hi guys - new poster here.
i was brought up a jw in the uk and stopped going not long after i was married.
that was 20 years ago so i'm not really up to date with the current doctrinal flip flops or the new youtube obsessed gb.. came across this site while googling the name of a local elder who's just been convicted of possesion of a pc full of unpleasant pics of kids.. so, my question.

Not that far away - I know a lot of people from Ch-Le-St, Washington areas - well, late 80s early 90s anyway.
Hi Landy! Darlington born and bred...
how far / deep was your research on the origins of the bible or religions or most importantly the concepts (heaven -gods - immortality-etc)today many millions of people believe as the truth?.
why did these concepts existed ?.
why so many people today still believe in these concepts ?.

Oh, yeah super easy to fade away. LOL Not when your entire family is in the org and they all live in the same city. Not when your wife has doubts but tries to beat them back by being more "spiritual." Not when you're a MS and the brothers don't want you to step down because that would mean more mundane work for them.
One of the few things I've learned in this life is that first and foremost you have to be true to yourself. If you can't be true to yourself then you can't be true to anyone else.
no, not because of the message of deluding yourself into seeing the hand of god working in mundane wt activities.
that is to be expected from this org.
what really bothered me was the quote in paragraph one.
been catching up on some jw reading and found a gem in the november study wt in the first article, paragraph #11:.
yet, you might look beyond the obvious and ask yourself, does my child enjoy the ministry or only the breaks?
if you discern that the ministry could be more interesting or more rewarding for your children, set goals with them.
It would be easier to train a child to love brussel sprouts

So, my question. This is spurred by a post I've just read about someone who's read the WT at the meeting. Going to the meetings, on the field service and all the associated crap that goes with it is hard work and takes a lot of time and commitment. It seems though that not a small percentage of those who post here, who by default must have serious doubts or are total unbelievers, are still active.
So why do you do it? It's hard work for no gain. Why not just call it quits and fade away?
I realise it's not always as black and white as that and some have family ties but life's to short to devote your life to something you don't believe in.
i mean this with all due respect, i would like to hear from genuine people who think jw have it wrong and then what is the truth?.
im not talking about silly little quibbles here and there.. is jehovah real?
the the bible is word?
Just go live your life out in peace and happiness pursuing freedom of mind without any religious fantasy and superstition. Sounds like a feasible plan to me. Peace out, Mr. Flipper
That. Or in in the paraphrased words of Jesus 'Be nice to each other'
Or you could take it one step further and follow Bill & Ted's advice and be excellent to each other :)
for the last few days i was discussing with a colleague of mine at work about the stock market and how some people, even when losing money, they will hold onto their shares because someone said they will rise again.
this may lead to lost opportunities or even losing all their money instead of de-risking and offsetting loses by buying another stock, in other word jumping ship.. this got me thinking about jws (knowing that i am still in).
took one step back and looked at our family and what we have done by sticking to this religion.
The gamble even had a name - it's called Pascal's Wager and states that it makes sense to believe in God as there's everything to gain if he does exist and nothing to lose if he doesn't.
it does ignore the intellectual dishonesty of that thought process though and also the supposition of the fact that if there is a god he's switched on enough to know how you're thinking!
