Deborah Layton - Jonestown Survivor
by Tallon insaw this on the exjw reddit forum - very thought provoking.. "when your own thoughts are forbidden, when your questions are not allowed and our doubts are punished, when contacts with friendships outside of the organisation are censored, we are being abused, for the ends never justify the means.. when our heart aches knowing we have made friendships and secret attachments that will be forever forbidden if we leave, we are in danger.. when we consider staying in a group because we cannot bear the loss, disappointment and sorrow our leaving will cause for ourselves and those we have come to love, we are in a cult .... when family and friends are used as a weapon in order to force us to stay in an organisation, something has gone terribly wrong".. deborah layton.
seductive poison: a jonestown survivor's story of life and death in the people's temple.. .

Thanks for sharing that quote Tallon.
That just about sums it all up for anyone who has become a member of the Watchtower Bible and tract Society and then wakes up.

Physically In, Mentally Out
by James Jack in7 years ago i was this "ultra spiritual elder".
you name it, i was visible all over the region.
i was the coordinator, on the convention committee, rbc, had a talk at every convention and assembly, regular pioneer, etc.

Hi James Jack. As your experience shows. It doesn't matter how high you jump in this organisation. Rules must be followed according to the book of GB.
It's extraordinary how someone of your stature can be cast aside as an elder at the drop of a hat.
The Societies rules are smothering people's faith. Their endless rules have smothered mine.
All the best to you and your family. I hope you manage to keep your faith in God and not allow men's rules to get in the way. Thanks for sharing your experience.

What woke you up?
by MrRoboto infor me, i think it was just the right time as i was starting to wake up on other fronts as well (anyone who had went through these will know what i mean).
but it started when i was looking for what info goes on a publisher card, which led to me reading one person's story (ex bethelite) which was pretty crazy to an all-in jw but who trusts those apostates...?.
then i started watching videos on cults, as if my subconscious was trying to tell my concord mind something... when i saw a particular one about a young man in lds getting ready to start their 2 year preaching campaign, including a school, social activities etc, i realized that i couldn't tell the difference between the folks of this mormon cult and the jws (save for some religious differences) .

I remember a long time ago being asked to attend a study by a sister. Reluctantly I went. She thought it best she take the study as I was only standing in.
She then explained her reasons why she had to wear a head covering and proceeded to wrap her scarf around her head. She didn't think to wear a suitable hat of some sort. Nope. She decided to look like a female version of the maharaja. The guy just looked at her and must have thought what wacko.

Is JW.org unbreakable
by UnshackleTheChains ini ask this question for good reason.
let's face it, despite all the books, videos, forums, court cases, hearings, protests etc that have been exposing the society for many years.
jw.org continues to roll on almost 'it seems' unscathed.. for example, just walk into any kingdom hall there is not so much as a whisper about anything that has been exposed outside of jw land.

Russell's aleged freemasonry on JWfacts.com
by NikL inpaul has written an interesting piece on jwfacts.com .
https://jwfacts.com/watchtower/blog/russell-not-a-freemason.php.
anyway, it jogged my memory and reminded me of something i thought i would pass on to you.back in the late 80s i had the opportunity to chat with ray franz on the phone and i asked him about this very thing.he didn't say yes or no to russel's masonic connection but what he said was something like, "he is buried in the masonic section of the cemetery so draw your own conclusion.

I find it interesting that masonic halls had been used quite regularly in early times. Even the fact that our place of worship is referred to as a Kingdom 'Hall'.
I also find it interesting how Jesus is down played in the society s literature, even though the scriptures says he is the way, the truth and the life.
That YHWH is referred to as the likely more inaccurate term JEHOVAH.
Freemasons use masonic halls, use the term JEHOVAH and downplay Jesus Christ. Interesting similarities.

Did anyone ever take a lend of any of the society's old books from the KH library without telling the elders?
by UnshackleTheChains ini did this last year.
it was one of the studies of the scriptures by ct russell.
i read about half of it, but then got fed up reading it and put it back about 2 months later.

I did this last year. It was one of the studies of the scriptures by CT Russell. I read about half of it, but then got fed up reading it and put it back about 2 months later. It was sitting on my book shelf at home during that time.
The reason I didn't ask any elders if I could have a lend of it was because they would likely be wondering why I am wanting to read old light.
The book was quite interesting in that it was promoting the idea that other churches could use the book to upbuild their congregations. CT Russell seemed to be a bit more inclusive of other Christian faiths.

What Happens If the JW Beard Policy Stumbles a Person
by Cold Steel insome of the videos on youtube really make the beard policy look ridiculous.
i wondered what would happen if the jw beard policy caused someone to stumble?
jesus most likely wore a beard, and charles taze russell had a beard.

Whilst on holiday in a tourist location last year, I remember seeing men of all age groups wearing beards. Clearly some of the elderly ones wearing beards had a Bob or two in their pockets. What struck me about them was how smart and respectable they looked wearing their beards. It was another reminder of just how backward and narrow-minded the organisation' truly is when it comes to controling people's lives. Fussing over trivialities!
