  Have JWs and other Christians completely missed the point of Matthew 24:4-8?

  many people think those verses are suggesting that the wars, earthquakes, food shortages, etc are all a sign that the end is imminent.

  however, a careful examination of the context seems to suggest that jesus was actually forewarning his followers not to draw such a conclusion from such events.

  Bobcat: This causes many to think that Matthew 24 is describing the very same thing as Revelation 6. Matthew 24:4-35 is instructive in showing a pattern that is followed in Revelation, but problems occur if one tries to map the one over the other since the things in the Matthew account are specific to the 1 st century.

  I agree, and disagree. We can tell which is which.

  Some things clearly were not meant for the 1st century; Jesus gives local (Jerusalem’s 70 CE destruction) as well as a future projection:

  Mat. 24,

  • great tribulation, unequaled from the beginning of the world … never to be equaled again. (future)
  • the powers of the heavens shall be shaken (future)
  • see…the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory (future)
  • This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. (dual, local/future)
  • as in the days that were before the flood… Noah entered into the ark. (future)

  Rev 6,7:

  • kings …great men…rich men…chief captains…mighty men…bondman…every free man, hid themselves (awaiting)
  • the great day of his wrath is come (awaiting)
  • four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds (could be happening)
  • Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God (awaiting)

  Mt 24: AV

  • 21 …there will be great tribulation, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again NIV
  • 29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
  • 30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
  • 31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
  • 34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
  • 38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark,

  Re 7: AV

  • 1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.
  • 2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,
  • 3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

  The Society was in position to be helpful, but Judasized (coined lol), became a traitor like Judas.

  Chuck is a good man. I think he's genuine enough to handle the rude awaiting that Moses and Jesus did not believe nor teach 4th century RCC theology. It's going to be interesting to see how his and your mindset adjust to the Christian (1st century) reality. Which will arrive soon.

  slippery: God...did he create separate species of man like the Neanderthals and allow them to die out as well?

  This Neanderthal speculation assumes Evolution is true, there's no mechanism or defined process (like matter conversion to energy) confirming the Evolution paradigm. The fossil record doesn't show it, now going on over 150 years. We now know the humans automaton (programming) is driven by software DNA instructions. And, all the other animals and plants have their set of DNA software. All are custom made. Non of them morphed into the other by "natural selection." That's reality.

  Evolution is a nursery tale, a bedtime fantasy.

  Get up to speed on the latest understanding of life's origin. Come on guys!

  DS: why did God make viruses and deadly bacteria?

  We know part of the Earth ecology is decay which causes rejuvenated foods to multiply, bacteria and viruses are agents in that cycle. Loss of human perfection meant loss of immunity, susceptibity to decay (aging and death) from bacteria and viruses.

  So what you and I witness is a life cycle that’s run amuck out of control, with a wobble thumping man detrimentally. What's the fix? Remove the wobble (effects of sin) on the ecology.

  Hi Slippery,

  What's...the point of creating billions upon billions of species only to let them die out?

  Not sure, but my understanding is the Earth was created for man, animals are part of that preparation. Humans in God's image are primary, animals are secondary. I am curious to get God's understanding of animals, they are delightful.

  How the heck did Noah cram two breeding pairs of 8.7 million species aboard a creaky wooden box just 4000-odd years ago?

  I'm with you on this. The Noah thing is mystifying. I'm dying to understand how animals populated the earth via Noah’s ark. The difference between us is, I believe there is an explanation. I accept it because Jesus referenced Noah as being legitimate. I'm proud to have faith, call me crazy.

  Yes, vast amounts of new genetic information is needed to account for the emergence of cambrian phyla. So the focus is on the genetic information and human experience tells us INFORMATION source is alway an intelligence, not random chance.

  If you understood the first thing about genetics... [Evolution] does prove common descent beyond all reasonable doubt.

  Tells us about the MECHANISM that Evolution uses to deliver randomly and by chance ("natural selection") the guidance of precise genetics to differentiate animals from humans with reasoning, love, justice, introspection, etc.?

  Your common ancestry thread doesn’t explain it.

  That's very plausible with an intelligent Creator using the power of his genetic toolkit. Easily explained.
