One Eye Jo I thought about that. I guess I assumed that if you're DF'd and someone says hello out of friendship then that's a signal that they don't care if you're DF'd. This is however an assumption, quite a few of which I've made in error recently.....

Strange doings at the Market
by ctrwtf inso i recently made a trip back to my home town to visit some extended family still in.
the whole trip was very awkward.
for a whole bunch of reasons i won't bore you with, we stayed in a hotel near where the family lives, maybe as kind of a barrier to being in constant contact with the cult mentality.. being a very early riser, i went to the grocery to pick up a few things.

So I recently made a trip back to my home town to visit some extended family still in. The whole trip was very awkward. Being a very early riser, I went to the grocery to pick up a few things. Because this is an area that I grew up in my JDAR was up and running at peak performance. I came across a clerk stocking some shelves and with her back to me I excused myself and asked for directions to an item. As she turned I immediately recognized the face from a long, long time ago.
I went to pick up my item and as I returned, I made a brief introduction. I'm sure she wouldn't have recognized me because it's probably been 30 years or more. I asked how her parents were because they were great friends with my parents. We used to go camping as families together and to each others homes for dinner. Did I mention that this lady and her mother were DF'd for apostasy? Or so I was told i should add.
Here's the part that left me dumbstruck. She denied ever knowing me or my parents. She denied ever having parents named ________ and ________. Or a sister and brother named________ and ________.
I apologized profusely for my "mistake." This, even though her nametag positively ID'd her.
I obviously felt very bad for having intruded on her life from out of the blue. I feel very bad for probably dredging up something she would rather have kept buried. But today, I'm wondering what drives a person to deny their parents? Or, what makes them so deeply guarded that a brief encounter with a long ago friend shuts them down?
To me, it's a testimony to the horrific powers of the cult mentality to deeply psychologically wound someone. The scars from which we will bear forever. Next time, I'll be more cautious about those I approach.

Naziaphobe... Why Protect Ideologies from Criticism?
by freemindfade innaziasm is an ideology... islam is an ideology... both encourage dangerous, ugly ideas... .
if i say "screw nazi's" no one is going to call me a racist, a xenophobe, or a naziaphobe.
anyone is capable of snapping, or just being an ahole and committing atrocities, but why does radicalization work so well in islam?

I'm inclined to believe that it's not so much the religion that foments radical terrorism but rather the political and economic fabric of society in the middle east that is responsible. I would point to the fact that in mostly prosperous, stable societies radical islamists are about as rare as right wing nutters that bomb abortion clinics or shoot up AAME churches. The recent bombings in Paris and attacks in the US are being inspired by the radicals in poorer countries, not the Mosque around the corner.
The middle east has been and will continue to be a hotbed of government corruption and economic instability that sparks isolationist, fundamentalist thinking.
It's alarming that in the US and Britain and other western countries, the political trend is to feed into the same fear and economic anxiety that the Imams in Iran are using to whip up unrest. Brexit and "I'm gonna build a wall," pander to the same base fears of people on the margins of society.
The comparison to Nazism is interesting inasmuch as the National Socialists ran a campaign of fear and hatred of the Jews at a time when Germany was on the ropes economically. Sounds to me alot like the Republican Party today.
Just my two cents.

Is it persecution or just a poor decision?
by ctrwtf injust been thinking about the "persecution" video where the modern day "job" loses everything.
here's an alternative narrative.. instead of turning down the salary job in the next town over, our hero takes the job even though it's a tough commute.
he is still able to contribute in a meaningful way to his "ministry.

Just been thinking about the "persecution" video where the modern day "Job" loses everything. Here's an alternative narrative.
Instead of turning down the salary job in the next town over, our hero takes the job even though it's a tough commute. He is still able to contribute in a meaningful way to his "ministry." He just sleeps less. (like the rest of us) After a while he makes such an impression that he is promoted, sells his dump of a house in the first town and moves closer to his job, purchasing an even better home in a better school district for his children.
Because he has health insurance through his workplace, he get's screened for cancer and they are able to detect a pre-cancerous polyp. In an outpatient procedure he has it taken care of and doesn't miss a beat with his work, family and the all important "ministry."
Because he is well paid, his wife doesn't have to take a job cleaning someone else's house. Therefore, she doesn't have to have the myopic grandpa pick the kids up from school, meaning that they avoid the fatal accident altogether.
My point is, all of his "persecution" could have been avoided by a better decision. But that is too simple an alternative for the purposes of a mind control doomsday cult.

Born Twice - Die Once .... Born Once - Die Twice
by Perry injesus taught that we must die unto ourselves, and allow the holy spirit to take up residence within us.
some people get saved by simply inviting jesus into their hearts, to be the lord of their life.
this serves as a countering force within the born-again christian to counterbalance the will of the flesh, which is still unsaved in this life and destined for destruction in imitation of our lord himself.. attempting to live the christian life without having this spirit within you is a waste of time at the minimum, and dangerous on the downside.

I'm going to use the old illustration about a little poison in a large glass of water. Would you drink it?
Under Hitler, Germany was a model of order and economic boom. Would you say that it was good for some?
Iraq under Saddam was probably better off than it is now. Do you think they want to go back?

@Moly Sorry for your predicament. That song has always touched a nerve for me too. Particularly the line "when I was a child I had a fleeting glimpse." I knew at age 13 that this was BS. But waded through it until 45. Cannot get those years back but am making the best of the time ahead. My best to you and yours.......

What adult has conversations such as this that are beyond puerile?
I realize that as a New Yorker my response to most of these demonstrations would be, "get the F outta here!"
No, literally get the f outta here!

@DJS I agree, with the exception that we needn't wait for the Govt to act. As individuals we need to voice whenever possible that this type of fundie hatred needs to stop.
