  i have noticed that the foolishness of jephthah's vow to sacrifice his daughter gets bandied around a lot as somehow approved of by god.

  i never could understand how people could come to this conclusion.

  if i wrote about something terrible that my son had done, that doesn't mean that i am for that thing.

  I like how everyone is suddenly able to understand ancient Hebrew, ancient Greek, Aramaic, Babylonian and whatever extinct language Noah would have spoken even if he did exist (which, of course, he didn't).

  And anyway, can you imagine still having to attending those fucking conventions even after the mass holocaust of non-members?

  And that mention about survivors of Nazi concentration camps... they dont even think about the others who were there. Jews had is ten times worse.

  did anyone catch michael palin's travel documentary in north korea?

  it was a fascinating insight into such a secretive and controlled country.

  totalitarian, suppressed and yet i found a few similarities to jw mentality.. particularly, this segment, where michael asks his handler about the limitations on freedom she has.

  Michael Palin is looking old. I think by his complexion he may be a cigarette smoker.

  I've read his diaries 1969-1979. He used to be a chain smoker just before the Python days. He stopped when he first child was born, and Terry Jones encouraged him to start a different habit.

  Did anyone catch Michael Palin's travel documentary in North Korea? It was a fascinating insight into such a secretive and controlled country. Totalitarian, suppressed and yet I found a few similarities to JW mentality.

  Particularly, this segment, where Michael asks his handler about the limitations on freedom she has. She lacks the freedom to question or criticize her leaders, yet she's been led to believe that this is a good thing because (from 1:59 in the below video) "They are not individual, they represent the masses. So we cannot criticize ourselves, can we?"

  Have you ever known elders who were more into being and elder than really being a believer?

  i have known many elders who were much more into the idea of being an elder and getting all the old ladies to tell them what wonderful talks they give and the power then really being a believer.

  i had one elder tell me that when he became an elder he was on top dog on top of the heap.

  i knew some who were really all about the religion and following the cult.

  Where else but in the Witness religion could you have a guy who has no status in the REAL world..elevated to feel important (or at least important in the little fishbowl he’s in)?

  In the congregation I was raised in, it was the same elders for a good 20 years. They were either related - father, son or brother, brother or long time serving men. You didnt have a chance in hell of being appointed. They liked to keep it in the family. We had the same min servants for like 20 years.

  Eventually, some of those elders died and one ran off with his secretary and was DFd. Then, lo and behold, within a year they appointed a load of min servants to elders. This was taken as wonderful guidance from Jehovah. The min servants were replaced by appointing brothers who were absolutely unsuitable. My brother in law being one. He was on the fence about the religion at the time he was made a servant, then suddenly the religion was the best thing in the world.

  In my last congregation it was all about power. They only appointed their friends. It was an open joke in the congregation that in order to be an elder you had to live on "__________ Street". The street where all of the elders just so happened to live.

  Some congregations, it seemed like you just collected so many tokens on cereal boxes and mailed them off and became an elder. Zero bible knowledge.
  

  None of them were in it to serve others and provide encouragement. In fact, of all the elders I've known I can think of only one from when I was a kid who seemed to genuinely love the brothers and sisters and was very kind.

  One brother, a WWII veteran, turned down being an elder 4 times. And ironically he was absolutely the kind of person I respected and thought should have been one.

  The desire to be an elder should disqualify for life anyone ever being one.

  i observe that many jw family members follow the instructions of the elders at zoom meetings like they come directly from god.

  I think of JWs like you mentioned the same way I think of someone who is mentally ill. You ever met anyone with dementia or with a severe developmental disability? That.

  They say things normal people wouldnt say.

  They do things normal people wouldnt do.

  They think things about the outside world that normal people dont.

  They're mentally ill. Being in the JW org is self-induced mental illness.

  US Letter Read Sunday 4/26 at Meeting - No KH Use and No Field Service Indefinitely

  there was a letter read sunday at our meeting that mentioned some parts of us are starting to open back up.

  however, regardless of things opening up that no kingdom halls should be used for any meetings of any kind.

  also, no door-to-door ministry or any form of in-person ministry is allowed.
