  35-year-old female in california here.

  never a jw, but have had bible studies and attended several meetings and even a convention once.

  i've always been agnostic with leanings toward the belief in some deity or other, although the more i learned from the jw's, the more i've learned to doubt, not just their teachings, but the fundamental teachings of all religions.

  There IS a difference between being open-minded and being a gullible idiot. One key difference is that open-minded people don't twist other people's words around in order to build an argument against them for the sake of feeling superior. They take the other person's words at face value and offer a civilized, cohesive rebuttal, and if both parties continue to disagree on a subject, they accept the disagreement politely and refrain from name-calling (e.g. "gullible idiot") because ad hominems are at the bottom of Graham's Hierarchy of Disagreement (Google that and learn something, please). Open-minded people also do not assume they know everything. The more a person knows, the more he knows he DOESN'T know.

  I didn't call you any names. And there is s a big difference between being critically open minded and accepting any crackpot theory that comes my way as 'making sense'. But you crack on.

  Yet again you are oh so certain that you understand what I am trying to say, when in reality you continue to twist my words around to suit your desire to troll me. How many times do I have to tell you? I said THE. THEORY. MAKES. SENSE. TO. ME. At no time did I say I actually believed the Illuminati are controlling the Watchtower. Do you not understand what a theoretical conversation is?

  Ok, so why does the illuminati controlling the WBTS 'make sense' to you?

  what was the most fun ride you've ever had?.

  my personal favorite was my ducati paso 750. it may have been before a few of your times, but it was an italian rocket that totally blew away anything from japan.. .

  But the trouble with a bike is that if some douche does something stupid, you will always come off worse. Even being in a group of riders doesn't seem to help - some idiot decided to do a U-turn in front of some recently. Too many idiot car and truck drivers that ruin things.

  Not sure if this holds true worldwide as the types of roads we have in the UK are different to North America but the fatality rate for motorcycles in the UK is about 30 times greater that car drivers per billion km travelled.

  It's a myth, however that it's other road users that kill us. We kill ourselves. By the thousands.

  The urban SMIDSY (Sorry, mate I didn't see you) type collision is the most popular form of car/bike interface but they tend to happen at low speed, and as a rule, we bounce reasonably well and statisically these type of accidents don't tend to end in death or serious injury. SMIDSYs in NSL (national speed limit) are much more scary but happen very infrequently.

  Where the biggest issue with motorcycling fatalites is with rural roads, the 35-45 age range and bikes above 600cc. These accidents tend to fall in to two categories, the bend refusal and overtakes.

  Bend refusals are where the rider fails to negotiate a bend and either runs wide and collects a car coming the other way, or goes into the verge and hits some object more resilient than them. As a rider if we barrel into a bend at a speed we think is too fast (notice we think rather than actually is - in reality the bend can be very inoccuous and easily negotiated) our reaction is to freeze, our arms stiffen and our gaze locks on what we think is going to kill us. And on a bike we go where we look. If we can't take our eyes off what we think we are are going to hit it becomes a self fulflilling prophecy. This is called target fixation and it's a very difficult thing to overcome.

  The second way we kill ourselves is overtaking. Nornally the issue occurs when we overtake at a junction. As we overtake a car pulls up to the junction we're passing to turn left, looks to his right and pulls straight out into the path of the bike. Game over.

  So yes, riding a bike is more risky but even in an urban environment you can manage those risks. You can certainly manage the risks in a rural environment.

  So the upshot is if you want a bike, then get one. They're great.

  i'm probably going to say some things here that will disappoint many.

  there are some that may look back over the years and say "man i really blew it" i'm not writing the following to scold for failures, but rather to help those who are young enough to put into practice what god wills for their life, and also to those of us who are in our middle years that still have time to change some things, in order to please god and find a peace that only being in his will can bring.

  first let me say that god didn't create man for you.

  I would love a bike .... but then I also love being alive and since I'm in Calgary, Alberta, with THE worst drivers ever it simply would just be a case of "when".

  Not necessarily, there's lots of motorcyclists in canada and they're not all deaded.

  just thought id let you all in on some info i found on northeasttruth.com.

  that magical moment where the moon blocks out the sun!

  but only just enough to perfectly cover the suns disc, whilst still allowing us to see the corona of light and other electromagnetic forces radiating from it.. this only happens because the moon diameter is exactly 1/400th the size of the suns and is positioned at exactly 1/400th of the distance between earth and the sun!so, when we see it from the surface of earth, we are in the only place this can ever be seen, at the only time it could ever happen.

  I saw a car registration today. It was FT14 RTE. I couldn't believe it. Out of all the registration numbers in the UK I had to see one with those letters. It's a miracle! A bloody miracle!

  For one, I never said I believed in the Illuminati. I said the theory makes sense to me. Do you even have any idea what I am talking about? Google "Watchtower" and "Illuminati". The theories happen explain a lot about why the Watchtower operates the way it does. I just happen to find it interesting in light of the fact that my roommate is such a hardcore conspiracy theorist.

  If you think the 'illuminati' control the WTBS then you need your head read.

  Personally, I don't know what to believe. I already explained that I am agnostic, and that goes far beyond my take on religion. Just as you cannot prove that God doesn't exist, you cannot prove the Illuminati doesn't exist, either. In fact, the Illuminati HAS been proven to exist. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illuminati To what extent they exist as an organization hellbent on taking over the world, nobody knows. They could just be a harmless old boys' club, or they could be something more sinister.

  You're right, you can't prove god doesn't exist. Good job we don't have to as the status quo is that the 3000 mystical deities out there don't exist. It's up to their believers to put a coherent compelling case for their existence.

  I cba to google but istr the illuminati being an 18th century group that were disbanded in the early 19th century? What evidence, apart from the insane ramblings of David Icke, do you have that they are a secret world dominating cabal?
  
  

  I literally don't know what to believe, as I have heard sound arguments on both sides. To just blindly assume nobody is trying to control or decimate the human population is just as foolish and dangerous as it is being a hardcore conspiracy theorist. It is important to be open-minded and willing to research and discuss things, rather than assume one knows everything already. The fool speaks; the wise one listens.

  @Hadriel - ok, we've established that you don't know how abiogenesis occurred. Ignoring the fact that scientific progress is being made toward an answer I'd be interested to know your thought process?

  Tell us how you came to jump from not knowing how abiogenesis happened into taking on the possibility that an all powerful deity sparked it off?
