  The final chapter in the confusedandalone story...

  this morning i get a frantic call from my sister (who has been baptized 1 year and one month and never attends meetings anymore).

  in tears she tells me that this morning my father picked her up in the car and told her that i was am apostate.

  that i no longer loved jehovah and that i was going to be disfellowshipped.

  Congratulations Confusedandalone, and best wishes with family life, your marriage, and your business. I don't think you'll have much problem anymore.

  I have seen elders after a DA or disfellowshipping turn up the rhetoric on those that are either working for a disfellowshipped or disassociated person or employing disfellowshipped, disassociated persons. The elders start harassment of brother who is either employer or employee.

  They threaten the usual things, from taking away privileges to even disfellowshipping. From what I have seen when previously an elder, the elders get the attitude of "rule or ruin", and they can get very vindictive and try to ruin someone financially, character assasination, etc. I even had an elder make a pass on my wife using the "he's a useless apostate" argument.

  I'm curious what the elders wanted to talk about, whether it was a case of "things have got blown out of proportion and we are here to settle things down" or other chit chat.

  Encounter at McDonalds

  so i was helping some friends move and it came time for a break, i took my kids to mcdonalds.

  we're sitting there and there's a family across from us, man, wife, 2 kids under 4. in the next booth is this older guy, maybe late 60's.. i'm not really paying attention, but then this older guy says something to the family about everybody being "me-first" these days.

  so that caught my ear.

  It does sound like the elderly man in McDonald's has diminished from what was previously a sure thing, strong faith, imminent reality to now just a comfort.

  Former Elders? What did you not like about serving as an elder?

  a few of my pet peeves were:.

  the po/cobe knowing that he needed to have an elders meeting after the meeting but not telling any other elders.

  humm, but his wife knew.

  when i was out in field service yesterday i was approached by some sisters asking me how my dying dad was doing.

  i said "i try not to visit him, you will have to ask him yourself.

  Crazyguy, so your thought is that there are those that take their financial benefits from Witnesses, but if the lender/generous one isn't faithful to the org. then the indebted have a clean slate and owe nothing to the person that helped them in financially tough times. Interesting.

  -what exactly was their standard of living?

  could they afford some nice things sometimes?.

  -how much did they socialize with other witnesses, either those serving in other areas or those in their assignment, outside of meetings and service?

  I had great grand parents that traveled full time for five years from 1920-1925 in Texas placing the book "Millions Now Living Will Never Die". This book taught as undeniable truth that the end would come in 1925. They had two children "on the road" as they served as "Pioneers".

  They had a flatbed truck as their service vehicle with all their belongings. The truck had a chicken cage under one side of the truck's flatbed for live chickens that laid eggs for them. They lived on the side of the road as they traveled, and they mentioned to later relatives, of regularly sleeping on rocks outside without the cover of tents. When they returned to xxxxxx they had nothing and had to get the help from their parents and other family. Interestingly, when they showed up in xxxxxx, they were so poor looking with worn tattered cloths and shoes that they were ignored by most in the congregation. (Again, family history).

  I sure wish I could time travel and stop the JW cancer at an earlier time.

  A few of my pet peeves were:

  The PO/Cobe knowing that he needed to have an elders meeting after the meeting but not telling any other elders. Humm, but his wife knew. His family would show up at the hall with two cars so his wife and children could go home, but the other elders and their families were stuck waiting and kids having homework. It never ended up a "short" meeting.

  Another beef I had, was an elder having the bookstudy in his house, (god I'm old), but would not turn the air conditioning on until the meeting started and it was set very high. (He was cheap or could not afford to run the air conditioner) If you were the reader or the conductor, he insisted that you wore your suit jacket, although it was HOT in the house. Oh, I just loved the Texas summers.

  We got directions that the elders meetings were supposed to be limited to two hours (?, bad memory) and the PO/Cobe just kept going as if the council did not apply to our elders meetings.

  Wanabee Elders & Ministerial Servants

  there were a lot of wannabee elders and ministerial servants in the congregations.

  if you were a male and baptized, it was expected that you "reach out".

  everyone wanted to have a position.. wives and mothers of men wanted representation too.

  I cannot comment on much recently, as in the last 5 years. But the last memory of men eager to be either servants or elders has been around 2004-5. In the congregations in my home town, there are many older men who have served in years past as elders but they are not serving now.

  The majority of these brothers are the victims of elder bodys' righteous indignation (politics). After experiencing the wrath of an ungrateful body of elders who are disciplining fellow elders for minor infractions it can either lead to removal or if they move, not receiving a letter of recommendation at the new hall. Once the spell is broken these brothers find out how simple their lives can be and how much more time they have.

  Imagine driving to and from the meetings with your wife and family and not alone. After the meeting, hanging around for a few minutes driving home with your family, possibly catching a snack and a few beers, margarita's, or martini's at Chili's, Applebee's, or P.F. Chang's and still getting home before you would before.

  As elder body's grow older and the uber elder/nerds take over, it will be even more difficult to get someone, especially younger men interested in joining the elders men's "club". Too much work that is mostly unappreciated, others elders can be hyper-critical, and some are just window washing idiots that have no clue. Perhaps WT should change proceedure and start having the elders meetings at a men's club and pass out Cuban cigars. LOL.

  What would it take....

  i was speaking to my sister the other day.

  she has faded much quicker than i. she moved on with her life along with her husband and family.

  we still talk every day and share our little ditties about life.

  Separation of Powers, good question, and yes, everyone is different.

  Do you think that you have a good enough relationship with family that you could lead the rest of the family away by example? If you just stopped, would they think, hey what made brother quit, something must be wrong with the org. or he is upset with something?

  It is possible that some in the family are continuing for the reasons you stated. I don't know if you are in the same hall or not, but if one sibling might not want to stand out from another with mom or dad. But I don't know your situation.
