive". But when i asked about their work they really made me realize the scope of what this Emperor Huang did.
Try this guys:
8,000 soldiers
130 chariots
670 horses
400 acrobats
500 strongmen
140 generals
300 officials
400 magicians
All sculpted out of terracotta to the likeness of real people back in the day. And for what? So they would protect and serve the emperor in the afterlife.
Impressed? There's more! Each one was painted too. Each item of clothing, each face, each eye, every little detail.
Now, maybe it's just me, but i think that's WAY more impressive that printing magazines and books in so many languages. More impressive than a religion existing in 90% of countries and more impressive than JW Broadcasting. If the JWs can boast that their work could only be possible with the holy spirit then the holy spirit must have been active here too. Because this is something out of this world.
Actually, if you think about it, 8 million JWs and printing literature isnt so much of a big deal. Any publishing company in the world could replicate what the JWs print if they wanted to. The point is, they dont want to. It's just not profitable... unless of course you have 8 million people "honoring Jehovah with their valuable things".

Theocratic warfare. Great video
by stuckinarut2 inwe all recall the appalling example of vin toole during the australian royal commission when he was questioned about"theocratic warefare".
here is a great video that shows how the society has used, and in turn tried to lie about "theocratic warfare".
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cixj9b6sd34.

Even i'd heard about Theocratic Warfare, and i was born in 1984. When i was a JW i (im sorry to say) was all for it. I genuinely believed Satans world was out to get us.
He's a lying *******. He 100% knew what theocratic warfare was.

JW renaming things: "It's Not this, it's ....."
by Muddy Waters inthis was brought up in another thread, but i thought it should have its own thread.
feel free to add your own observations and experience.
the jws are so duplicit, and they rename things to somehow justify their own irrationalities.

I always used to make jokes to my mother, because every Dec 25th she'd invite the entire family round and we'd have a huge turkey dinner, give presents and drink all day. It wasnt Christmas, no, no... it was simply because there was lots of turkey in the shops and we might as well eat it. And everybody's off work so we may as well get together. And there's lots of great toys and gifts in the shops at the moment so we may as well do our "suprise day" today seeing as we're all together.
But it wasn't Christmas. No, no. It's "a family get-together".
I used to wind her up by clinking glasses with the person next to me and saying "mazel tov!" - it wasnt "cheers" or "drinking to the gods" it was me saying "congratulations in Hebrew".

The Witneses reckon that they are the only ones going door-to-door!
by Bungi Bill ini just had a visit from two guys who are engaged in a door-to-door campaign in the area, preaching "the gospel", and offering, to quote "the best news you are ever going to hear".
this was at 3:30 pm local time, an hour at by which all jws would have long called it a day.
while these two didn't identify themselves with any particular church group, it was quite obvious that they were neither jws or lds.

I've lived in my new house for a year, not a single JW has called on me yet. My old congregation dont know my address so that cant be the reason, and anyway i live in another territory.
It's a good thing the religion is all bullshit, otherwise i'd be toast in armageddon due to not hearing their "lifesaving message".

Question for those who went to the RC
by joe134cd ini'm just curious with all the happy clapping that is now going on with the singing at the conventions.
what has been the reaction to it with the r&f.
has anyone ever commented that it reminded them of a pentecostal revival meeting.
-
pale.emperor
It's slowly metamorphosing into something else.
"Unlike other religions. We conduct ourselves with dignity. Those other religions with their happy-clappy emotionally charged singing - this is not for Christians brothers. We worship our God with dignity." - Our Circuit Overseer 2009.
"Our method of preaching is door to door. We're the only religion that does this on this scale. We dont have to stoop to the levels of other religions with their televangelism and street preaching". - Our Circuit Overseer 1998.
Wonder were those circuit overseers are now?

The craziness of Christianity
by Normalfulla inso i was reading thru a fb feed about poor chester bennington and in relation chris cornell, there were some rather heated and unusual (or usual whatever you may think ) comments... no disrespect to believers but since leaving the jws i just see this type of discussion as lunacy.
... "chester is going to hell ,he killed himself so it's black and white in god's word ."..
"why would a loving god send a person who suffers from mental illness to hell?
-

There's load of people on YouTube who are converts to Born Again Christianity. They have stories of dying and going to hell and seeing Hitler there etc. Then they get sent back up to earth for another chance.
Even if that was true, wouldn't that just mean you're worshiping God because if you dont he'll hurt you? That's not a nice relationship to be in. And of course, they see Hitler in his state of when he was in his "prime". Not the riddled old man he was before he killed himself.

Which Bible Translation
by moreconfusedthanever ini have seen a few comments about the nwt being an altered version of the bible and i must admit that when they released the new one it did not sit right with me.. i want to read the bible but not the nwt.
i also do not want to read one that has the thee and thou and ye etc because that will do my head in.. what translations do you recommend?.
-
pale.emperor
New International Version is a fine translation. I beleive it's used and accepted my the majority of scholars.
I own a few, i'd recommend ESV Student Study Bible. I was amazed. Clear translation with footnotes and deeper insights for each verse. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Student-Study-Bible-Standard-Anglicised/dp/0007453272

One lady comments
My Aunt died and was bought back by paramedics and when she died she said she saw her husband who had killed himself sitting across from jesus so you can trust me that chester is in heaven
It's stuff like this which annoys me. If paramedics brought her back, then she wasn't dead. If there's still brain activity you're still alive. Once that goes. You're gone. The brain only has to be starved of oxygen before you're looking at irrecoverable brain damage even if they do resuscitate you. What this woman had was a dream/hallucination.
Second point. Even if medical science is wrong and she was actually dead, how does she know the guy opposite her husband was Jesus? It could've been Muhammad, Thor, Baphomet or some other undiscovered deity.

Languages, Dialects, Accents
by LoveUniHateExams injust though i'd start a thread devoted to languages, dialects/sociolects and accents, with the idea being that posters can comment on any language, or dialect or accent of any language, on this thread.. any phrases, expressions or idioms that you find interesting are also welcome.
first, the subject of english accents came up on another thread.. the british isles have many different types of accent (although many of the dialects may be dying out), and if i start to take a closer look, i can't help but see 'patterns' .... in received pronunciation of standard english, the letter r is pronounced initially, between vowels, and after consonants, e.g.
red, arrow, break.

Im from a part of Liverpool where they all talk quite strong scouse, but my accent is slight. In fact, words that have a T in the middle, i pronounce with an American accent without knowing. I think it's due to me working in immigration for 13 years. Speaking to foreign people all day everyday and i had to slow down and speak clearly.
However, i can switch to very scouse if i want to. Not that i ever do.
