A Thought Experiment
by InjusticeSystem ini am hoping some of you may be up for participating in a little creative thought experiment .
the question i would like to pose (and if it has already been asked i apologize, for some reason i cannot search for topics on my mobile) is this: what would the evidence show if the jehovah's witness' literal reading of genesis was true?
i realize that is a fairly broad question, but for example a more pointed question could be: if the vapor canopy hypothesis is correct (i have confirmed with my elder father that this is still a currently accepted understanding), what evidence in our genome or that of other creatures or on earth would we expect to see?

If as the wt believes, the flood covered the entire earth to the height of Mt Everest for example, then every living thing aboard the ark would have died from lack of oxygen and/or pulmonary embolism at close to 25,000 ft. -

Original Sin / Salvation without a literal Adam and Eve?
by Coded Logic insomething i've never understood is if adam and eve are just metaphorical where did "original sin" come from.
and, if there was no original sin, what is the value of jesus sacrifice?.
i know a lot of christians believe in evolution but i've never understood how such a belief is structured.

This was the linchpin in my exit of the wits and belief in religion in general. No Adam/Eve. No original sin. No kingdom promise. No Armageddon.
Most mainstream religions treat Genesis as a myth or allegory. I'm not sure what theological gymnastics are involved in integrating that into whatever belief system they have. Sorry, as I've written, I pretty much gave up on religion. I admire the fact that they don't just deny science the way the wits and other fundamentalist crazies do.
It seems to me that evolution and the Genesis story are really two different subjects. Adam and Eve are mythical and the tribal accounts of the Hebrews are mostly the fictionalized histories that have woven themselves into the life and belief systems of Christians and Jews.
Evolution on the other hand, addresses the more generic (and scientific) question of how life began.
Just my two cents.

How do you feel about the expression "The Truth"?
by stuckinarut2 init's amazing how the expression "the truth" has become such an ingrained term used by witnesses.. "we have 'the truth'".
"is he 'in the truth'?".
most here have found out so many facts about the organisation, and felt the effects of being "gut-punched" as we realised these facts.. so how do you feel about the expression "the truth" now?.

That expression is utterly vomit inducing. I try to avoid it at all times. -

Awake 2016.2 experience
by nelim inhi all, what do you think about the experience on page 4 of 2016.2 awake?.
maria, who is one of jehovah’s witnesses, was publicly insulted by a prejudiced woman, who caused quite a commotion.
but instead of retaliating, maria calmly continued on her way.

I gotta call BS. Why are such experiences delivered with first names only? If this were real wouldn't the individuals involved want to stand by their story? -

W. E. B. DuBois vs
by ctrwtf inlistening to a program regarding w. e. b. dubois the other day that quoted his writing in what was i think "the souls of black folk.
" sorry to be too lazy to cite it myself here.. the gist of the quote was that men need to have goals that are broad, inspired and pure.
not sordid money-getting.. that phrase, "sordid money getting" made me think of course of the watchtower.

Listening to a program regarding W. E. B. DuBois the other day that quoted his writing in what was I think "The Souls of Black Folk." Sorry to be too lazy to cite it myself here.
The gist of the quote was that men need to have goals that are broad, inspired and pure. Not sordid money-getting.
That phrase, "sordid money getting" made me think of course of the Watchtower. It seems to me that while all religions are of course seeking donations, most also give back substantially to their communities. Most other major religions have set up Universities. Most have broad based charitable organizations. At the least, most provide real comfort to people at the most difficult times of their lives. Most other religions don't expel people for thinking freely.
On the other hand the WT seems to be engaged in broad based money grabs from congregations. Lucrative real estate sales and swaps and most recently, TV evangelist style outright begging. Add also, massive layoffs all to preserve the bottom line. It resorts to extensive thought control to retain membership. It seems that sordid money getting is an apt description.
I've also had the "pleasure" of dealing from time to time with various individuals within the congregation on a business level. I've been astonished at the level of cut-throat competition even among so-called brothers. I've seen those who will use deceit to steal other brothers clients, then go to the meeting and proclaim their self sacrificing love for one another. I've seen builders that will cut every corner to pad their bottom line to the detriment of another brother. I guess the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.
It seems ironic that about the same time CTRussell was thinking up his scheme, DuBois was inspiring a movement that has really helped all men aspire to a higher purpose. Recent newsworthy events show we have a long way to go in realizing the dream of equality across race and gender. Still, I'd rather contribute to any charity or organization that isn't involved in "sordid money-getting."
