  PORTUGAL: Filed a petition to the parliament to erase the legal entity of the Jehovah's Witness

  based on legal arguments that revolve around violations of several articles of the portuguese constitution, and of the law of religious freedom, a petition to the portuguese parliament has been set in motion to extinguish the legal entity that represents the jehovah's witness in portugal and remove this community from the national register of recognized religions protected by law.

  the petition does not seek to ban the jehovah's witness as a whole in the country.

  the petition denounces the institutional policy of shunning former members as a violation of basic human rights and psychological torture, and asks the portuguese legislators and judicial authorities to take action to stop this abuse, and suspend legal recognition to the branch office entity until the policies of shunning are changed.

  As for shunning he was told 'some' people may shun but it is very rare.

  Interesting. Jw's have been pretty much clear about their shunning and it is very well documented in numerous of their literature what behavior they expect from their R&F toward disfellowshipped ones. He could have easily known about their shunning by reading their own literature.

  If jw's were honest at the doors they would say something like this-

  The rules and points that you have listed are pretty much explained in the "God's Love" book. It is a complete rule book that covers almost each and every aspect of a JW life.

  and a choice that is imposed on you by an institution by means of coercion.

  Interesting. But how would you prove that JW's use coercion? At the first place, joining the religion is voluntary and a person who joins the JW's is very well aware of the JW rules.

  How did he know they were “helping” the young people? What kind of evidence could he provide? What kind of numbers? Did he just have one or two local anecdotes? Had somebody done some kind of controlled, detailed sociological and/or psychological study? How many were involved in the study and over what period of time? What kind of methods were used to measure the “help”? Had a follow-up study been done to determine whether the “help” was lasting or just short term?

  Magnum, Honestly speaking, not all statements that we make can have the backing of detailed studies and statistics. Much of it is based upon our own experience and those of others.

  For e.g. In your previous posts on this forum you have made the following statements:

  Many are suffering now financially because of having been JWs.

  Many JW’s are on medication for mental/psychological/emotional reasons.

  I'm sure that before the coup, the non-GB members of the FDS were a thorn in the side of the GB

  I'm virtually certain that Harvey won't cost the org a penny

  So, do you have actual numbers and studies, as in how many JW's out of 8 million are suffering financially specifically because of being JW's? or do you have reliable stats of how many JW's take mental health medications? Can you apply the questions you made in the OP to your own statements?

  Or did you make these statements out of your own life experience, your experience in the congregation and of the people on this board?

  This week's (Jan 29th - Feb 4th) CLAM meeting "terrorist attack" video ...

  this week's clam meeting has a video from jwborg entitled refreshing those “toiling and loaded down” about the organisation's response to two terrorist's attacks in new york (twin towers) and paris (bataclan 2015).. to me it is more about a back slapping "look what we do for you" than a "left hand not letting the right know" (matt 6 v 3) action of love and care.. ... ... ... ... ... .... if you've read this far - by contrast please google "didi bataclan paris" to read about a true unsung hero.

  not forgetting the true heroes of 9/11 .... ... ... ... ... ... .

  Sorry for derailing the discussion.

  Regarding your question, you are not being cynical because the video is a propaganda video which is made by the WT to further their ideology.

  Now about my comment, contrary to what steve2 is implying in his comment, I did not mean to say that I am not sympathizing with other non-jw's who lost their loved ones in the attack. It was just that while watching the video I saw a couple who lost their son in the attack. Hence rather than concentrating on the ideology behind the video, which I can do for hundreds of other videos that they have produced, I tried to think about the parents and what they must have gone through. Being an Indian, I may never have known who all lost their lives, neither would have visited the memorial, so took this a chance to think about the people I saw in this video. Just that.

  For JW's here in India, this video would be more of an informational video of what happened to other JW's during 9/11.

  For me, rather than comment on intention behind the video, I take this time to sympathize with the JW's in the video who lost their loved ones in the attack.

  Don't Try to Choose Your Beliefs

  beliefs are not things to be chosen like new clothes; authentic beliefs happen to us without our conscious attention.. i have often seen comments from ex-jws to the effect that they are now unsure about what they 'ought' to believe.

  others express offense when their chosen beliefs are challenged and well-meaning bystanders protest that everybody is entitled to believe whatever they wish.

  this misunderstanding of what it means to believe something is unhelpful.. it's natural to want to quickly replace our old beliefs when our worldview has collapsed around us.

  The Cambridge Dictionary defines belief as the feeling of being certain that something exists or is true.

  If one can question the existence of God, then each and every religion, sect and cult and religious belief out there can be debated or debunked.

  Can all beliefs be classified as right or wrong? or does it depend upon perspective?

  For e.g. Are the following random statements actually beliefs or perspectives?

  I believe in God

  I believe that God does not exist.

  I no longer believe in the truthfulness of politics because of the high rate of corruption in my country

  I don't believe in the arrangement of marriage.
